Have there ever been any great sonic 3D games?

Sonic Adventure and Adventure 2. The second one especially. Worth the cost of entry just for chao garden.

But not since then. Generations looked like it was going to be but whiffed it spectacularly

The Sonic/Shadow action stages in the Adventure games were decent. And Adventure 2’s stages were a little less open so you didn’t have as many camera troubles.

I didn’t play it, but wasn’t Colors on Wii supposed to be okay?

It was supposed to be.

It wasn’t.

I mean look, some of them definitely have their moments, maybe even all of them. They all have a really good stage here and there, or an exciting set piece. But none of them are really good games.

From what I’ve seen and/or played of it, Sonic 06 is probably the exception to this. Genuinely can’t think of any redeeming features.

Not sure about that, but Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing with Banjo-Kazooie was excellent.

Oh, the 2D games are fabulous up to and including Sonic 3 & Knuckles, and then Sonic Mania. Nobody has yet to find a really good template for 3D Sonic, but they’ve existed for so long now that it’s all a lot of players will have ever known, so they can’t really change the tried and tested 60-70%-Metacritic-score formula too much. I think it’s doomed to be a bit naff forever.

When roblox looks more sonic than a sonic game. Seriously this is how it should have looked. I’ll never quite fully understand the inner workings of sonic team. I get the impression the director allows ideas to throw freely, which is good, but basically any idea is seen as worthy.

They also do a lot of what Nintendo does in that each game must have a new gimmick to sell it on. Can’t be refined or more of the same, has to have a fresh idea which rarely works out. I also get the feeling the team is small, young and potentially contractors which is why the quality varies so much and the games take so long to come out.

Yeah, this is gorgeous. It should definitely look like this.

Sonic Lost World is the best-looking 3D Sonic game I reckon, and exactly how a 3D Sonic game should look. Proper badniks too, not the same generic robot copy and pasted a few hundred times. It also had a run button iirc, which I think all 3D Sonics should have, as he’s too twitchy otherwise.

The level design was crap/frustrating though, which killed it stone dead.

And a chill, relaxing Sonic game is a bad thing because... Sonic?

when you're struggling to make a decent Sonic game period, the constant flailing and lurching from concept to concept isn't helpful, no.

like... if Sega want to make a chill, relaxing adventure game then they should do that without any of the baggage of the Sonic franchise. when you take away Sonic's pace, what are you left with? good combat mechanics? engaging story telling? satisfying traversal? Sonic Team have proven they're unable to deliver any of that, so yeah, it's a bad thing.

We're not talking hypothetical non-Sonic games right now though. I like the look of this game, which has Sonic in it and looks relaxing.

Maybe it'll be shit, but hey! What we've seen so far looks good to me. If it wasn't a Sonic game and featured exciting new character Balder McDash from Planet Sputnik I'd still think it looks like something I might enjoy.

Honestly it's just Sonic Team for me, it could be Balder McDash  as welll and as soon as the Sonic Team logo appears I'm like nope. They've needed to refine the core concept for over a decade now and they haven't so Sonic of the Wild looks terrible. I hope you do enjoy it though, honestly.

Same! I'm not saying I will enjoy it, just that what I've seen so far looks like my kinda thing. I'm in the mood for something where you can just sort of glide over the hills as the grass wafts in the breeze, destroy a few robots, grind guardrails up some random structure and potter about in the rain. The less guided, the better.

That said, I can understand the current approach being offputting to some. Fans will be looking at something completely different from what they expect, and hooking non-Sonic fans is always a tough sell.

A chilled format focused on traversal wouldn't be the worst idea. I used to waste an hour or two just moving around the world of JSRF with my post-game save. A huge amount of time on my Gravity Rush save was spent getting those upgrade crystals. Maybe it's an approach that wouldn't suit Sonic's speed, but the world should be big enough to accommodate your faster hold-forward-to-win gameplay. ;)

It just looks so empty and sterile to me with no art style or direction that ties it all together. We've got a whole month of coverage from IGN so maybe as we see more it will come together but so far to me it feels like we are in another classic Sonic Cycle :(

A bit like the fan game Sonic Utopia? Since it's not a commercial game, it can get away with having few enemies and hazards, and no real goals. You just pick a direction and run across a really wide landscape.

I think it's a good illustration of what @Kayin Amohsays about how a Sonic game could be quite relaxing to play:

yeah I was gonna say, have you played Gravity Rush? The movement in those games are magical, once you get the hang of the physics and a couple of odd design decisions (especially the Vita version) it's supremely fun to just move about in. sucks that series is dead, there isn't a lot like it really.
