I'm guessing he did heavily curate it.... wasn't it originally designed as a game he and his girlfriend would play. NYT clearly not showing the game or its fanbase the same love.

Nope.

 

"The vast majority of those disallowed words are gendered or racial slurs ("WENCH" is one of the only ones we're comfortable reprinting) or relate to potentially offensive topics ("SLAVE," "LYNCH"). Others are just foreign spellings (like "FIBRE") or outdated words (like "AGORA")."

BINGO (I'm pretty sure it was the only option left after removing all those consonants)

 

As an aside I think having an S in your first word is very important. If it does turn out to be the first letter, you know to bang out the consonants that can only follow an S. So here I got rid of C, P, H and K in 2 turns eliminating what could have been a SKILL, SHILL, SPILL... scenario (or a SCORE, SHORE, SPORE... one if that 3rd letter had been an O.

Recent talk about how the NYT have definitely changed it and are definitely fiendishly making it difficult just reminds me how people really don't like actual randomness in their games, because it can do things like this.

 

If Wordle was written by a larger team, instead of one bucket of words to choose from it'd be several buckets arranged by difficulty, and the randomiser would avoid plucking another hard to guess word out for a day or two after having done so. It's something games have done for ages to avoid entirely possible outcomes that nonetheless feel unfair. You're extremely unlikely to toss heads ten times in a row, so the game cheated when that inevitably happened and fucked with your streak.

I'm sure there's been no change. I went back and played a load of the archive puzzles from the link someone posted a while back, and I failed on several, where I still haven't lost yet playing the daily puzzle.

This one would not come to me at all; I had to resort to typing in every combination of the remaining two letters until a possible word jumped out at me.
