Gave this a half hour go last night.

Seems like a decent iteration of the last one.

AI seems a bit more aggressive. They spot you a lot quicker than in 4 and seem to come and have a look when they get a glimpse of you. Which they didn't do in 4.

Level design is a bit better, from what I've seen so far. A bit more open, though I quickly ran into "why can't I get over that?" situation.

I'm liking the temporary weapon thing. Better than having to ditch something, then pick it back up again. Couldn't work out why a rifle I found had armour piercing bullets, though. Clearly there was a use for it, it was basically signposted "use this here", I just couldn't work out the use.

Going to give it a couple of hours tonight...

Completed the first mission.

It is just more of the same, really. I'm liking the graphics and the maps. Though it's a bit harder to spot enemies this time around.

The AI isn't a lot better. They still line up to get shot and immediately forget the person next to them has just died. Not sure if it was a bug or not, but I managed to kill two soldiers stood next to each other by killing the one slightly behind the other first.

It also seems a bit more game-y. Like there's more "kill this person, grab the key to open the door and unlock the next bit of the level" going on. And, as people have pointed out, there's a very definite "it works this way" in the first mission.

But it's still good, lots of sneaky sneaky shooty action going on.

All of the above. If you liked 4 you'l like this. Maps seem considerably larger, at least the first one is, and the level of mayhem you can unleash is still strong.

I'll not tire of luring three nazi's into some living quarters and tossing a stick grenade in, for shits n giggles. And only then as they didn't walk far enough in to step on the mine

Gave Invasion a go earlier. Not feeling it. I assumed you'd get dropped somewhere near the enemy sniper or have done kind of "he's over here!" pointer, but I spent the whole time wandering around the map, not knowing even vaguely where he was. And a good few ended when he got killed by the AI.

Saying that, I gunned down one player and shanked another. Think that'll do now.

Sadly I've given up on this after an evening. Problem is I've come straight from Hitman 3 which is slick and smooth in kills whilst this feels incredibly clunky and slow to play. Might come back at a later date.

Feeling the same. Coming from another complete recent playthough of MGSV, I'm struggling with the amateurishness of this. LOVED 4 and was massively looking forward to 5, but the inconsistencies and sloppiness have really bought it down and made a weak first impression on me. With 4 I loved it from the very first level and even went back and replayed the opening scenes over and over to mess with the AI and explore the level, but here the levels feel too big and the AI isn't very, um, I.

I know this isn't an AAA game but it does feel like a PS360 remaster at times and just a bit too janky.

The killcams look kind of crappy. Very much like a crash test dummy or action man awkwardly ragdolling with very silly gore effects plastered everywhere.

I'm sure there's a good game in here if you overlook its shortcomings, but it has a lot going against it.

Not sure why this got a Eurogamer Essential. It’s decent but nothing outstanding. The level design pales in comparison to Hitman, although the combat is fun.

Spy Academy is a great level.

So not as good as 4? That's disappointing :( Still looking forward to playing it though.

Spoiler

Though it's a bit harder to spot enemies this time around.

Are you on console or PC? A lot of it (like the tiny UI with options for be Very Tiny, Tiny or Small) feel like built for PC monitors where you're 30cm from it. I wonder if that's what enemy spotting is built around too

I wouldn't say that. It's just more of four. As in 'mooaaarrrr!!' Solid game, was the long grass in 4? Not sure it was. Picking soldiers from that spot on the beach was great. Only just finished the first level after a good 6 hours at it.

Xbox. I'm only half a metre or so from my 27" monitor. I think it's just that the more realistic graphics means that they done stand out quote so much. There's a lot of brown going on in the first level.

Dunno if it's not as good as 4, it just hasn't left such a positive impression on me this time around and I'm struggling to overlook its annoyances.

Something about the speed of the aiming feels off, I'm finding myself in far too many Benny Hill moments and things going to hell a lot because of it.

I'm enjoying it, but finding it 4.5 rather than 5.  I've also had a few instances where pressing fire doesn't work and I have to move position or cycle through my weapons to get it to work again.  Playing on Series X.

Well, I’m loving it. I’ve never completed either of the last two Hitman games because I find them difficult to play. This feels much more in line with my thought processes.

it also looks fantastic on my Series X. Anyone saying it looks like a 360 game needs to stop smoking the crack.

I’ve had a bug where the Kill target in level 1 didn’t spawn (even though he appears in the mini map), and also after killing the target in level 2 with the Del Boy chandelier, I got the medal for it, the award for 3 stars, but in the Service Record it’s gone back to 2 stars & hasn’t unlocked the new rifle. Bit frustrating!

Other than that it’s just great to playing some new SE content. Currently on Level 3 and it’s been a complete blast so far - the castle looks like something from a Dark Souls game!

Played this as soon as it was available on GP and enjoyed it. Come friday night and I teamed up with a friend playing co-op from the start and the entertainment factor shot through the roof. Playing this in co-op is too damn fun, what was supposed to be a two hour session ended up in 5, trading in a couple of hours of sleep for pure mayhem.

Yeah I’ve finished the first three levels and am ready to pack it in. When you’re doing some actual sniping the game is good and makes you feel like a total bad ass. However most of the time the level design doesn’t allow for this and it just turns into another tedious shooter.

Also, when the stealthy stuff does go tits up there’s none of the fun of say Far Cry 2 where going full Rambo is a real option.

Have no clue what Eurogamer sees in it. It's your business-as-usual Sniper Elite game. Not bad, in fact quite good, but nowhere near, lol, "essential".

The body of the review doesn’t quite read right for me. Let alone for an essential. Reads like an early career review (which it very much isn’t). It’s being looked at with vaguely uncritical eyes I think.

Didn't realise you can strip ammo out of enemy weapons. If you pick one up and hit X (on Xbox), it takes the ammo out and drops the weapon.

I've started to notice little glitches and bugs in places. There's clearly some sound missing. I've only played through the first level, but the big guns don't make any noise when firing and there's a record player that you can start, it says you're sound masked, but there's no music or anything.

And on the pier bit, there's a scramble net that you can climb up and you clearly should then be able to climb onto the pier, but it wouldn't let me. It kept just jumping off and dying.

I'm finding picking stuff up and opening things a bit of a pain as well, it's really finicky about pointing at what you want.

Oh and enemies are in the bad habit of noticing a grenade land next to them and just crouching and covering their ears.

Still enjoying it, though.

I’ve played 2,3, and 4 before this, and this is easily the buggiest for me. I’m on the last level and I’ve had seen a dead body floating mid-air, ladders with an invisible wall at the top, silent gramophones, enemies, icons not clearing on activated things on the map, and more.

There are some small walls you can jump over, but then others the same that you have to jump round, enemies are dumb, don’t run from grenades, etc, and I had more slow down in the cutscene after either mission six or seven.

I still love it, the series is a guilty pleasure, but I don’t think it has in anyway eclipsed SE4, and I have no idea which game Eurogamer must have played to earn such a gushing review.

Still in mission 2, and dying loads, but enjoy the basic loop of whistling ineffectually, try to creep past anyway, see a couple of white crescents filling up, panic and hit the deck, spend ages crawling around trying to avoid filling a yellow crescent, get shot while sniping back, lob some grenades, charge at Nazis while bringing my knife to a gun fight, heal up, repeat.

Love it.
