I thought this too, but that’s a different actor! Ke Huy Quan has done surprisingly few films, considering how fantastic he was in this. Emotional heart of the movie indeed - the chemistry between him and Michele Yeoh is what really makes the movie sing. 
 

I’ve never seen a movie like this before, and I don’t think I’ll see one like it again. It has to be seen to be believed. It’s legit one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, but the core of the story is so sweet and tender and kind it almost makes you cry. 
 

It’s sci-fi, it’s kung fu, it’s a Wong Kar Wai kitchen sink drama. What other movie even thinks about doing all of that?! Much less make it work?

 

Huge respect to James Hong. 93 and practically in every scene of the movie. That’s just incredible.

I have to admit there was a section near the beginning where I was finding things very grating and annoying and I was worried I'd end up agreeing with Peter Bradshaw. Some of the stuff in the IRS building just as it's kicking off. It thoroughly won me over after that though.

I hadn’t been to the cinema in 2 and a half years but just went to see this with my wife for her birthday. What a return to the cinema! So, so good. Every part of its make up was executed so well that it leaves you grinning like a loon, at first the sheer audacity of the plot, and secondly the wonderful execution. I kept waiting for something to let down the expectations it was setting up but it just stayed fantastic all the way through.

Not gonna lie, that was how I watched it, and I thought it was fantastic. Reminded me, tonally, of Kung Fu Hustle in a lot of ways.

Also, not having a pop, because individual circumstances whatever, but I remember the comments on the Matrix thread (“my pirated copy looked shit”) and also, a 5 screen Picturehouse opened 3 minutes from my house and if I think about it too much then I get anxiety as there’s no fucking way it’s sustainable seeing as it’s empty all the time.

I watched Swiss Army Man recently which is by many of the same people and has the same mix of absurdism, purile humour and very real, human story so I was expecting great things from this movie.

 

It really didn't disappoint. I am really looking forward to watching it again pretty soon.

I enjoyed the fact that the film's big threat was essentially a visualised version of the old joke about a zen Buddhist ordering food and requesting "make me one with everything."

 

 

Its action scenes more than made up for Michelle Yeoh not getting a proper fight scene in Shang-Chi.

I was a bit unsure about the different factions' aims towards the end, after the Alpha-verse "Operators" (to use Matrix terminology!) got wiped out. The Alpha-verse James Hong and his verse-jumpers were aiming to kill Evelyn because she  could become a multiversal threat like her daughter, right? But when they ended up in the IRS building staircase, they seemed to get along pretty well with the Jobu Tupaki cultists - they were more focused on blocking Evelyn than on trying to stop Jobu/Joy walking into the bagel! (What a sentence.) 

 

 

 

Is the end of the film (Part 3: All At Once) set in the universe where they've had the Chinese New Year party? Or is it in a somehow restored version of the universe we've followed for most of the film (in which Evelyn punched Dierdre, stabbed Waymond, the IRS office got wrecked, etc)?

On a gut level, it feels to me like the film ought to conclude in the latter universe, because that's been our primary focus throughout the film. But that raises awkward questions about all the stuff that would be involved in cleaning up that mess, but which the film never suggests (e.g. wiping Dierdre's memory, for one)!

Just to echo others in here, saw this tonight and thought it was utterly amazing. It's bat shit mental but is also hilarious and somehow entirely coherent and consistent with a real emotional core. 

 

Best thing I have seen in a long time.

Yeah, finally got to see this myself at the weekend. Just wonderful in every way. It balanced the emotional and funny beats brilliantly. Rare that a movie can handle those tonal shifts this effortlessly. The core had me in tears throughout as well. Best cinema experience I have had in years (helped even more by the fact that I saw it in an Alamo Drafthouse with three fresh out of of the oven cookies and a pint of stout!)

I thought this was good, though I wouldn't say I loved it and I don't think it's something I'd watch again because I felt there were a few points it dragged a little. It does handle a multiverse in a far more interesting way than anything Marvel can chuck at the screen though, that's for sure.

 

It also had some funny, poignant and sad moments though, with Yeoh giving a brilliant performance in particular. There's much to admire about it and it definitely has left an impression on me, albeit a bit of a sad one -

given stuff going on in my life the central theme hit hard, to the point that on the drive home I've was reflecting that I feel a bit like Joy at the moment, except without anybody around to pull me back from the bagel.

 

One thing I did love was that the film had real heart and not in a forced, saccharine way - it felt genuine, and that's thanks to the performances of all concerned.

 

I'm glad I saw it though and it goes without saying that knowing nothing about it going in (like I did) is the best way to experience it.
