This is what I mentioned yesterday about hard mode. The situation where you get a very common fragment of a word can really stitch you up. It's why I use my current one (which has been rubbish at turning up used letters mostly, but is actually really helpful at whittling away the possibile answers). Previously I was using SAINT, but getting the NT ending left me in a similar bind.

Yeah. Although I think my first failed guess did rule out the most common alternative that most people hit on, so my run could have been worse.

So does this mean the best opening pair would be something like ORATE LINCS (if Lincs is even an allowed word)? I'd be tempted to substitute the C for the only slightly less common U to get all the vowels covered, and go for ORATE LINUS (again, if Linus is allowed). I might give it a go tomorrow.

They are the most commonly occurring letters, but I think you need to maximise correct positioning as well as occurrance.

The problem with using all really common letters in the likeliest position as a starter is that an E at the end or an A in the middle tells you almost nothing about what else is in there. You've gained a letter but the possibilities are still enormous. That's why I'm (currently) starting with Y at the end. If it's there but in the wrong spot, there's a good chance it's in the middle for ROYAL, LOYAL, MAYOR etc. If it's in the right spot, you've really narrowed down the words available, and can start to expect a repeated letter at 3 and 4, and you'd probably want to try an L for those words that end LY. If it's not there at all again you've eliminated a lot of possibilities.

 

Likewise I've got other common letters, but not in ideal places. If they hit that's good, because it eliminates a lot of the most common words early, if they're there but in the wrong place, I probably have a good chance of getting it right on my 2nd guess.

 

Basically, I'd take a T in the wrong place on my first guess over an E nailed on in fifth position - I think it gives me more information. Just my feeling, and I could well be wrong, but my stats aren't too bad at the end of the day (despite a couple of poor ones recently). (TBH I'd rather try the E at the start I think - if it hits you're laughing, if not you can try it at the end second time, and it's a really easy one to make other words with using the mish-mash of letters you probably want to be trying).

Alternatively... choose a different starting word every time and enjoy the challenge, instead of trying to game the system.

I'm not trying to game the system. I love words and wordplay. I do cryptic crosswords every day. I love trying to work out how things like this work. This is where the fun is for me right now.

 

The thing that gets me is that if it was any other game nobody - NOBODY - would be telling other folk not to try to be the best they think they can be at it. I don't know why this one is different, but several people have said the same thing - stop trying to be better, essentially.

 

And as I said, it's only folk trying to be the best they THINK they can be. Blind luck will get you a hell of a long way with this one.

Do whatever you like. I just find that trying to get an optimal opening word to give you the best possible position for your next guess sucks some of the fun out of it for me. I'd find it very boring to start off with the same word every day.

Fair enough, and I commented earlier that I don't follow the approach that chart details. I'm still happier working on intuition, and a lifetime of loving playing with words. It's just extra information that I'm happy is there. I'm choosing to cherry-pick a few nuggets from it to maybe adapt my approach later when I pick a new start word.

 

I don't want any bad feeling at all. It just feels odd that on a gaming forum people are coming in to suggest how people should play. It would be like me going in to a thread on beat-em-ups and suggesting folk should just try button-mashing (except it wouldn't because button-meshing in Wordle has a good chance of beating anything I've come up with on any given day. But I'm OK with that too).

 

There's an idea where you can divide gamers into 4 types based on the suits in a deck of cards. Hearts like the social side. Clubs like beating other people up. I'm almost always a diamond - I just want to collect the shiny stuff usually. This is one of the few games where I'm a spade. I want to dig down and see if I can uncover its secrets.

 

But as long as folk are having fun it doesn't matter which suit they are.
