I don't think so, because even the best word - whatever it happens to be - is going to suck for a huge percentage of the possible answers, like today where I got nothing. Unless you get very lucky, it's just a foot in the door so to speak. After that you still have to deal with the info you get, and that will usually be different. Having a good first word potentially gives you more to work with on the later guesses, is all. And I'm having fun trying to find out what the best word might be too. If I get bored I'll either change, or stop playing, but I'm enjoying it each day so far...

Ha, it was me floundering around looking for words which would allow me to put letters in the order I wanted in order to check things. I hit enter a few times on guesses that weren’t actually words. 😆

I took a gamble with Furry thinking maybe it had two Rs, and with Curry already ruled out ... still, I got it on the next go.

 

I need to think of a good second word to use if PATIO draws a complete blank.

From the few posted so far I think the QU might help and we’ll see lower number of guesses. 
 

Would be interesting to see the total distribution for all the puzzles so far actually. What makes a puzzle easier/harder to get on average?

Went with a slightly different starter for a change. This one really stumped me after I guessed UNDER, because I knew the solution had E, U and R but in weird positions. I couldn't find anything that worked with the U. It took me ages to find SERUM as a potential, but I had completely forgotten about the 'QU' possibility. It finally clicked when I was working out letter combos with the vowels I had. Evil!

The master of insanely good sci-fi Qntm has done his own rather unique take on Wordle

Absurdle is an adversarial variant of the charming and (currently) viral word guessing game Wordle.

The mechanics of Absurdle are identical to Wordle, or as close as I can make them. Among other things, they use the same word lists. (There are actually two word lists in Wordle: one is a list of 2,315 words which can appear as answers, and the other is a list of 10,657 rather more obscure words which are allowed as guesses but will never appear as answers.) The major difference is behind the scenes.

Wordle picks a single secret word at the beginning of the game, and then you have to guess it. Absurdle gives the impression of picking a single secret word, but instead what it actually does is consider the entire list of all possible secret words which conform to your guesses so far. Each time you guess, Absurdle prunes its internal list as little as possible, attempting to intentionally prolong the game as much as possible.

This is quite fun, but it feels like you can 'cheat' it by just guessing as many different letters as possible to eliminate them quickly and force the algorithm into a corner. I guess that's the point, but with unlimited guesses you don't get the tension that you do from the normal game. Maybe it would be better with ten guesses, instead of six?

just half an hour of gargling combinations of letters before it fell into place. Fell into the same trap as Alan Stock - E, U and R just didn't make sense in the positions available until I slapped a Y on the end.
