Popular Post Ork1927
I think this show deserves its own thread The blurb is creator, Scott Ryan plays "Ray Shoesmith," a father, ex-husband, boyfriend and best friend: tough roles to juggle in the modern age. Even harder when you're a criminal for hire. Its a very black comedy/drama. Episodes are only around the 30 minute mark and its 3 seasons and done so no daunting commitment. It is excellent - watch it. Great performances, funny, violent, occasionally very tense and very dark. Can't fault it.
DonRumsfeld
Completely. One of the best shows I've watched over the past few years. Glad it's getting a chance to have a wider audience.
KartoffelKopf
Yep, everyone should get on this, it's great. Incidentally, Shoesmith isn't a new character. It's based on the character from The Magician which Scott Ryan wrote, starred in and directed in 2005. It's a kind of fake documentary that follows Shoesmith as he goes about his day to day criminal activities. I've not seen it but looks worth a watch and seems to lean more on the black comedy elements. It got good reviews. It's on Amazon Video but you'll need to stump up the princely sum of £3.49 to rent it.
Popular Post sammy
Thanks for making a separate thread @Ork1927I’ve gone full fanboy on this show, love that the word is spreading about how fantastic it is. Scott Ryan has been on a hell of a journey with the show. He made an original short for $3000 while at film school based on the Ray Shoesmith character. Nash Edgerton (stuntman and brother of Joel!) saw it, loved it and helped Ryan get some funding to polish and develop it into a longer piece called The Magician (as @KartoffelKopfmentioned!)They shopped it around to develop it into a series (HBO were interested at one point) but ultimately it didn’t work out and he had to abandon it. He got offered a lead role in a film in Hollywood opposite Natalie Portman, but the role got snatched at the last minute by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. Ryan ended up working for years as a pizza delivery driver and taxi driver, until FX picked up the script for Mr Inbetween. I love this show. It’s brilliantly written and acted, and it does more with a 25 minute episode than many shows manage in an hour. Get it watched!
Curtis
This is my favourite show of recent years. I re-watched all 3 seasons a few weeks back. I love the fact you can get through all of Season 1 in less time than a (long-ish) movie. 10/10 TV for me.

Nosejam
I heard about this on @Stigweard ‘s podcast and binged it a few weeks ago. Tense, funny, touching and brutal in equal measure an is such incredible TV that I’m already considering watching it again very soon. I’ve only ever rewatched The Wire, Spaced, Breaking Bad and The Sopranos so it’s in some pretty good company

JohnC
That one guy was bothering me with his familiarity, but I couldn’t place him. Finally realised 3 episodes from the end that he’s Dewey Crowe from Justified.
JohnC
Crikey, the ending Spoiler Given that I knew it was definitely ending, I really wasn’t sure he was coming out alive. But when that guy exited the house on fire, I knew he was winning that battle. But then the actual ending. Tense. Thought the guys were hired to kill him. But by the end it seems they’re a couple of dumbasses who may have picked the wrong random target to fuck with. I guess there’s still ambiguity, but that’s how I read it

I guess there’s still ambiguity, but that’s how I read it Spoiler That was a tense few minutes. I thought there was some ambiguity around whether they were dickhead chancers or hitmen, but either way when Ray cracked that smile I felt pretty confident their plans were about to go significantly awry. Fantastic way to end the show.
ZOK
We ended up rinsing this on Boxing Day and today as we’re isolating, three fantastic series and it’s gutting there’s no more. It’s so funny! For a show that relies so heavily on coincidences it’s a mark of quality that it rarely seems unrealistic…think the only thing that was blatantly silly was the Christmas episode where Spoiler the girlfriend’s brother took the unicorn candle, and refused to give it to Ray’s daughter, so he threw him through the window. All of that was stupid. But only dropping one five minute clanger during three whole series is pretty good!
cassidy
How good is this. Done S1 and 2 of S2 so far and fully invested. It's funny and dark and brilliant.

Thor
Does this improve after the first episode? It struggled to hold my attention, and one of the characters I could barely understand. That first episode was a bit rubbish.
Melon_Bread
The one you couldn’t understand has motor neurone disease. Maybe watch a few more and find out.

Fierce Poodle
Not sure why people feel the need to steam in after one 20-minute episode with their hot take, asking if it gets better, when it’s clear everyone in this thread has watched most/all of it and really enjoyed it.

ZOK
Also, anyone who is jonesing for more great Aussie stuff after this is finished, don’t forget all the Kath & Kim series are on Netflix, it covers similar ground but with more weight on the humour.
Thor
Hot take? Since when is asking if a series improves after a pilot episode considered a hot take? And put your pitch forks away, I didn't know the guy had motor neurone disease. Jesus Christ.

And a cursory glance at this thread would have told you a lot of people are really enjoying it. And I can only assume you were on the eggnog when you watched it if you didn’t realise his brother had some sort of disability.

neoELITE
Add me to the very impressed list. The lead character is excellent and the cast are also really great. It reminds me a bit of the Amazon Prime series Wayne where the central character does unspeakable nasty things to other people who half deserve it so it makes you root for them. I watched 4 episodes yesterday and thoroughly enjoyed it - I'll finish season 1 and 2 in the next few weeks.
