JoJo's Bizarre Adventure - This thread must be the work of an enemy「STAND」

I know we have a few JoJo fans on these here forums and there's a new series on the way. So I thought I'd see if there was any interest at all in discussion outside the anime megathread as I've seen people who don't venture in there picking it up in the Netflix thread and through the sheer amount of memes it generates.

For people venturing in who are unsure what the hell I'm talking about, beware this thread will likely be full of spoilers, but a brief potted summary.

JoJo's Bizarre Adventure is a manga and subsequent ongoing screen adaptation that loosely follows the bloodline of one family but is mainly about fabulous manly men (and the occasional woman) posing and having adventures of a, ahem, bizarre nature with a side order of copyright infringement. How fabulous you ask?

One thing to keep in mind is that if you do decide to watch it, the first series (particularly the first half of it) is very different to where it eventually ends up. Saying that, even then it starts off fairly crackers and then the insanity shoots to the moon in later installments. A rough outline of each series that's out so far. I'd suggest show spoilers are fair game, but spoiler stuff from the manga.

As it's based on a series that started in 1987 there is occassional problematic element, but to be honest it's remarkably little compared to most stuff from that era and modern stuff being released now.

Phantom Blood (Season 1 - Part 1):  Have you ever wished Bram Stokers's Dracula had more magical kung-fu fights and Dracula was even more of an arsehole.

Battle Tendency (Season 1 - Part 2): Raiders of the Lost Ark meets From Dusk 'Til Dawn, guest starring Nazi Guile from Street Fighter 2.

Stardust Crusaders (Season 3): Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade if Indy enjoyed punching people a lot more and was played by Arnie cosplaying as a young Marlon Brando.

Diamond is Unbreakable (Season 4): A group of plucky teens solve crimes in a small town. Featuring not-David Bowie. Jinkies!

Golden WInd (Season 5): What if Goodfellas starred a boyband?

The other thing to note is the soundtrack of the shows is amazing. Seriously, listen to this banger.

I stopped watching after Stardust Crusaders because I couldn’t get on with watching Crunchy Roll on my telly’s browser and lost interest. But I love those first three series! I’ll watch the rest if Netflix ever get them.

There are a million reasons to love it, but anything that has Pat Metheny Group in the credits is automatically superlative stuff.

Netflix actually released the first trailer for the next series (Stone Ocean) so you have to assume they're going to stick the remaining series up before that comes out.

I like that assumption!

I love that Araki gave Clint Eastwood a painting of Jotaro.

You have to imagine Clint was a bit WTF at being told this character is based on you given how much his artstyle has changed since Stardust Crusaders. Still he was a good sport and even did the pose.

My son has discovered/devoured this (and is collecting the books), and can't stop talking about it.

Is it likely that Netflix will license all the previous series of the anime? My son is really keen I watch it, but I'm absolutely not getting involved with Crunchy Roll and all its ads and glitches.

I see they've added a load of old Gundam, to go along with that new thing they've done.

Apparently it has a good dub. Personally I watched the sub A) so you can watch it the second it comes out and B) the over the top emoting of Japanese voice actors really adds to the bonkers atmosphere, also you'd miss out on Joseph's OH MY GOD moments (posted above) with the dub.

I've dabbled in the series over the years, and mainly came into it because I had the fighting game for one of my consoles.

I watched Stardust each week as it came out and loved every minute of how bizarre and beautiful it all was, off the back of that I got some capsule figures from Japan for my desk at work and found out about the whole naming convention with music / musicians.

Fell out of touch with it and then picked it back up again at the start of last year after picking up the PS4 game really cheap (£3.99) and found out that was doing the whole Jojo multiverse, so I went and read all the manga online to bring me up to speed, so I understood what I had played through and the storyline ramifications of it.

I think Jojo can be a little hit-and-miss for some with how over the top it can be, and some people I know only know of its existence due to the online memes.

The Manga is fantastic and all they've animated so far as been so well done, and I'll be watching whatever Anime they bring out for this.

JoJo dubbed? That sounds like the worst thing imaginable.

I didn't think the dub for SDC was bad at all!

Admittedly, I usually watch the subs if I'm giving it my full attention and use the dub for if I'm using it as background noise, but honestly I do that for all Anime I watch if it has the option of both sub / dub.

If you're talking about stand names then that's deliberate.

It's all the licensing issues I should imagine.

I assume that's why a lot of the names in the video games are the original unchanged ones because of it being subbed by the Japanese themselves, and it's different when it comes to video game releases.

Netflix Japan has all 4 seasons up to and including Golden Wind with English dubs if you're so inclined (subs are better to hear the original stand names imo) and the pretty boring Takashi Miike live action movie based on Diamond is unbreakable- How?

So I daresay it's only a matter of time until they release them all in other territories

You know you can watch things on Crunchyroll in the Brave browser and it removes all the ads?

I'll tell my son to try this on his Chromebook. I'm talking about the Fire Stick app, which simply doesn't work. I don't watch telly on my laptop; it's too much like being at work :)
