I'm personally more interested because they're trying something new. I've already pumped hundreds of hours into their version of the XCOM mechanics. Twice.

Also I'm pleased the aesthetic in the actual game doesn't appear to be grim dark as much as the first trailer was.

Plus another reason it's probably different is they will likely be evolving the XCOM mechanics further in the inevitable XCOM 3 that should head to the underwater domain in future. So I'm not surprised it's branching out.

I'm seeing a lot of "this game isn't for me because they did something I don't want" lately, rather than "interesting choice, I'm curious how that will play" in reactions to loads of games, and it's quite baffling. It feels like treating games as food rather than entertainment, being uninterested in anything that might surprise. (We're not all gourmands though I get it.)

I'm baffled that you find it baffling.

It's not the first SRPG to use card-based combat, so that on its own it not new (though I'm aware many players may not have experienced it before.)

But many people - myself included - don't like deck-building or card-based mechanics and just because it is now dressed-up in Marvel clothes isn't going to change that. I get that not knowing which cards will be drawn each round adds a more dynamic tactical layer, but that isn't the kind of experience I want.

And that's fine, I'm not angry or sulking that it's not for me, just a bit disappointed that it won't be the game I thought it was. Life goes on.

https://www.pcgamer.com/uk/marvels-midnight-suns-leak-reveals-spider-man-scarlet-witch-and-a-release-date/

Quote

The leaked images have been taken offline by a copyright claim issued by 2K Games (although they're still easy enough to find if you're interested), but as noted by Nils Ahrensmeier on Twitter(opens in new tab), they indicated an October 6 release date, and that three editions will be available: The standard release, an Enhanced Edition with five premium skins (Captain America (Future Soldier), Captain Marvel (Mar-Vell), Magik (Phoenix 5), Nico Minoru (Sister Grimm), and Wolverine (X-Force), and a Legendary Edition, with 23 premium skins and the four-DLC season pass.

If that's accurate then it seems like this has to show up at one of the showcases next week.

XCOM with card-based combat and a Marvel theme sounds like my dream game, I'm well up for this.

I hope it's big on gameplay rather than cut-scenes though, the cosplay Avengers they've got in this look as bad as in the SE game from last year.

I figured out what it is about that trailer that bothers me. 1) The emo edgelord costume bullshit is so 2006 and b) why would you license Master of Puppets and then mangle it by doing a Marvel orchestral hack job when you could have just licensed the S&M version which is fucking amazing and better?

If you're one of those people who insist on putting dates in thread titles, when game release date announcements are about as reliable as a fishnet condom, at least have the good grace to update them when it inevitably gets delayed.

Even worse is when they put something like "split screen inbound" in the title, a rumour which was debunked a few days later and 5 years on it's still in the thread title 😂

I didn't realise this is literally out this Friday. Where are the reviews? I'm guessing there are embargos in place?

Previews have been very positive I believe, depending on how much you like Fire Emblem type social stuff between missions.

Wait, does that mean it’s going to have an offspring mechanic allowing you to literally create brand new Superheroes? GOTY if so!

I think the player character is an existing hero, so no 'create your own' I don't think.

The main character is a new creation for the game. You can choose whether they're male or female and select from a number of preset faces. You also have dialogue choices and can tailor their ability set to some extent as the game goes on, which gives you some say over the type of hero they are.
