mmm... I've just done the 2nd license and I thought there seemed something odd about the Dirt test.  Was trying over and over and couldn't get close to gold; and it didn't seem possible to get the level of grip that the demonstration was showing.  Whereas I didn't have much trouble with the others up to that point.

This game feels like a favourite old shirt - its been 25 years and not a lot has changed under the hood. I was taken aback by the fact there is still only one replay camera?!

The Cafe/Menu things seem to have me currently locked in a fetish (of its own making) for America Boatcars and everything is now set in the US to race in - for the first time I had to put my hand in my pocket and buy a shite American Truck thing in order to compete to progress.

Challenges and licenses are addictive though, especially with friends online to compare against

Thanks for the races guys - don’t know if it was the car or GT7’s handling but I felt really on it tonight! Sorry to @Junker for his spin on race 1 - you were definitely quicker than me. I’ll happily take my first MNRC win though!

Second race at Suzuka was brilliant. @TheRallyBart was doing things with that car that physics shouldn’t allow. Was really close at the end but happy with P2 :). Suzuka in the wet was… stressful.

See you again next week, chaps!

Hopefully issues are resolved soon as it's stopping my progress now.

Also. What's happening with Sport mode? Is it always going to be tuned cars with no BOP ?

They will be having BoP races too :) - this week’s Race C is a BoP GR3 race at Daytona.

What a janky shambles this is online. I'll not bother with it outside of mnrc I think. I reckon it'll be six months before they sort it.

Will try some wheel based laps at Daytona in the supra this weekend, see if I can replicate that 1.47.5

I'll wager I can't.

Rally stages are so ridiculous 😂 I'm the white car and overtook here by flying over his head after touching a bump.

‘Yep, that’s me. You’re probably wondering how I ended up in this situation,’

So online is indeed a janky shambles at the moment.

  • Last night we had 2 lobbies, with both hosts unable to start the race because "a player is still initialising" even though they weren't, only fixed when we randomly chose a victim and they disconnected.
  • 3 people crashed on the start line of one race - I was one of them but I could immediately reconnect and spectate the race without any issues.
  • Lag was evident throughout, but only for certain cars, and not consistent across all players.  E.g. I could be having a really close, smooth race with another car, and see no lag, but other drivers would see either one or both of us skipping around.  The game "renders" the other cars laggily, so it has them skipping across the road, with the associated annoying tyre screeches.  It makes driving in a pack nearly unbearable, even if you do manage to avoid each other.
  • Maybe not online specific, but the day-night cycle doesn't seem to loop, so our 10x time lobby, starting at twilight, got to about midnight and stayed there.  We were racing for a about 30-40 minutes, so would have expected some sign of dawn, but nothing.
  • Lobby admin is still a mess - no in-lobby settings changes at all, no qualifying, no reverse or custom grids.  It's a really bare-bones implementation.

But... the driving is superb.  The handling of the Mazda Roadsters in the wet-but-drying High Speed Ring race was amazing - you can really feel the car moving about, losing and regaining grip, and feeling the effects of the drier and wetter bits of track.   Likewise, the Gr3s at Daytona feel on the edge the whole time so it's really satisfying when you hook it up.  The day-night cycle here (and everywhere I guess) is stunning.

Thanks to Beezerly and @scoobysi for our races at High Speed Ring and Brands Hatch respectively.

Oh, and has anyone else noticed the interesting thing in the sky over Daytona?

For next week, can I suggest an open PP race?  My thoughts are we pick a half-decent stock car like the Radical, and if you don't want to spend time faffing with a car you just bring that, completely stock.  The other option is to choose any other car and tune it however you like - engine, tyres, weight, whatever - to match the PP of the stock Radical.

I think this will be massively dependent on track choice, but I have tried it at Brands Hatch Indy, and my lightweight mini on sticky tyres could match laptimes with the stock Radical down to the tenth of a second, once you get your head around driving completely differently.  I suspect the Radical would have the edge over the GP circuit though.

If this leads to too much carnage due to the radically*  different cornering speeds, maybe we could also try a version where we specify a tyre choice, but allow free reign over everything else?

* sorry

Thanks to whoever invited me into the party last night -- barely started this and my 8yo was having a go, so didn't jump in! To be fair, don't think I've unlocked online yet.

If I keep with it and figure out how online works/what cars I need, I'll happily lose to you all one magical Monday.

I had no idea what was going on last night.

Everybody leaving and joining, I was sat there thinking are they really or is it just some visual bug? And why?

I’m not even sure how everyone knew to use that car. I just saw them all, and backed out to quickly buy it.

The daily marathon ticket I got from that did get the the gold bars though which was nice.

I’d like to join in the Monday night stuff at some point but I’m literally the noobiest of them all so it’ll take a while to get up to speed to even be close to bringing up the rear.

I did try one of the track tutorials in the Radical (?)… that went well*

*terribly. Ridic fast.

Don't worry, when I get back I'll likely be near the back. There was always a good mix of abilities and you'll find yourself improving all round by being around other people rather than the AI.

I probably can't get PS+ for another week or so, so in the mean time, what cars should I get liveried up? I did my GTO last night, got a couple of adjustments to make before I post a pic though

Mazda Roadster Touring Car - 90,000 Cr (though there were an awful lot of default liveries around last night - for shame!)

Radical SR1 - 126,500 Cr

Your choice of Gr4 and Gr3 cars.

You win a Gr4 for getting bronzes on all of the International B license, and a Gr3 for getting bronze on the Super license.  It might be easier to grind out the 450k credits to just buy one though, as that means you don't have to do S-10 :)

Just the Supra in that instance.

The sound of the wind rushing, and the rain, is a great touch in this. But so much of this offline game feels so identical to all the others it's unbelievable how much they just haven't changed at all and yet in 2022 it feels quite refreshing - maybe because its quite a large offline component.

Going back to basics then for an arcade racer - setting the stage for a new Namco Japan "Ridge Racer 8"

I really hope some new original tracks come along soon. I was driving some of PD's original tracks from GT Sport and they're generally wonderful. There isn't a single new one in GT7. Only remade older GT tracks and even then is it just 3? It's been years in the making!

Still, the handling is excellent but it does feel unfinished.

Can some of the Monday night people add me on PSN please?  I'm SpeedyYellow on PSN.

I doubt I'll be able to make the Monday nights but I would very much like to have a few more people to compete against on the various ranking boards.

I added you (sunversusmoon) -- always nice to have more times to be jealous of!
