One of the best opening words would be:

ORATE, covering as it does three of the vowels and two fairly common consonants. 

 

Personally though, I prefer just randomising my choice. Often you're shit out of luck, but every once in a whole you get two or three greens and you can almost smell the two points.

 

Which is why I spoilered the above, in case people want to avoid the temptation of a technically strong opener.

I failed TIGER the other day. I got into a position where I had every letter but the G, and with my last two guesses I went for TIMER and TILER, both legitimate, but I just happened to choose the wrong consonant. Luck of the draw on that one.

I think one of the things you need to accept is that your score, especially relative to others, is always going to be luck.  I know a couple of people that are taking what they get compared to others super serious and act like they’re super smart if they “beat” people they know.  But like that example just, there are so many other things that I could have put for the second entry that fit with the info I had.  You can do things to help narrow it down, especially the more words you use, but you’ll never get really low scores without a bit of luck.

I went for the answer out of concern that it would end up being 'Crack' and I'd shit the bed further from not using the same letter twice.

I think this is where a guess that eliminated as many remaining letters as possible would remove that luck of the draw and potentially make you more efficient.

 

If you know it’s T I _ E R you’ve got three (I think) letters to choose from (G, L, and M). A 5th guess of LIMIT guarantees a successful 6th guess as there’s only one option left. Not allowed on hard mode though.
