Phantom Blood? I started watching the whole of JoJo last November, and I found it a bit tonally different to the later series, more aggressively exaggerated in its anime self-parody style. (Like all the best parodies, you question how much of a deliberate parody it actually is.)

 

Anyway, Diamond is Unbreakable – I agree that the ending is a bit weak, but otherwise enjoyed the Twin Peaks inspired, Persona 4 inspiring slice-of-life romp.

I just hit play on Netlfix. Maybe one needs to be more Anime literate to enjoy this? I've seen all of Ghibli but outside that I've only seen Neon Genesis Evangelion, which I thought was incredible.

Honestly… I don’t know. Watched too many anime series and films in my time to really give an objective opinion. Then again, you liked Evangelion, which is based on a deconstruction of anime tropes, so… Give JoJo another watch, but be aware of how ridiculous and over the top it is?

I’ve watched a fair bit of anime and Ghibli is practically a genre unto itself and NGE is very different to a lot of anime. It has some bits which have dated poorly but on the whole it’s about a million times mature than a lot of anime out there. 
 

If you want to try watching something a bit silly and irreverent, I’d recommend One Punch Man. It’s on Netflix (at least S1 is) and brilliant. Much more interesting than JoJo, in my opinion.

Although it has modern animation the first series is an accurate portrayal of an 80s Manga. I don't know if it's a parody but it's certainly a homage to stuff like FotNS and I can see can see completely why the first episodes can put people off. It took me a while before I picked up the series after initially dropping it - but I now have a lot of fondness for the first series.

 

The characters aren't written well and the the story is cliché but there's an ernest charm to it and it has so many memorable moments that will stick with you. The action's pretty good as well and there's some very 80s fights in there.

 

The second season is much better Imo and has a really, really spectacular ending but is still very much In that 80s vibe with some ropey dialogue and strange moments.

 

3 retcons the story/power system and is the best straight action season, the quality levels up again and there's a lot hilarious moments and strategic fights.

 

The last 3 series are a lot more modern and experimental, varying quite a lot in a number of ways. It's definitely worth sticking with anywho!

Winter though for another 12 episodes, it's killing me!

Each episode they go through 3 episodes of JoJo in-depth with a couple of people who haven't seen it before and it's really fun. It's Giantbomb and SuperEyePatchWolf, honestly I look forward to each episode more than anything else right now.

 

It's semi-weekly and very entertaining.

I'm a long time fan of the manga who has been very slowly catching up with the anime. I started Diamond is Unbreakable recently and it's bringing back a lot of fond memories. The anime has really raised this arc in my estimation, partly because the scanlation I read all those years ago was of an awful quality, but seeing the crazy, noisy, bizarre town of Morioh brought to life, in those colours, really makes it stand out.

 

Here are a few things I have especially liked:

Okuyasu's reactions to eating Tonio's cooking.

 

The enemy stand is a motherfucking invisible baby.

 

The enemy stand is a motherfucking electrical pylon.

 

Rohan writing "go to hell" on Cheap Trick before he's sucked into the underworld.

 

Kira isn't very complicated, but I still think he's one of the best antagonists in a show full of amazing antagonists.

Kira is defeated by an ambulance reversing over his head.

 

"All these people waiting for their loved ones to come home, sucks to be them I guess."

 

Okuyasu seems to have adopted Stray Cat even though it was pretty keen on murdering everyone. Although, that seems about right for a cat I suppose.

 

Invisible baby's parents are never found?!

 

Araki instead chooses to give us the important details in epilogue, like how Jotaro randomly gets a PhD because he wrote about a starfish he saw on the beach?!?!?!

 

Golden Wind next. All I can remember is that it's about a relative of Dio, it's set in Italy, and there's a guy who can control bullets... I'm sure the rest will come back to me.

I remember Golden Experience using Dio's catchphrase "muda".

 

I'm starting to remember bits now. How Giorno wants to put together his own mafia family. Zip guy, bullet guy, remote-control plane guy. Can't remember what the others did yet, nor much about the antagonist(s).

 

I don't like the OP or ED for this series. I do like the outfits though.

Hard to pick one -Za-Warudo in Stardust Crusaders' intro - was an awesome touch, but I think the Diavolo version of the Golden Wind intro is prolly my favourite.

Finished Golden Wind today.

Coming from Diamond is Unbreakable, it feels like Araki didn't really know what to do with this series. Giorno's ambition is quickly set aside, as is Giorno himself, who rarely has anything to do, until it's decided his Gold Experience has basically the same power to "fix" people as Josuke's Crazy Diamond. It was a useful plot crutch in DiU to keep things moving along, but to reuse the same gimmick here is just lazy.

 

Giorno's uninvolvement wouldn't be so much of a problem, if the other characters were more interesting, but I never really got on with Bucciarati and his gang. I didn't feel anything when any of them died.

 

I liked the episode where Narancia could only lie, but I'm struggling to think what else I'd choose as the highlights of the series.

 

Diavolo was a real mess, but not just in the way Araki intended. Whenever we saw the "Boss" in silhouette, it was very clearly someone who looked like neither Diavolo nor Doppio, which speaks volumes about how little of the overarching plot had been thought about. In another example of laziness, the power of King Crimson was only just barely discernable from Dio's The World.

 

With too much emphasis on the battle of the week, my interest was waning towards the climax, and I nearly skipped all the business with Requiems, Eulogies, and arrows. Diavolo did suffer perhaps the most imaginative and brutal ending for any of the villains so far; having to live for the rest of eternity experiencing nothing but meaningless death after meaningless death.

 

On to Stone Ocean! I remember liking that one quite a bit.
