Sniper Elite 5

I'm currently at the Spy Academy level and I've ended up killing everything that moves no matter how noisy it gets. I don't know how many nazis I've killed yet but it must be e few hudred by now (in total for all levels, that is).

The slo-mo kill cam never gets old, but I've yet to manage to hit a grenade that's equipped on a guard. I remember from the previous games that you could get lucky and hit a guards' grenade and take down a bunch of nazis with only one bullet but I've yet to see this happen in this. Is it no longer a feature?

Still in mission 2, and dying loads, but enjoy the basic loop of whistling ineffectually, try to creep past anyway, see a couple of white crescents filling up, panic and hit the deck, spend ages crawling around trying to avoid filling a yellow crescent, get shot while sniping back, lob some grenades, charge at Nazis while bringing my knife to a gun fight, heal up, repeat.

Love it.

In mission 2, the rifle workbench gets you access to silencers, which help a lot. You should then have a silenced pistol, rifle and secondary.

Spoiler for where it is:

Spoiler

In the farm buildings to the right of the map. If you go right from the start, there.

annoyingly, I only found this out after I'd completed the mission and was just trying to find all the collectables.

I've just had it crash during a survival match. Had to switch my Xbox off to be able to do anything. Which was annoying.

My this game is annoying me. I loved SE4 and was so looking forward to this but the bugs and non-existent AI are grinding me down. The soldiers are either terminators that can pinpoint me like a laser or walk right past me and wait to be shot.

I’ve also encountered a bug where Beckendorf on the first level has disappeared so I cannot finish everything off. Looking online it seems to be pretty common if you roll into the town he is in and it gets noisy but no amount of reloading makes him appear.

All in all a big disappointment for me.

I've also discovered that you basically can't kill people in vehicles. If you shoot them, they don't die. Or, they get out of the vehicle, then die. Blowing the vehicle up seems to work though.

Weird. I shot the driver of a vehicle the other night and he was dead at the wheel. Must be an xbox thing? Playing it on a ps5.

Yeah, the AI is certainly a big disappointment in this one. My initial joy is pretty much gone.

I'm not sure it's consistent. I've noticed odd behaviour when shooting soldiers on bikes and on the backs of trucks.

The fuck were You're A Gamer thinking with their review. This is a massive, depressing comedown after 4. Feels flaky, woolly, irritating. Sniping good, everything else poor.

A real shame. Uninstalled.

Edge [5] prediction.

I was thinking about the Edge score earlier and if it gets more than a 6 I'll be shocked. It's clearly not been finished and far too many games are like that recently. I can understand why due to Covid etc. but it's frustrating when you are looking forward to a particular game and it would actually be better if you left it a couple of months and then picked it up once the bugs have been sorted out.

I did take a break and try the Invasion mode which was fun but too many players were camping and so lost the match. Am I right that if they do get killed for camping my stats do not go up? Seems a bit harsh if they don't as it's no fault of my playing if the sneaky bastards try and cheat. Had a great example of this on the Guernsey map with my rival camping at the top of a tower. I tried to kill them by lobbing grenades onto the roof where they were hiding but no joy and no chance I was going up the ladders to them. The game decided they were camping and kicked them out.

Installed after the hype and massive Alan Patridge shrug for me. Couldn't be more by the numbers if it tried and doesn't feel that diff to SE2 (the last one I put some time into and enjoyed for what it was)

I think I'll get a 90GB refund thank you very much

I'm finding picking stuff up and opening things a bit of a pain as well, it's really finicky about pointing at what you want.

This is a big one for me. The FOMO of not searching every corpse along with the awkward and overly sensitive detection which means you have to be pixel perfect to register the pickup icon had me chewing my elbows in frustration. Just don't know how this kind of thing gets signed off for launch when it's such a frequent and necessary part of the game.

Maybe the precision and finesse of my recent MGSV playthrough killed this for me. That's a game where the controls feel so highly tuned and reliable that you never question the game. The inputs are deliberate and insanely accurate. Sniper Elite 5 feels like the pad is calibrated for a lightgun or something, it's so completely off.

Finally finished mission 2. What a non-stop clusterfuck that was. I assume when alarms are triggered the game just spawns a load of goons who aren’t normally in the map? I hope so, as I slotted about a hundred of the kuntz getting through that mansion.

Onto the Spya Lucaria Academy. Supposedly it’s a bit magic.

I find this game endlessly amusing but I'm not entirely convinced it's much of a step up from 4. For one thing, the lip-sync (at least on ps5) is absolutely comical. The first woman you meet in the first level does absolutely nothing by way of connecting her lips together to make b and p sounds.

Tbf the character models weren't up to much in 4 either but if you're doing in-engine cut scenes... yeesh.

I can almost never tire of the comical timing (I.e. the expression of the dying nazis) of the kill cam though. I almost can't imagine how anyone could play this game seriously but I'm sure people do.

Nice to know others see it too. Thought it was an Xcloud problem.

@jonamok" load of goons who aren’t normally in the map"... loool, yes, I think that's exactly what is happening :D:D

Is it me or does some areas have an infinite amount of guards until you move beyond a certain point? On various maps I've tried to lure out the couple of guards I see, only to end up killing 20+ guards. When I get to the next populated area it's the same all over again. On one of the maps I had a kill count of around 200 guards and I hadn't even explored the enitre map.

Got spotted, so went to hide in grass. Two soldiers came and crouched down next to each other by the edge of the grass around 50m away (164 feet, or 55 yards in new British standards). I sneakily got my silenced pistol out and shot the one on the left. He flinched but didn't move. The one on the right, about 1m away didn't react at all. I proceeded to shoot them both. I've also had situations where enemies just don't run away from a grenade that's landed at their feet. The AI seems worse than in #4 for some reason. I might put this bun back in the oven for a while.

So is the general concensus here that if you haven't played Sniper Elite 4 or 5, then it might be best to actually play 4 instead of the new one?

4 feels like the sequel to this. Better AI, tighter level design, more memorable missions. The level design in 4 is some of the best I've ever played in a shooter, 5's areas are too large, too many invisible walls, unpredictable AI ruins your plans after ages of traversal.

I even found the music and sound annoying in 5. Something went really wrong with this.

Extremely suspicious about that Essential review.

There's definitely points where vehicles keep arriving to disgorge soldiers. And I think this means you sometimes get points where, the longer the mission goes on, the more troops there are. The picture I posted above was by one of these points - there should have been a handful of soldiers there, there was actually thirty or so.

This sums it up quite nicely.

The AI is a bit... odd. It's improved in some ways. Like I got spotted in one corner of a map and they actually moved in different directions to surround me, rather than just running straight at me. But they also seem to get stuck in loops where they spot a body, run about trying to find me, give up and head back to where they should be, spot the body and start searching again. It sounds stupid, since it's they way humans would actually act, but they sometimes don't stop looking for you, which kinda goes against how the game is played. You can't just hide until they stop looking with done of them. I can't work out if that's deliberate, though. They also seem to ignore explosions that are more than 20 feet away.

I'm not a fan of the weapon mods either. They don't really feel like improvements, there's always a negative side. Whereas 4 had just improvements.

And yet I'm still playing it.

Man, this sounds like the fucked up one of the best games ever.

I’d have been happy if they changed nothing at all and just stuck ten new maps in.

It's still enjoyable, just a big disappointment.

4 is fantastic. Brilliant level design. Good story progression from mission to mission. It feels smoother and less buggy to me.

Sniper Elite 4 has a next-gen update . Sorry to hear 5 seems a bit off . Was going to get it but will wait till it's a bit cheaper.

Hopefully it will be patched by then. As is the norm sadly these days.
