GTA Remastered Trilogy (GTA3/San Andreas/Vice City) - ah sh*t, here we go again

I’ve been playing some more - now on San Fierro in SA.

All the flaws can’t distract from the fact this game is very very fun.

but the frame rate is fucking dreadful on my base Xbox One. It’s so juddery, feels like 20fps consistently. And I’m not even a frame rate guy, so this is really noticeable.

All I wanted really, was a good draw distance and the aiming to be improved. Got both of those so I'm pretty happy. I'm playing on my plasma though so haven't had to deal with the HDR bug. It is rather jarring though, going from something like Far Cry 6, to this and it only running at 30fps in "quality" mode on the Series X. This thing should be capable of running at 120fps.

Played a few hours of SA last night and while I can’t disagree it’s a very disappointing port, it was still mostly good nostalgic fun. Mowing down Ballas blaring out Epic will never get old.

The most annoying aspect I’ve found, which I haven’t seen mentioned is the voice tracks are terrible in places. In a lot of cutscenes I’m finding that the final word a character says gets cut off and the in car conversations are really low bitrate like they are chatting over a poor mobile phone line. Really odd.

They have had to pull this on PC, even people who have already bought and paid for it can't currently play it.

The reason?

They only disabled the music tracks they didn't have the licence for, instead of actually removing them. So people were getting a copy of Running With The Night included in the Vice City game files, for example.

What an absolute shitshow.

These ports are for whatever reason significantly more demanding than even GTA V on maximum "turn it up to PCMR 11" settings so I'd dial back performance expectations. Oddly enough, the first two games are harder to run than the more ambitious San Andreas, WTF!

I assume things like alpha and just drawing too much shit at once are responsible for it, those are the usual "optimisation" route.

Absolutely. I was just about to say this. It's rather annoying.

Played a couple of hours streaming on PC and everything else seems OK... so far.

I thought you'd be able to replay missions like in 5, but it seems not. For those that care about achievements, there are a few which are mission specific tasks, so I hope you can get more than one chance if you fail.

That's at least one patch more than I realistically expected for this. Okay, so it's to remove the music even further, but still. We can't reasonably claim anymore that R* can't be arsed supporting this game post-launch

Tried a little bit of San Andreas yesterday as I'd already downloaded it. Got as far as the first achievement which prompted me to stop.

Like others have said the image is too dark. Putting aside all the other technical issues for a second I really don't understand what's going on there. Games forcing you to set their brightness level the first time you start them can be an irritant but it's way better than this.

Few more points

-I had forgotten about the RPG elements in this game.

-I don't mind the look of it. It's clearly an old game that's been tarted up but once they sort the performance issues it'll look fine

-Sweets a fucking arsehole.

Tiresomely predictable that Cyberpunk got dragged through the muck for some open world jank because it was a new game whereas this the same or worse are laughed off here because it's a nostalgia title.

It’s not really the same level, is it? Cyberpunk was the most anticipated game of all time, this is a nostalgia curio for old gamers.

I like them! I honestly think they make the game more fun.

It's likewise being reported that people are calling for refunds (and not just on PC).

Metroid Dread has reminded me that it's unacceptable for a game to be released unfinished.  They should, and are, being dragged over the coals for this. They are one of the most successful devs on the planet. It's inexcusable.

Have they added mid mission checkpoints?

Can only speak for SA but yes. They probably aren’t as abundant as you’d like though.

They tend to be at the start of each section of a mission rather than throughout, if that makes sense.

Ahh, sorry, I should have been clearer - I was talking about GTA III, the only one I've played so far.
