At this point I absolutely couldn't think of anything that fit - except "larch", which I see both @JPR and @SeanR used, but I wasn't sure if it was a valid word. (And if it was valid, it was probably too obscure to be the answer.)

 

So I tried to think of words that would rule out the maximum number of remaining letters. The only one I could think of that ruled out five unused letters was, appropriately enough:

 

ZILCH

 

After that, I got it!

One of those ones where I’ll no doubt eventually kick myself, but currently completely stumped after three lines, having got letters 2 and 4 locked in and knowing another needs to be in either 3 or 5. Can’t think of anything to fit which doesn’t require a letter I’ve already ruled out though!

 

Edit: Finally just brute forced it on the basis the other letter surely must be in position 3, so entered all the remaining combos for letters 1 and 5 😂

A good example of how having more letters correct can makes the solution harder. My early guesses eliminated a couple of your options.

I also got lucky with my double letter gamble - those are rare, and I happened to pick another guess that re-used the same one.

Also perhaps illustrates that a larger vocabulary is a hindrance in some games.... that's the theory I use when my wife regularly beats me and my best mate who is an expat (not migrant) in Saudi gets regularly beaten by a local colleague also thinks there is much merit to.
