I end up using the pistol a lot, once I'm in and around buildings. I'd love to watch someone else playing, do I could see how they actually snipe their way through levels, but I've tried and it gives me motion sickness. 

I don't think you're doing it wrong. Most of my kills in the campaign were either by a stealthly knife to the throat or by machine gun as I was running away after being spotted. Running at an enemy as they spot you and knifing them before they can fire a shot works well  

 

The AI is also so dumb that if you can see the enemies from far off, you can spend time sniping away at them until they are all dead before you even get  to the area

I make the most out of the AI being a bit stupid but I do also use the quiet bullets (whatever they're called) if there's no sound masking.

 

I do also shoot from very far away and/ or run away to hide ( and preferably run off to somewhere with a sound mask so I can kill even more of them when they come and look at the initial corpse. 

 

You can also game the start of most levels in a big cheating way because the AI don't go all the way to the starting area so you can quite often run back to there.

Currently having fun on Spy Academy seeing how many Nazis I can hit from the starting area. I think I'm going to run out of ammo before I run out of people to shoot.

 

Shooting explosives is a great way of activating the AI and getting them to come out into the open to get shot in head*

 

The AI can get a bit annoying when it gets stuck in the "oh my God! Someone shot Ralph! Never mind, back to patroling. Oh my God! Someone shot Ralph! Never mind, back to patrolling* loop. It could do with telling you when just nearby enemies are searching for you, rather than someone the other side of the map. 

 

Still loving this, but I'm going to have to start letting people invade my game, just for the unlockables. I want to see how @Hawklord has set himself up to kill invaders easily.

 

* I'm going for the "150 headshots over 100 metres" medals, so everyone is getting brained.

Discovered a little bit of what would in modern parlance be referred to as a "hack". If you're playing the Xbox version, you can use a mouse and a pad at the same time. I use the pad the bulk of the time to get about then, once I'm in a decent position for sniping, the mouse is much, much more accurate than the pad. And it's easier to track moving targets.
