Marvel’s Midnight Suns - PS/XB/SW/PC - October 2022

Hm, I was imagining a proper Marvel Ultimate Alliance like roster of heroes to play with. But that trailer suggests they've gone for a grimdark tone and only that disappointing line up will be playable?

I was in for a colourful Marvel superhero XCOM but that trailer is not at all what I imagined.

That’s one of the worst cover versions of a song ever. Just… no.

Indeed. Godawful. The original version would've been so much better.

Needs more Moon Knight.

If we don't get him, and they shoe horn in Cap and Iron Man just to have some bankable characters, I'll have a little nerd pout. But then cave in and buy it anyway cos playing something Dr Strange-centric is a dream come true.

edit: Oh wait, its Suns not Sons. Still the same theme I guess but I guess.

Seems it's an original character created for the game called `The Hunter`

There was talk of the game allowing you to create your own unique character so it could be intended to represent that, or they just decided to take liberties and give Lilith a new daughter (she's had so many offspring and I'm not totally familiar with the lore, so it could be an obscure existing character I guess.).

I can't really think anything about this until we seem some gameplay in a week's time, but apparently there's no permadeath (expected when dealing with licensed characters) and there's a hub area you can walk around and build relationships with your team, according to Era.

It'll be interesting to see what this game is.

When Jeff Grubb mentioned it, my hope was that you basically get to make/generate your own characters like Xcom. Maybe have a few real ones dip in and out from time to time.

So, you'll have like the local bench heroes, dealing with a feud at the pork pie factory or whatever. But then Iron Man shows up with an issue and recruits you for a mission against a bigger threat. Some of your team probably die, but that's ok because nobody cares. Iron Man flies off and you get back to the beef at the pork pie factory.

It doesn't seem like that's the game?

Midnight Sons: Meet the Marvel Comics supernatural superheroes who inspired the Midnight Suns

(Notice who's not in the picture? Fucking Wolverine)

I'm not familiar with any of those comics' stories. For me, the orange colour scheme and mystical flames reminded me of Fear Itself, where they get Asgardian weapons and costumes:

It actually sounds more like Fire Emblem than XCom

Although there's no permadeath so I wonder whether missions are a straight succeed/fail or whether you you can fail but still progress (like in traditional Xcom games)?

If its like Fire Emblem then 99% of the "gameplay" will be talking in the hub area :(

I don't see the problem with that. Anyone who has played Slay the Spire will know it can be superb. It also works fantastically in the lesser talked about Chaos Reborn.

I'm surprised any strategy fan would be writing it off before trying it just because of "cards". It's just an abstraction like any game mechanic after all.
