Sniper Elite 5

Finished the first level and pretty much agree with the sentiments of the thread. There’s fun to be had but feels like a remaster from 2’s era rather than a sequel to 4.

The AI is comically shit on medium. Ran into a bunker, got spotted so kept running to hide and wound up in a small room. Expected guards to follow/check but they just ambled past, even after a couple of bodies piled up in the doorway. Another time I melee-killed an enemy not realising I was in view of another soldier; he just sprinted at me and ran straight past. Maybe he needed the loo.

Found the opening level to be too flat and sprawling. Sound masking doesn’t feel as effective either. Or is bugged and goes silent for long stretches. Will bump the difficulty up a notch to see if that improves things in terms of the enemies not being such clowns. A shame, feels like a big step backwards.

Surely he got paid by the publisher?! His other tweet in that thread: "It's like Hitman and MGS V and Splinter Cell and Deathloop all mixed together and it just rules."

I mean... ?!?!?!?!?!

What actually turned me off is the non-lethal options. I've a weird compulsion to do everything non-lethal whenever I get the opportunity, thus massively hindering my opportunities to just kill everyone in sight as in previous games.

Not really helped by the weird 'conscripted by force, planning on going AWOL at first opportunity' bios on some of the enemies.

Found out I actually have Sniper Elite 4 on my PS5, presumably thanks to PS Plus at some point - so I can give that a shot before forking out for this, thanks for the advice.

I love that. It's the equivalent of finding a 50 quid note down the back of the sofa.

After finishing the game, I bought the extra DLC level where you have to kill Hitler.  I thought it was a one off, but twice now I've gotten stuck in the same bushes near the first AA gun you blow up.  It was very annoying the second time as not expecting it to happen again I didn't have an early enough save to go back to once I'd found myself stuck again.

Played through Spy Academy, easily the best level so far, and… then the option to exfiltrate completely disappeared.

Quitting and reloading doesn’t fix it so I guess it’s an uninstall until the game gets the half-dozen or so patches it needs.

It looks like there’s been an update today, but I’ve not tried it to see what’s changed yet.

Ah okay, I’ll let a few other games download then update and have another go at Spy Academy. It’s a mahoosive level, although one disappointment…

Spoiler

…the amazing sniper’s nest at the middle of the level is pretty much useless because by the time you get there, there’s not much left to snipe.

That exfiltration bug happened me on Spy Academy too, the option just disappeared. I just went to the speedboat at the end of the island and it let me leave though once I walked up to the boat.

Oh cool, I’ll give that a whirl. I saved at the other end of the island I think, so gives me a chance to take out any remaining soldiers and officers. And have a nose around for the two workbenches I missed.

I'm finding a lot less motivation to replay levels this time around. I think the lack of the challenges there were in 4 (like the one in 4's first mission, there was a challenge to kill all the officers with tripmines) and the fact that the collectables are all fairly easy to find has made each mission virtually one and done. Which is annoying because there's been a couple of "oh I could do some good sniping from here" after everyone was already dead or "here's a sneaky way to get to ..." moments already.

Though I've realised that the easiest difficulty is actually too easy for me. You're basically invulnerable. So I'm thinking I might start again on the next difficulty up.

Confirming this worked. Had to look up where the exfiltration point is but onto mission four.

Getting a little more into the game now. Each level has taken a while to complete though, might try playing an hour and taking a break as usually get impatient and too gung-ho if playing longer than that.

Not had time to play anything for the last couple of weeks and after a stressful week so far at work I thought I'd give the Spy Academy a go. Meh it's bugged. The side mission of using a stealth takedown to kill Richter says challenge failed if you ever re-load a save. Confirmed this by saving right at the start of the mission before I'd even moved. When I reloaded, challenge failed

Had a good blast with two of my mates last night on the horde mode. Good fun if you have more than one player and want to coop.

However, my brother, who has 3080ti practically brand spanking new PC cannot play it as it judders all over the place. It's not framerate drops, literally freezes for half a second every couple of seconds, and does the exact same whether he's on Low or Ultra settings. Anybody heard/had the issue? Pain in the arse cos he can't join us playing.

Gave this another go today. I've hit the point I did with 4 where I just kinda got bored of the "sneak, sneak, shoot. Sneak, sneak, shoot" loop. Hoping I snap out of it soon. Had fun blasting Nazis from miles away at the start of the Spy Academy level, though.

Couple of little bugs.

Burning truck, minus the truck:

Missing textures all over the place

Invaded someone’s campaign for the first time, I managed to set off an alarm when I entered a building. A few minutes passed, when I get a notification that the player had committed suicide. Easy achievement!

Also one of the hidden eagles is extremely well hidden on the Secret Weapons level. You’ll probably need a guide to find it, like I did. I think the achievement popped before I had all of them.

I didn't know there were hidden eagles this time too.  I haven't seen any and I've completed the whole game and the kill Hitler DLC!

  • 3 weeks later...

Finished off the last two levels this afternoon. I was lukewarm on it but having played through the game, will say I enjoyed it a lot more from Spy Academy onwards. It’s not great, and a step backwards from SE4, but there’s enough in it to get a solid few hours from it if you’ve enjoyed the previous games.

That being said, I do think the levels are too big. Or at least they don’t all need to be massive. I played most of them over a couple days at a time because the gameplay is pretty repetitive with the levels being so spaced out, and with little to distract or that made me stop to admire. Some tighter, denser maps mixed with the larger ones would have made the bigger levels more impressive. Would have liked a few more duals with enemy snipers too, but they’re pretty easy to outwit once you spot them as they don’t tend to move position.

Graphically it’s a step back too, with even the kill cams lacking the punch of the previous game, amid a pretty bland overall look.

On the whole it feels like a game that got rushed out as a box ticking exercise. It’s not a bad game but it is one that might end up stalling what has been an enjoyable series of games that have progressed with each iteration until now. Should this be the final entry that would be the biggest disappointment. Karl Fairburne deserves better.

Ended up going back to this and despite what the game says, I still got the stealth takedown challenge.

I then went on and finished the game. I enjoyed it but nowhere near as much as I enjoyed SE4
