Your most disappointing game of 2021

I so so so wanted it to be good. Megan is a lovely person and the passion for what she was making was contagious. However I think the hype blew up around her and she was never able to fulfill that hype and promise. I enjoyed its whimsy early on, but the more I played the more I regretted it. I almost wish I had played for the first 30 mins and never touched it again.

Deathsmiles I and II

Deathsmiles I came out perfectly, but they fucking botched II so badly. IIX mode has no slowdown and all modes have a saturated palette. It's not the prettiest game at the best of times but the shitty palette makes it properly ugly.

Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite. Ironic how 2 of the biggest Xbox games this year were both disappointments.

Loved FH3 and was looking forward to an exotic setting again but it just feels incredibly copy and paste.

The return of the Eliminator was a massive no no from me and man, even now, months after launch it's a buggy mess with challenges not registering, disconnects, matchmaking errors and all sorts.

Halo wise the campaign is woeful and while I religiously play the MP every day the greed of the in game cash shop and the sheer volume of MP issues that are still persistent like Dsync and the awful collision are really souring the experience. Also only like 5 maps in ranked and only 1 of them actually feels good to play. If someone asked me whether I'd rather keep playing the MP on this or H5, I'd choose H5 every time.

If 343 don't hit the ground running after the holidays, I'm not optimistic I'll stick with it tbh.

As Skatebird has already been said: Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis.

Plays and looks alright, but any time spent beyond a weekend to go through what the game has to offer is a waste. The endgame is, quite literally, running from point-to-point in one of two areas in the game, and killing enough enemies to get a special boss that might drop a weapon that has roughly 2% extra damage in exchange for hours of playtime.

Considering the nine year's worth of missions and genuinely great game modes in the original game that was sidelined (and fast-tracked for Global), it was a complete misstep to release it as-is and expect players to stick around as they hashed out the other content in the same drip-fed manner as the original game while halting any incentive to play the original game that's built into it - not when other F2P games exist that are dropping more and better expansions to their games in shorter timeframes.

It'll get better with as the production team figure out what to put in the massive expanse that they've built, but I can't see myself going back to the game until about another year or two.

12 Minutes. Looked forward to it for literally years and ended up bailing on it after about 45 minutes. Simply no fun to play whatsoever.

This. Not only wasn't it fun but it also felt gross and exploitative to the point of being offensive. I regretted the hour I spent with it.

Tough one, because I didn't have high expectations for a lot of them.

  • BF2042 - I expected a stock, unambitious Battlefield playing the hits, I got a weird mix of experiments that don't quite work (128 players) and copying the competition (specialists) that was all far more broken and early access than that. Didn't even last the free period.
  • Halo Infinite - I expected based on the bad original unveiling a barebones, static and unambitious open-world lacking in set-pieces or large scale battles, and that was accurate. I didn't expect the singleplayer levels to be so repetitive though, or the story so shit, or the multiplayer so unfinished and everything so rough and early access after an extra year.

Deathloop

Boring, annoying repetition. Awful, twitchy gun control on any setting. Mostly dull powers. Not nearly as clever as it thinks it is. Meh.

Hades

Speaking of annoying repetition. Just hated this, irritating writing, just not fun for me, though (bar my GOTY Returnal) I tend to dislike roguelikes/lites. Still, I gave it a chance but made minimal progression. Not for me.

Battlefield 2042

"Don't be sad. This is just how it works out sometimes"

I've posted at length my issues with it in the dedicated thread but it fundamentally just isn't fun. Feels like a Battlefield game designed by people who don't really understand what has made the series so peerless in the past and has the stench of greedy EA execs chasing the latest monetisation trends all over it. A sad example of what happens when all the core talent deserts a previously first-rate studio and a clueless publisher tries to shoehorn in systems and mechanics from other more successful games in a misguided and vain attempt to attract some of their playerbase. I'm not remotely surprised that within a few short months the player counts have fallen off a cliff.

Unlike previous games in the series that launched in a parlous and sloppy state, no amount of patching this one is going to fix what is a fundamentally poorly designed game. The aimless morass of 128 players on such bafflingly wide-open maps with a specialists system that rips away one of the core pillars of the series in order to ape the latest hero-shooter du jour makes for a game that just doesn't flow together like the series' previous best at all. A crushing disappointment for a series that I have little faith will rediscover its mojo if EA's many past studio-destroying sins are anything to go by.

Boss fights in Dread were ace and the second best of the year after the ones in Returnal (I'm not counting Elden Ring's technical test).

For me it's Deathloop. A massive step back from the fantastic Prey. It's not enough of an immersive sim to compete with Arkane's earlier work and as an action game it's kneecapped by braindead AI, no enemy variety and poor gunplay.

I suppose it’s Super Monkey Ball Banana Mania, even though I play it pretty much every day and love the shit out of it in spite of it all 🤷🏻‍♂️

There's a curious lack of people listing the crap nostalgia cash-ins in general in here, even though they all apply (I can't list them of course, I didn't buy them).

No GTA: Taking the Piss collection? That atrocious Crazy Taxi ripoff? Fucking Balan? Come on, I know a bunch of you guys made excited threads for all of these within five seconds of their announcements. Own your shit.

Battlefield at its core is a mess. Portal is decent and I get some fun though.

Returnal I just hated and not for me.

I'm currently play GOTG and people here seem to love it. After a few hours it's the single most irritating game I have ever played. Hoping it gets better and the stupid and insipid bickering just calms down for even a 20 second break.

Might be that people didn't end up buying them.

Most of the output I’ve played this year has been genuinely stellar, but…Road 96 was the one I seriously took objection to. So much so that I typed this in the game thread:

Quote

I've stopped after 10 minutes because the initial cut-scene was abysmal and the voice acting is in fact some of the very worst and inappropriate I've heard in a modern game. Honestly, if you can't hire people who are at least somewhat competent, then just give me text.

Edit: A bit to this. As soon as you switch on, it immediately felt like I was playing a game made by Apple. The smarmy, self-congratulatory Apple you sometimes get when you watch a Keynote, or step into one of their stores to be greeted by an overly-enthusiastic assistant.

I'm sure there's a good game in it - certainly, the idea of it seems to be great, and it had been on my wishlist for ages, but whilst there are some games that I'm happy for them to take their time to get going, I found myself immediately pissed off with it - which is incredibly rare for a game to have that effect on me. Really, really strange.

I found the game insulting.

And I hate it with a rare passion.

The definition of an underplanned borefest. Give me a corridor shooter any day.

Nothing to do with the single player. I just hadn't realised they'd delayed co-op until I'd already had it downloaded and was hours away from tucking in with my three regular gaming buddies.

That's "Santa didn't visit" levels of disappointment right there.

Came here to say this. my brother in law and I planned out a whole evening for last night, ordered pizza, cold bottles of pop, got his kids to bed early ... No splitscreen coop. What the fuck???? We eventually just played by passing the pad when one of us died like in the old days, but fuck me. What a disappointment.

And that's ignoring the fact that Master Chief controls like a very fat heap of lead who slowly jogs around the battlefield, and the fact that it's now an Ubisoft open-world slog of map icons, outposts, and filler gameplay. Very sad.

Second biggest disappointment is FFVIIR. I played the original to death and was stoked to see Cloud's skinny arms in high-definition. Hated everything about it, from the artstyle to Barret's voice to the combat. It was just naff and I uninstalled.

Both Hades and Returnal.

Loved both. Run after run after run, I could not get enough. And out of the blue the love was gone, now I can not muster the energy to install either game. Just thinking about playing them makes me frown. I do not know where the love went, and my disappointment definitely stems from somewhere within me.

It's not the games, it's me. I am very disappointed in myself feeling disappointed by either game.

Does Nintendo's online service count?

The awful launch now combined with the fact they're just giving us 1 N64 game a month? Get ta fuck.

Im not sure I’d call it “disappointing” from my perspective, as it was pretty much as shit as expected therefore didn’t disappoint 😂

That GTA collection is disappointing! How the fuck that happened I do not know! Well I do, they got a crap dev to handle crap cheap ports of one of the most celebrated series in all of gaming.
