I do think that's the big issue with Extra as a tier. It's not bad in and of itself, but it's not standing alone in the marketplace, and Game Pass seems like such a better offering. Sure, the Sony first-party stuff isn't on there. I guess I can see why not and fine? But it's the mid-tier and indie stuff not appearing that really splits the difference for me.

I actually like the mid-tier, because it's a larger library of bigger games at a cheaper price than Gamepass, so it actually complements my gaming preference which is - 

 

PS5 - main platform, I buy games I want to play physically but also enjoy buying and playing digital games or curios from PS+ Extra

Switch - buy games physically that are suited to that platform

Xbox Series S - I use this for the cool and weird indie games that come day one to Gamepass. I basically don't buy anything for the platform, it's a game pass machine. 

I also own a Series X in a different room but I'm now finding it to be a bit of a superflous purchase as I've totally gravitated to buying physical PS5 games. So it's also a Gamepass machine that's a bit over kill for what is imo Gamepass' killer feature - the new indie game hotness. 

 

I did also pony up for the Premium tier on PS+ and it's a total waste, will not be renewing that.

My sub is coming up for renewal in January so looking at options to renew, are there no PS+ discounted codes knocking around these days? Its a fairly easy decision to come off the top tier as streaming hasn’t been great but mainly I use my PS5 for GT7 and not sure ive played anything from the extended library.

 

My thinking is Sony will do some form of Black Friday deal, best to stack up then on whatever the deal is?

Yeah, I’m waiting for this. Double discount by purchasing cheap PSN credit too, and using that to renew.

 

Some Plus/Now offers in the past have only been for new/lapsed subs though iirc.

My sub runs out on 22nd of this month, so absolutely perfect timing for Black Friday (Not really as I will have gotten it in a previous Black Friday deal).

 

I upgraded to Premium when PS did the switch over, as it only cost me 11 quid or so, but I am seeing very little benefit to that tier at all (Other than playing Super Star Wars a couple of times), so will probably drop down to Extra this time out.

 

Just a case now of finding the best way to do it, although that Shop To Deal above does look hard to beat.

Thats what I call timing, its madness that I now need to go look at the tiers to work out what I ‘need’ - ive had PSN in every form since the original PS2 beta stuff and have no clue so it must be maddening for parents of kids who want to play FIFA / COD 🤬

Good deal, my PS+ expired a fair bit ago and I was waiting for this. I'll be going Essential as I only really play one game 99% of the time and need to save every penny possible but Extra for that price is an absolute bargain for a great service.

 

Premium is absolute shit as everyone says, avoid.

I mean, it’s 10 quid more a year with this deal for game streaming, so if that’s something you’d use it’s also a bargain. The current ‘retro’ selection is shit, but the tier isn’t as a whole. Saying that, the retro section also includes some PS4 remakes/remasters too for some reason, so you’re not just limited to the PS1/PS2/PS3 charity shop bargain bucket.

 

Essentially, if you won’t use the streaming, just go for Extra.

I've been playing through Tsushima and enjoying it... it's quite Assassin's Creed-esque.

That would be too sensible. You have to top-up to the end of your current sub. I'm sticking with the base one, got too big a backlog to add more to it

I’ve upgraded to extra, for £12 (before deciding whether to do a year for £65 tomorrow) and I think I’m actually appalled.

  • the list of games doesn’t seem to give an obvious way of filtering PS4 from PS5 (probably because there’s very few PS5 games on there)
  • the list includes games that aren’t in extra (hello RDR2, no I don’t want to buy you again) - I mean I’m looking at the game catalogue under ps plus, extra. I’ve even rebooted to see if it goes away. This is frankly beyond appalling and moving towards “little Johnny bought a game thinking it was free” level mendacity
  • the games in the list include some that seem locked to premium, though that’s less evil than the above
  • Half the time the list doesn’t include games that are part of ps plus extra
  • I think there are actually more games created by Microsoft owned studios on there than Sony owned studios.

It’s an even worse UI experience than the PS Store normally.

So in the latest ‘How can we be an even bigger bunch of cunts than we currently are’ Sony news….. the Black Friday deals are live but you can only get the discount on the tier you are currently on. If you’re sub has run out you can get 25% of each tier but if like me you are on the top tier the discount can only be applied to the top tier 🤬

Yep, as soon as they stopped the PS Plus Gift Cards it was bound to get worse.

Solving your requirement is 100% the definition of "nice to have" that I'd let customer services pick up vs fixing through software. It has platform wide implications in so many ways, and I guarantee that an automated downgrading of plan on renewal date based on stacking different sub levels would result in such momentous fuckery across the data associated with your account, you'd end up locked out and complaining about that in 12 months.

 

I also guarantee their sales staff totally decided they don't care about your use case.
