After my second guess, BROKE, I was stumped for a bit because I couldn't think of words that ended in E, but had O and R in a different config than 'xROxxE'. I had to to lay down the letters I knew and put X's in the blanks just to help me visualise the potential words, thats how I got to Forge in the end. I can't think of any other words than the 'xORGE' ones that could have actually been valid words for my guess 3, so maybe BROKE as my second guess was actually quite serendipitous!

Hoser? Ropey? Rowie? Ropey I thought was slang, and where the heck did the other ones come from in your brain? I had to look up Rowie, "A buttery, also known as a rowie or Aberdeen roll or just Roll, is a savoury bread roll originating from Aberdeen, Scotland." hahaa. Do you do a lot of crosswords or something, these are words that would never pop into my head!

I like this game, and seemingly am very good at it- today was my 3rd day, and all three days I've got in 3 attempts.

 

But this thread is a bit boring with just tons of posts of rows of squares!

 

Only 3 days in, but I agree that starting off with RATES is the best way to go:

 

-Let's you know of if there is a plural or present tense verb

 

-Gets two vowels established

 

-Gets r, s, and t established as very common consonants

 

-And I think the position of a and e in RATES is more useful than STARE or TEARS, but I might be wrong about that.

 

 

I've seen AEGIS suggested elsewhere as a good first try.

I moved on from STARE. Don't yet know if it's a good plan, but I think I'm homing in on my favourite starter. I've done STAIN for the last two days, but I'm gonna tweak it slightly tomorrow. Similar reasons:

 

Two vowels dealt with. I know people are going with ARISE, to get 3 vowels, but I think vowels aren't going to shape my thinking as much as consonants (or the lack of). But I've switched to an I, because I think I'd rather get an I than an E (if it's there). Less common, but I think it'll be more useful if it turns up - and it's easier to deal with an O and an E together in your second guess if you draw a blank (like today).

 

And then I changed the R for an N. I have a hunch that in five letter words N will be more common than R. There are loads of common endings with N in for starters - AIN, ANE, ANK, ING, INK, INT, INE, ONE, UND, UNG... etc.

 

With those endings in mind my tweak tomorrow will be to change STAIN, to SAINT, to get the N in fourth place. And if I get either the S or T spot on whilst the other is there, then chances are they're together, because loads of words start or end with ST.

 

FWIW - I think the concensus is that there are no plurals. No idea about present tense verbs, though. Having the S at the end does get you started on an SS ending though.
