Wordle 202 3/6

🟩⬛⬛⬛⬛
🟩⬛🟨⬛⬛
🟩🟩🟩🟩🟩

Spoiler

I got lucky, because I decided to change from TREAD to STARE for my first guess today. (I initially though of using RATES, but then realised if it doesn't do plurals as suspected then the S is much better at the start).

STARE

SOLID

SLUMP

Edit: SOLID would be another good first guess choice, I reckon. I might give that a pop in future.

For anyone interested there is a game show on TV mid afternoon called Lingo. It uses a similar principle to this.

Problem is, it is terrible to play along with because you have to watch other people make their own formulations and it's no fun.

We should all be playing in hard mode, where you have to reuse all included letters from your previous answer. Level playing field innit.

Hmm, I personally wouldn't class that as hard mode, but I guess for some it's easier to just chuck a word in to see if anything sticks. That's wholly inefficient though, and a waste of a turn.

Not exactly. It's inefficient if you are trying to go for least number of guesses before getting it right, but it also decreases your likelihood of failure overall with more guesses, so is "easier".

Got lucky by pressing a letter by accident and thinking ooh that might work!

To extend that train of thought: there are 6 sets of 5, so out of 26 letters if you make each word with unique letters then by the 6th word you will have the last remaining letter unused and will know at least 4 of the letters you need for the final word already, which will include the 26th if that wasn't in the others.

So unless you have hard mode turned on or are playing as though you are in hard mode it's actually very easy to get the answer with 6 guesses.

Not having the M at the start immediately made me think of it as a 'mp' word. Dunno if that is logical, but it worked!

I think that's a really good strategy. I've only been playing the game 2 days and its already clear how useful the letters in your first choice are.

Spoiler

When you are trying to pair letters which don't have vowels alongside, S and R seem to be the most common ones that work. Plus you have the common vowels and T which is very common and pairs to make 'ST' words. Surely statistically a word like STARE has to be up at the top as one of the best openers.

There is an actual "hard mode" in the settings which I think is being referred to.

Yeah, I've seen that, i just wouldn't class it as hard mode personally. But I can see the logic for those who simply want to guess within the six tries as opposed to me wanting to guess with the least number of tries.

My T in Trump never went yellow in round 2, it didn't happen when I was playing either.

Fair enough :)

Re: Two tries with random words being inefficient... I'm not sure I agree on that. Getting the word in try 1 or 2 is basically just potluck, so 3+ is where actual planning/strategy could come in. I think if you spend the first two goes covering 10 different letters you are likely to be much better set for a 3rd try attempt at the actual word than getting fixated on perhaps one letter you get right and iterating. I'd argue that it is probably more efficient to get a fast solution that way (and perhaps why covering that off is called 'hard mode').

There is also every chance we are way overthinking a simple daily puzzle game.

Alan Stock has it right. By sticking with the confirmed letters, you are automatically shrinking the pool of possible words to choose from, therefore increasing your chances of getting either the correct word, or more correct letters in the correct places.

Oh, totally. But this is kinda fun to discuss, I feel. :)

Yeah, I'd definitely move a yellow letter to try to confirm a position rather than take a punt on finding another letter.

I managed to get TIGER on my second guess a few days ago after starting with TREND. If we imagine TIGER had been wrong, then the number of words using the three letters I have remaining would be much reduced. Even if both the R and the E were still in the wrong place, I'd be in a good place because the word would have to fit one of these patterns, and there just aren't many options, given the information I have.

T _ R _ E (Other than TERSE or THROE or TORTE the other options are probably too obscure to be used)

T E R _ _ (Apart from TERMS (and I think the concensus is no plurals) any other viable options here are obscure again)

T _ _ R E (No possible options)

T E _ R _  (TERRY, that's it)

I checked all of these using a crossword solving website.

I think guess 4 confirmed my suspicion that

we're not doing purals. I tried SLUMS, but in retrospect if I was going to pull about 2000 words (according to some article about the developer) then I doubt I would include 4 letter words with an S on the end. So, no more S at the end unless it's not a plural, for me.

Yup. It's why I stopped opening with TEARS as the S is unlikely to be at the end, unless it's a word like CLASS or REBUS, that we had last seek.

No proper nouns, either, from what I've seen.

That's my starting word as well and it has done alright for me so far, sadly missed the last couple of days and lost my streak though.

I work with a team of analysts and so we're all over thinking this, and a colleague was opening with RATES. However, after some back and forth on likely ruling out plurals, we also changed to the word you suggest there. Although TOAST worked well for me, one day.
