I think it pays to get in early with a less common letter, something worth 3+ in Scrabble. If I'd not had that C, I could easily have failed this.

The problem with these sort of words is you’re effectively punished for getting most of the letters straight away, as someone who’s way further off to start with usually eliminates a few of the options with their early guesses.

This is partly why my starter is SYNTH. The N, T and H are all commonly part of the problem in cases like these, so that's 3 options down from the outset.

SEARS - yeah I know the repeated S was unlikely because of how the answer list avoids plurals (and presumably also plural verbs like this?). But I wanted to try a word that shifted the yellow letters EAR back one position, but keeping the same order.
