Sonic Frontiers - the game

you'd need the best level designers in the industry to make an 'open world' platformer that tricks players into going down predefined routes but feel like its their choice.

don't see sonic team managing it so either the trailer is a bait and switch or this is going to be pap

The thing about Lost World is that the actual concept was sound, the team lacked resources and experience in making a good game in that mould. I'm pretty sure a bunch of level designers and programmers moved from Sonic Team to Nintendo and worked on Super Mario Odyssey.

Sega's problem is they never manage these projects well and don't give their staff opportunities to develop and grow. Every time they release a critical failure, they have a crisis and throw everything out and start again.

There should've been a Lost World 2 and they should've given the team actual time to work on polishing and evolving their concepts. That's why I don't have a lot of faith in this one, pulling off open world platforming that's meaningful is really hard and either there's going to be a lot of wasted space or Sega are gonna reuse the shit out of everything.

This reminds me a lot of the first Sonic 2006 trailer. Lush, green apparent open world? Check. Sonic appears alone? Check.

We all know what happens next.

There was an Unleashed trailer that fooled people during the trailer’s runtime. Blue skies and side scrolling for the first minute or so before it cut to the 3D movement and Werehog brawling... 😔

So much about Sonic: Lost World nailed what a 3D Sonic game should be: 60fps (on Wii U), colourful graphics and stages, not just holding forward and boost until you hit something, enemies that aren’t just the same orange robot copied and pasted etc. Even though it copied a lot from Super Mario Galaxy it was still wildly different from any other 3D Sonic, and all the better for it.

However, it was just as frustrating to play thanks to imprecise controls and some terrible level design. Such a shame.

That, and for a long time Sonic games were annual and on ridiculously short development schedules. This has been in the works for a long time (I'm still amazed they didn't shove it alongside the first film) so some small hope there.

I think that game is the source of the top two screenshots in the Sonic Cycle image, isn't it? (The other one being Sonic & the Black Knight.)

“Originally it was planned to be released on this year, the 30th anniversary of Sonic, but we have postponed the release for a year in order to further brush up the quality. Not only for this title, but during the development phase, we have been steadily conducting analysis to improve the quality of the title before release, such as introducing game testing based on external evaluations, and I have a feeling that it will become a good game and have high expectations for it.”

Sounds plausible...

It seems likely it was delayed but whether that results in a good finished product is a different question entirely.

It seems like a giant red flag when, after 4 years of development and a year from release, they have only shown a (weirdly low frame rate) cinematic trailer and no gameplay.

My guess is they are having major development issues - if the game was in a good place then they would have shown more by now.
