What games did you complete? 2022 Edition

Kirby and the Forgotten Land (2022)

A relatively short but incredibly charming platformer from everyone’s favourite pink blob. Eat your way through a variety of post-apocalyptic environments; Kirby by way of Last of Us.

Each fixed camera stage hides lots of hidden Wadledees to find and challenges to complete - spin 3 pinwheels, drink 5 coffees, and so on - each challenge completed nets you another Waddledee, with 10 to find in each stage. collect lots of them and they’ll start to rebuild their town, giving Kirby opportunities to play mini games, compete in a boss rush arena and generally feel like the good guy that he is.

There are lots of abilities, and upgrades to those abilities which can be found and crafted using items gained by beating special challenge levels, and the whole thing succeeds at making a pretty straightforward game quite varied and, if not deep, pleasingly diverting.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge (2022)

This counts, right? I clocked the story mode after 2 hours of enjoyable button-mashing yesterday afternoon. Shredder’s Revenge plays like a brilliant update to the classic Konami arcade games, shorn of the awful coin-guzzling challenge. In fact, on standard difficulty, this game is - whisper it - easy. Is that a bad thing? With so many stages to complete, Foot Soldiers to mash and recognisable bosses to clobber, I say no! This game gives you what you want, which is packs of delightfully animated enemies on screen, crunchy sound effects and an array of attacks, dodges and supers to keep the moment to moment fighting fast, fun and satisfying. A flatter, less technical brawler than, say, Streets of Rage 4, but possibly the more fun of the two.

14/06 - Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

Well goodness me there's a lot of game here isn't there. Started with my usual Lego game zeal of 'I'm definitely going to collect everything this time' but although it's a fun, low stakes, good time I need a break after I have collected just over half the kyber bricks and about two thirds of the characters and ships. Challenges range from enjoyable (obstacle courses and environmental exploration) to dull (Force stacking boxes for the hundredth time) but as these are based more in the hubs it's easy to go at your own pace with them.

I finished all the stories which were very nicely done with some typical Lego laughs (Chewie's medal fever being a stand out) and will now put it aside and mop up the rest of the many, many collectables during sessions with the nipper.

17/06 - The Quarry

Supermassives latest is also one of their most mediocre. Not a patch on the quality of Until Dawn or even House of Ashes, but I'd rate it above Man of Medan and whatever the other one was called. I'm normally okay with plot holes, but I was asking questions that never got answered as I was playing. Liked the characters and the performances though, and did have some tense moments.

17.) Sonic Origins: Economical Edition - PC - 1991/2020
A hacked together collection of all the Sonic games that will be in the official release, including Sonic CD, the fan remake Sonic 3 A.I.R., and the recompiled versions of Sonic 1 and 2 mobile ports, for the PC. Technically, that's four games but I'm cheating. Played through everything with Sonic and again as Knuckles. I love these games and I love how fans are keeping them alive. Perhaps I'll get the actual Sonic Origins at some point, but this has been an excellent (and affordable) venture. Screw you, Sega! :P

18/06 - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge

Battered through this with in one sitting with a friend on Saturday. Was a massive nostalgia hit for us and we basically spent the whole time going 'Hey, it's that guy!' and doing really poor Krang impressions.

Had a blast but I won't go back to it as it's fulfilled it's function for me.

20/06: Forza Horizon 5 (Xbone Sex)

Everything I loved was hidden behind layers and layers of bro nonsense, hours of shitty voice acting and just...noise designed to elongate the game and make me feel like I was part of something that didn't exist.

Anyway; done as much as I am going to in such a dedicated way (hall of fame, all story missions done, all showcases done, all festival bits done). Very much enjoyed it but had had enough by the end.

9. Lego Harry Potter: Years 1-4  Remastered (PS5) [Family game] - If you have followed my previous completion threads you will know about my son's love for Lego and Lego games. He is also currently Harry Potter obsessed so this was a complete win for him. I have a red line when it comes to not watching the films or playing the games until reading the books, so upon finishing the Goblet of Fire recently he was excited to finally get to play the game. As expected he loved it. Mechanics wise it's a pretty standard Lego game, however he really liked the ability to switch around spells (which are normally fixed for each character in these games), and the bonus levels inside Gringotts provided some excellent mini-game experiences that worked really well outside of the main story. All this, along with an excellent fusion of the Lego and Harry Potter brands, means it is probably the best of the Lego games we've played. -  8/10

10. Astro's Playroom (PS5) [Family game] - I ran through the platinum on this when I got the PS5 and adored it. Now with my son getting more and more confident with games, we went through my PS catalogue together to find some things he might want to play and this quickly became the front runner. What an utterly absolutely tremendous experience! The game itself is as magical as I remember, and the DualShock 5 haptics at their best, but the main thing was the reaction of pure joy I saw from my lad as he experienced those things for the first time and being able to share some gaming history with him as he unlocked artefacts saw nostalgic gaming cameos along the way. Overall he loved it, and after completing the levels he has already started going back to find collectables and do some speed runs. We are now onto Crash Bandicoot, but I think there is a case for getting him a Switch soon as I think he is primed for this type of experience. -  10/10

18. 25/06/2022 - Tomb Raider (PC)

As an Epic freebie I thought I'd give this a try and, if I liked it, I'd play the two sequels that were also given away to see Lara's journey through the end.

I will not be playing the sequels.

Good lord this is 'Busywork: The Game', isn't it? So many pointless activities just to pad the game out, so many macguffins to chase, so many awful characters to endure, not least our psychopathic mass-murderer player character. It doesn't help that I don't like puzzlers, platformers or stealth, but I knew it had weapons and I figured you could play through it as a poor third-person shooter, and I was right. In that respect it was okay I guess?

But the story was awful, whomever decided upon that constant camera shake when moving needs a punch in the kidneys and it was just far too long for what it was - and I skipped every bit of optional content. I gather that the sequels are largely the same, but more? Not that I will ever care to find out.

Wish it'd been left in a tomb/5

Because this is made for the home rather than the arcade it's a lot friendlier and if you want you can tone down the level so every level feels like the fun level one of this sort of game. (And if you want it to be nails hard you can play it in arcade mode.) It's short but I had a lot of fun despite playing it the wrong way, that is alone and playing as April O'Neil instead of one of the turtles. It just made me feel like it was 1991 all over again. A great way to spend a Sunday afternoon.

11. The Last of Us: Part 2 (PS5) - I finally finished this having suffered a near game abandoning lull, but I'm so glad I did. I've written up my thoughts in more detail in the relevant thread but I think this is probably a flawed masterpiece. The game looks incredible, the levels and environments are mostly exceptional, the character narrative/writing is top-drawer and the acting talent throughout is utterly phenomenal. A true AAA game in every way when it comes to that. Gameplay/mechanics wise I'm less fussed, I've always found Naughty Dog games a bit "meh" when it comes to feel, and I found it becoming a bit rinse and repeat in some of the action sections. Also, in my opinion, it's probably 8-10 hours too long (which in a game about 25 hours long is a problem). All these things combine to create this strange conflict in my head where on one hand it's a nailed on 10/10 and on the other a fairly run of the mill 7/10. I'm going to settle on a happy place somewhere in the middle, but if you have any desire to give this a whirl I definitely definitely would and see how you find it. -  8.5/10

26/06: Lake (Xbone Sex)

I enjoyed pottering about delivering letters but the relationships in the game are so woefully under explored and trivial that nothing else matters. Seemed like half a game, wish the Devs had had more time and money to add more depth.

23. Fez (2012) - Switch

2107596361_Fez1.thumb.jpg.741d3bf1ae83331257db2906a3b6639d.jpg

After rinsing Tunic last month, it was interesting to come back to this, a game that Tunic is so clearly influenced by. It's still brilliant, ten years after its release, and although I was able to remember most of the puzzles from the last time I played it, finding all of the cubes, anti-cubes and...other things was still hugely satisfying. The Switch port pops on the OLED screen, but it's a shame they didn't include any 'achievements', particularly when you consider that

Spoiler

one of the secrets requires you to read the achievement text to solve it.

Still, having it in portable mode made it a lot easier to rotate the console and decode the alphabet.

If you've yet to play Fez then you should absolutely check out this re-release. It's one of the best puzzle games ever made. Disasterpiece's soundtrack remains magnificent, too:

27/06 - Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth (Series X)

ll.gif.f1353d3aa8855760ffd205d9861c94d3.gif

Proper game title, that. This is basically the Symphony of the Night template with everything but the bare essentials jettisoned to get it down to a lean few hours of jumping and stabbing grim reapers in the face. The health regen and magic is too easy to exploit but it has the typically delicious Team Ladybug animation and a rapid pace that had me hammering my way through in a couple of sessions.

Hopefully Drainus turns up on consoles soon because I've loved everything I've played from them.

Music is appropriately over-dramatic:

27/06 - The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D

I've been craving to replay this for years, and while I dabbled with the Switch version with the Online Expansion Pack, it just wasn't cutting it. So a quick trip to CEX and I came home with a cheap 3DS and a copy of the game. Just sublime. Some of the best dungeon design in any Zelda (even the much maligned Water Temple has been tweaked for the better in this version) and an iconic Hyrule to explore. The definitive version of an absolute classic. The only thing missing is the classic Zelda theme, something that was rectified with Majoras Mask.

27/06: Last Day Of June (PS5)

Courtesy of the new PS+, I finally managed to play this. A pretty wonderful little title that at the 11th hour throws you a curve ball against your understanding of everything you've been doing. I completely agree with the All Gamers take on this one (SPOILERS IF YOU FOLLOW THE LINK).

Thoroughly enjoyable little time based puzzle game. Recommended.

18.) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - Switch - 2017 (2014)

Won a gold in every GP, unlocked Gold Mario. I've not quite got the full 3-stars in the 200cc yet but I'm getting there. I also haven't bought the DLC tracks yet, but all of this can wait for later in the year, or next year. I'm basically done for now.

The anti-gravity gimmick is underwhelming - it often doesn't even feel like you're upside-down, sideways or anything else. However, I loved Mario Kart 7 and this is every bit as good. The new tracks are great (I love Cloudtop Cruise) and the graphics are stunning.

What Mario Kart does particularly well is in making each increase in speed and difficulty seem so natural. At 50cc, the game is a slow race without challenge, but a nice opportunity to look at the views. At 100cc, the game feels a little faster and the other racers more aggressive. Sliding and boosting around corners is fun but the game is still very easy. At 150cc, it's the perfect balance of speed, handling and track design. Every turn seems perfectly built to squeeze in your drifts, boosts and jumps. When going up to the new 200cc mode, then, it first seems like the speed has displaced that perfect balance, the game has broken itself and become a slippery disaster at every bend. Only when learning how to ‘drift-brake’, and avoid over-boosting, does the game begin to feel normal yet again and a brand new layer of skill reveals itself. It’s a remarkably good piece of design.

The blue shells can fuck off though, obviously.

29/06 - Cadillacs & Dinosaurs (Arcade)

I play this fairly regularly and it struck me during this playthrough that many of the generic goons are just workers sitting around on their break having a smoke or enjoying a campfire, and then you burst in with a bazooka and gib them at point blank range completely unprovoked. Seems unsportsmanlike to me, but I remain unfamiliar with the source material that might explain why they deserved such a fate.

Obligatory big crunchy drum sample synth-rock bosh-bosh:

35. Drainus (Normal 2-all 1CC)

Team Ladybug are quickly becoming one of my favourite developers, first being responsible for the amazing metroidvanias Touhou Luna Nights and Record of Lodoss War: Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth, and now this also bafflingly-named horizontal shmup, "Drainus". It's named that way because the ship can drain the energy from the enemy laser bullets and-

Yeah I know it sounds like a portmanteau of Drain and Anus

So Drainus is a horizontal shmup with that takes a huge mish-mash of influences, from things like Gradius with its power-up system, Fantasy Zone with its shop (and also that one of the bosses is pretty much wholesale lifted from stage 1) and various Euro Shmups from the fact that you can take multiple hits without exploding. Only, it doesn't feel clunky and awful, it feels skill-testing and fast-paced and like if you were good enough you could still completely do it without taking a hit. The two big unique mechanics are the power-ups, which you can reshuffle at any time, but whenever you take a hit your highest-numbered powerup falls off; and also the drain mechanic, which lets you traverse any non-physical bullet (which is most of them) withou taking damage, and also convert that energy into a homing laser blast for good measure.

It's fun, has a good soundtrack, is absolutely gorgeous and probably my only real complaints are that it takes a bit long for your 2-all completion, and also that I breezed through it on my first try with only one part where I got stuck (and that was because I'd simultaneously lost all my weapons, and also didn't realise that one of the power-ups I'd unlocked very early on let me set a different default weapon which would have made everything much easier if I knew what it did all along).

Really, really refreshing entry into the genre, and completing the game unlocks an arcade mode which has a dedicated single-run mode which I will be spending some time on too.

29/06: Little Nightmares (PS5)

A few years ago someone I worked with told me about this and warned me how dark it was. I've wanted to play it since then. It being on PS+ Extra was a win.

And wow. What a disgustingly brilliant little game. The Guest Suite in particular was just awful.

Loved it.

Fever dream bullet hell flying cat laser death simulator. You are the cat; the death happens to everything else.

I have a big problem with this game that will probably prevent me from bothering to go back to it - I have to play it with the analogue stick. It seems to have some kind of bug where, when using the d-pad, sometimes your direction will "stick" and your cat will just continue to bugger off in the direction you've just let go of; so I've had to play this with the analogue stick like some kind of deviant.

Anyway Easy Mode isn't very easy, though most of it is learnable until you get to the final boss which is a nightmare. Cat movement speed is very high which makes precise dodging very difficult, but the scoring is pretty cool - collect cats to fill your bomb meter, use the bomb to generate gems which count as two cats as far as score is concerned, but zero cats as far as filling your bomb is concerned, and then keep going. Bombing makes you invunlerable for the duration of the bomb so having an exit plan from a situation is vital (the exit plan can be "collect enough cats to bomb again").

The third stage is in a vet, but the vet isn't there, so there's no stage boss?????

Real shame about the control issues, despite looking like a weird joke this is super good.

01/07: Deliver Us The Moon (PS5)

"Everybody's Gone To The Moon" except not quite as good. This was decent, but I was not a fan of the weird platforming sections, or the 2 or 3 sections that introduced some kind of peril.

Still, enjoyed the few hours I was in it. Fun.

02/07 Zero Wing (Megadrive/Switch) Booted this up out of curiosity, completed because I noticed it was a Toaplan shooter. Yes, it's the game of the meme but it's a decent enough shooter and tricky even on easy mode with rewind scumming. Was also amusing when my partner woke up from her nap next to me to see her reaction "What on earth are you playing?"

Well this was a tough one to get through. It was about 50/50 whether it ended up in the abandoned games thread or this one, but the fact it was on a portable system got me to the end as I had nothing else to do in various hotels and waiting rooms.

I don’t usually want to drop a game half way through and I did enjoy the first few cases, when it was about making logical connections between evidence descriptions and testimony presented. It didn’t stay like that though. At it’s worst point you had something like 20+ pieces of evidence collected, and 4 or 5 different people to talk to, and the only way to proceed was to show one specific piece of evidence that had nothing to do with anything to one particular person. Show the wrong thing to the wrong (or even the right) person and you get the same unskippable canned response that you have to mash through, and just try that with each item one after the other. It ceased to be a game at that point for me.

(for anyone that’s played it my breaking point was the old guy in the boat house that rambles on about pasta, and you have to show him your attorney badge which is nothing to do with the case and is always in your inventory).

When I cleared the 4th case and saw the end credits I was really glad it was over, and then when it revealed there was a bonus 5th case I was actually disappointed, lol

That fifth case had a lot of the same BS in it too. There were also points where I clearly had the right evidence and was presenting it at the time that proved a contradiction, but got penalized because that’s not the way it’s intended to be done. I won’t say it didn’t have it’s moments, but it’s also safe to say I am not going to become a fan of this series.
