Yeah but it's like they don't check if the incoming fullback can cross the ball so churn through loads. I mean..just buy 2-3 genuinely good ones, not 6. Both Wan Bissaka and Dalot are so bad at it I'm not sure it's worth persevering with them if they can't do such a basic football skill.

they must think they can coach it. I mean, I'm old and was never good at football but I feel like if it was my job to spend 8 hours a day training for five days a week, I'd probably be able to get reasonably good at crossing. It's not actually true, I daresay.

Yeah, I can see Dalot doing pretty well with proper coaching and in a team that play with an actual system rather than just Ole like vibes. I imagine if Malacia was a right back we'd have gone for him regardless.

Another week’s rolled by then and still no signings. What the fuck are they playing at? It doesn’t instil much confidence, does it?

Well, here we are again.

I don't think we'll get Antony.  Ajax don't need to sell and have put the price up accordingly.  Perhaps Gnabry could be an alternative, as he is entering the last year of his contract so might be cheaper than Antony.  I think if we do sign those four that will be the budget gone anyway.

The worrying thing for me is that none of those players is a defensive midfielder...

The Anthony money will come from all of the sales we’re definitely totally actually going to make!

FDJ looks to be our new DM but more in the creative mould of a Carrick or Scholes. Put an energetic pressing machine next to him and that’s our double pivot for the season. Fred, Mctom and apparently Garner can all do that and I reckon with proper coaching all three will be decent options.

Yeah just saw that. Could have said it earlier. Why would any club come in for him on his wages, why can't he and his agent contact clubs? I just googled that, they can do that right? Only a few clubs could afford him and he doesn't fit in anywhere in them. Where can he go?

I know I’m in the minority here. I didn’t want him back, I’m happy he’s going and I hope it happens quickly. You’re right though, he could could have said back in May. The last thing they need is a long drawn out circus again.

Saying that, the club must have known this was a possibility, and if they’ve planned for it smartly (it’s a lot to ask from United admittedly) it’s a good opportunity to get Ten Hag a player or two he really wants for his attack.

Will be interesting how this all develops!

They have been. There were reports a few weeks ago they had been in touch with Bayern and then the next week they had apparently been talking to Chelsea.

Not when our two main strikers for next season are Rashford and Martial! Maybe we’ll see a youth players come in and surprise us like Rashford did when he first got his chance.

Makes me wonder if it’s down to the slow progress in the transfer market. I’m just speculating and being pessimistic as usual, but Ronaldo could be seeing behind the scenes and doesn’t feel confident that all the club’s talk is actually going to amount to much.

With what? We wouldn't get much of a transfer fee for him.

I couldn’t say - but I imagine they will be looking to find a replacement of some sort. Directly or indirectly.

He’d be leaving for no fee next year, so whether they replaced him this summer or next, I doubt they’d accounted for a fee in their budget.

His wages are a big factor, around 480k p/w - ~£25m a season, so that’s something to consider, gives some flexibility.

With Ronaldo you’re mostly replacing goals, I imagine Ten Hag will be wanting to see goals from all over the front 4 players again. Last season everything went through Ronaldo so everyone else’s goal dried up and end with a pretty low (record I think?) goals scored return. Ten Hag is a good coach so will be wanting to change this up whether Ronaldo goes or not.

I don’t know how Ten Hag is planning to set up, so it’s tough to know how he’d like to replace him, and how much that would cost.

The problem is that any forward at the level we aspire to would be extremely expensive. You can't dip into the Norwegian league for an undiscovered gem anymore. You can't get a Premier League quality striker for less than £60m-£80m these days. Liverpool just paid more than that for a guy who is largely unproven at the top level, and they're normally quite sensible about transfers.

The point is moot anyway, I would expect. Unless Ronaldo is willing to take a massive pay-cut, no-one is going to be interested in signing him.  There aren't many clubs in the world who would pay £500k a week wages for a 37-year-old even if he is a goat.

I don't think a striker is neccessary if Ronaldo leaves. Without him the season before the team scored 16 more goals in the league.  I don't get this blunt attitude about goals where you insert a striker in and he gets a certain number. You've got City playing whole seasons without a recognised no.9 or that Martial, Greenwood, Rashford scored more in a season than Firmino, Mane, Salah as they won virtually every game they played, something which still doesn't make sense but then you think Liverpool played far more as a team and so many different players chipped in with goals.

I get that Greenwood is no longer an option, Martial and Rashford have gone missing, but then Elanga was getting crucial goals in consecutive games last season. Meaning he's not a long term option who can do that over a season but that teams find a way. Top teams who expect to score, teams at the bottom of the table without anyone to score get relegated.

Bruno at false 9 as Ten Hag used Tadic where he scored 38 in 56 games is an option, i just think if the overall play massively improves which we're all pretty sure it will then chances will be created and that's the most important thing, and with more chances will come more goals. Sancho will score more too. Fernandes is a natural quick finisher, putting him out wide is a waste. Anyone lays the ball off to him near the area and i'm 85% certain he will score.

Mertens at Napoli is also another example of an attacking mid converting into a prolific striker.

Strikers aren't just rare but seem a massive risk. I was sure Werner would fit the premier league but the Chelsea curse continued, then Lukaku seems to be involved in a conspiracy by Inter Milan to trick Chelsea into spending vast sums on him. Is anyone sure about Darwin, i'm not. Though Jota has been great and any attacking player under Klopp seems to do well so he probably will. If United bought him i'd have little faith.

This is all true, but I wasn't particularly talking about a specialised striker.  Any kind of forward, wide or central commands a big fee amd big wages, although central strikers are more expensive because they generally do the thing that gets you the numbers in the only column that actually matters in terms of the match result.

If Ronaldo leaves, our options across the front three would be Rashford, who had an alarmingly terrible season last season (and there are persistent rumours that he wants to leave) Martial, who has gone off the boil to such an extent that six months ago it seemed extremely unlikely that he would play for the club again, Sancho, who would probably not be able to occupy that central spot, Elanga, who is young and I'm not convinced that he's a top-level talent anyway, and Fernandes, who is a midfielder albeit one who likes to operate in that area of the pitch.  It's not that easy to change players from one position to another.  Fernandes scores his goals by arriving in the box rather than waiting in the box and making a move to find the space.  I've never seen him make a forward's move off the ball to score a goal.  You need to be able to do that to play there.  He might well be capable of it, who knows?  Perhaps the persuit of Eriksen is a hint that Fernandes will be playing a Tadic role next season.

Whatever happens I think next season will be difficult and we will need to be patient.  I can see our league position being worse next season, to be honest.  Things are so bad that I think we genuinely need to accept whatever happens and reserve judgement on Ten Hag completely for at least 18 months.  I can't see some of the vocal elements of our online fanbase being that patient though.

He did something similar at Juve last year I think, the only difference is they had some rube on the hook. 😅

My hope is that Chelsea's new owner is just daft enough to bite.

He wants Champions League football, but none of the serious CL teams want him - so unless he's happy to sign for Lincoln Red Imps or Shamrock Rovers, he's screwed.
