Everyone should read the Eurogamer review - it's the most glowing review I've read in a long time.

When you first meet werewolves they're absolutely terrifying. They're overwhelming. Each one is a boss fight in itself ... and yet, by the end of the game you're knocking them aside. Batting them away. Popping their heads off and splattering their bodies. This is Evil West: it's got that great Double-A treat, the ludicrous power curve. By the end of the game you're pretty much a god. And gods really give game designers a chance to be unreasonable.

Simple, predictable enemies, gradually added to throughout the campaign - this is one of those games where mini-bosses quickly become folded into the general enemy camp - and coming at you in new combinations, in new arenas, perfect for letting you try out your latest gadget. At times, it's almost Robotron.

It is, in other words, a really beautifully made video game. It knows what it is - the kind of game with launchers, the kind of game where the protagonist has lines like, "Never thought I'd be blowing up my own house!" And it delivers on its simple pleasures with beauty and variety.

Having watched both Skillup and Gman's reviews, it seems SkillUp loves it as a AA modern God of War clone, while Gman is completely unprepared for it being that. His issues with the combat seem to directly echo the worst bits of GoW, so I guess the AA modern God of War clone moniker is actually pretty apt for both. That alone should tell you everything you'd need to know.

I never trust either channel to be honest: Skillup was apparently a bit Gamergatey (though citation needed, I may be thinking of someone else. The Deathloop review seemed alright)

But whenever I saw any more recent Gman vids he seemed to come across as relentlessly sexist. Using thumbnails that were clearly designed to bait people who had a problem with objectification in games, with the tackiest, most childish looking drawings of female game characters plastered all over them. He's one of those "SJW" hating types and can get in the sea.

The only regularly updating gaming YouTuber I trust so far is Civvie 11.

Apparently it’s technically rock solid and consistent.

Depends on your definitition. Having to go down to 1080p on PS5 and XSX for 60fps is a bit rubbish considering the last-gen look of the game.

Well its by an AA developer and it runs on PS4 which was around in 2016, why were you expecting any different?

Yeah, fuck those games from 2016.  They were all naff.

Ah, I didn't realise it was a cross-gen game. That'll explain it. :)

edit: I have no plans to buy this, so I'll stop shitting up the thread. It sounds like it plays pretty well in fairness.

Been a while since a game has kept my attention most of the day. The Eurogamer review sums up my thoughts pretty well. It just knows what it wants to be and achieves it dead on. Constantly throwing new enemies, tactics, and ways to deal with them. I'm kinda fanboying over it. It's a game I can see myself replaying on harder difficulties for sure.

Anyone else having performance issues on Steam Deck? When rotating the camera there's some nasty FPS drop, even on Low settings.

Yeah, sadly performance has not been spectacular for me on Steam Deck. Playable though, I'd say.

This game needs more love. It's so fucking fun. I've moved up the difficulty but on Ng+ so I still have all the fun tools so really it doesn't feel that much more difficult. Gameplay wise, it feels like a game made by People Can Fly, but the combat is ramped right up to 11. Shit gets crazy later in the game.

Must be the poor console performance putting people off. No issues on pc though.

I’ve been playing this instead of going back to GOW ragnarok - the combat is so much fun and properly challenging without being unfair.
It constantly throws new powers that let you rip through enemies that previously caused you issues and feels satisfyingly meaty when you hit stuff.

I keep thinking about picking this up.

With a couple of weeks experience, are any early adopters recommending it?

I've had fun with it.

I was surprised at first that it focusses on melee combat but as you progress the weapons play a larger role. Enemies that start as bosses get folded back into the game as regular fodder as you get new techniques and weapons that make short work of them. There is a solid feel to the combat which is satisfyingly crunchy.

The locations shift between a base location where the story progresses and the levels which vary each time. Some of the locations look quite impressive, though the levels are linear in design it's all about the combat.

Playing it currently and it’s proper silly BBB game fun.

Looks lovely and no issues with the frame rate on a decent PC. Plot is serviceable, and the combat is excellent and just keeps throwing different ways to dismember of opposition.

Perhaps a little one note and it’s literally go here kill some things, get mcguffing and go over there and kill some more things but suffice to say killing things is fun.

Feels like a stripped back God of War (2008) with guns as well as mêle, the combat feels very chunky and visceral.
