I keep going for an obscure word and then finding out it’s something much more common, although that’s just because the more obscure word comes to mind first and I then spend ages completely stuck before the “obvious” one occurs to me.

This costs me a line or two most days.

I realised after finishing that my guesses and the word are all linked...

My first two guesses are synonyms...

 

STEAL

POACH

 

... and then The Word is both where that action might take place (e.g. Bilbo burgling Smaug's -----), and also how you might jealously guard the thing you've stolen.
