Sorry Hamus, this is such a silly argument. Are you saying someone needs to have kids to comment on the relationship between father and son in a videogame? It's like when someone comments on the poor writing of a film they don't like, and some utter dickhead pipes up with, "written many films, have you?"

 

You never gave the relationship between Kratos and Atreus a chance by writing the game off far too early. Also, you invoked godwin's law. :P

I am not saying that, in pointing out it's a fact that appears to be true in this case.

 

I never gave it a chance to spend what, 15 hours amazing at a young boy being bullied? I guess I'm too sensitive.

 

I didn't use Godwin's law, I highlighted how it had been used already. Something isn't bad because the other thing is worse.

Hmmm, I see where rooster is coming from. This game was probably in pre-production in 2018, they probably had an idea PS5 was coming back then but wouldn't have known much more than 'it's more powerful'. It would have been a huge risk to commit to PS5 only because a) they have no experience of PS5 dev b) Smaller audience. 

 

So it would have been made as a 'PS4 game with a possible next gen version' in mind. That was the much safer option. So they built it like a PS4 game with certain settings scaled up and enabled on PS5 similar to all other PS4/PS5 games. 

 

So when they do finally make a PS5 version from the ground up, that's when they can throw the PS4 rulebook out the window and develop to the PS5 experience. This will likely coincide with a major overhaul on their inhouse engine where they can now justify spending resources on developing new features that the PS4 wasn't capable of.

 

So whilst I don't think it's fair to say it doesn't look any more graphically advanced than the first one (on PS5 especially), it is using the same palette so to speak. If they made a PS5 game, with final PS5 devkits from the go with that being the only platform. I would be very confident that there would be a more obvious 'leap' in quality.

Kratos' character is another version of the "repressed father trying to make his son a man with tough love" trope. The game is not even subtle about it, I remember cut scenes where Kratos almost wavers and shows Atreus some tenderness but then pulls back. 

 

I thought their relationship was really well done actually with Kratos desperate to make his son tough enough to survive, and Atreus knowing that his father loves him and wanting to please him, but getting to an age where he is just starting to rebel.

a) Don't double-down. And it's not true. 

 

b) Who mentioned Hitler prior to you in this thread? I had a brief look but couldn't see.

No it wouldn't. In case you missed it, Kratos accidentally killed his wife and child in a fit of rage in God of War 1 which scarred him for life (literally, the white marks on his skin is the ash IIRC). Him being a parent in God of War 2018 in probably not by choice and it's obvious he struggles as lot with paternity. He raises his voice to Atreus, he clearly has to suppress his anger at some points but he never lays a hand on him. There's moments where Kratos halts himself from showing affection. Karats has issue ok and a little brat whining about stuff does not help keep the peace. That said, they both grow. A lot.

 

Give it a chance with an open mind.

That said, I tried to do the same with A Plague's Tail and I feverishly hated that so it's fair if you do not like it.

As usual, this is not a guarantee that the game will come out in 2022 and video game development is so turbulent that you should never trust a release date until the product in question is in your hands. But this Gamereactor report appears to be false.

As of this week the game is still on track for November. People working on it say it's huge and seem to be pretty excited about it. Reminds me of the buzz I was hearing before the 2018 one.
