Sexualised Characters in Retro Games

Do games with a sexual theme/mood even exist?

Maybe not retro (only two generations old ;) ), but...  Catherine?

It's hardly the most sophisticated take - it feels a bit soap opera to me, and the nightmare monsters have the subtlety of a brick - but during the narrative I feel like it tries to keep the sexiness classy? As in, using implication and suggestion rather than graphic content?

Then again I haven't played it in ages so I may be misremembering. And I never got around to Full Body either...

kunoichi operated as infiltrators, spies and assassins. They spent time in enemy houses, reported secrets and undermined rival houses by any means necessary.

Kunoichi could use their gender to their advantage because women were underestimated as warriors. This made it easier for them to get closer to their targets by posing as maids, geisha, servants and priestesses. In some cases, they were taken on as concubines and mistresses, giving them unparalleled access to all their marks.

It seems like there were many different roles kunoichi took to infiltrate, they were more spies - while sometimes this involved seduction that wasn't necessarily the M.O so you could have had them as a poison fanned geisha or priestesses and still accurately portrayed a kunoichi rather than just go for a "sexy" look.

Obviously, this is putting a modern lens on a retro game but let's not pretend that the character design was motivated by a quest for historical accuracy.

I never claimed historical accuracy. nor did i claim that every kuniochi walked around with their breasts hanging out. but some of them were very much all about seduction mata hari style and mai shiranui was modeled after that. just in a slightly over the top way like with every other fighting game character. and that's fine. there's actually a lot of voluptuous kuniochi in gaming and the notion that its all just superficial softcore porn is ludicrous. red ninja for ps2 is a memorable example of a decent ninja game that would have played completely different had a seductive kunioichi not been its main focus. do you want diversity in gaming or not? I for one definitely preferred playing red ninja over the millionth tenchu game.

Where there kuniochi in the mata hari style though?

From my (admittedly limited) knowledge, scantily clad wasn't the look of the time, by Mati Hari do you mean they had a similar look?

This is a picture of a yujo (the lowest class of prostitute)

Which seems quite far away from mati hari.

Even though you put "serious question" there, that's got to be a joke post, right? Right?

Not a joke.

I honestly think the hand wringing, faux moral-panic nature of posters on this forum is ridiculous. I'm surprised someone hasn't screamed out: Won't someone think of the children!?

We are regressing back to the moral panics of the early 1990s and the US senate hearings.

I honestly thought we had moved beyond this shit and had accepted that content creators can create whatever the fuck they like without any sort of judgement or sanctimonious, self-righteous crusading against them. I had genuinely thought we'd entered an age of liberal freedoms. I am genuinely shocked that a games forum, given that we've all gone through the moral panics (plural) around games, would have so many conservatives as opposed to liberals.

I guess you're all Tory/Trump voters, wanting to bring back traditional Christian values or some shit.

I grew up in a Catholic household and Catholic school, so any time I hear "sexy is bad" it triggers a defiant call for freedom. FREEDOM!

This thread is giving me PTSD flashbacks of the following insipid nonsense:

I'm not even going to bother responding to that absolute trash fire of a post, but we'll done for turning this thread into the gaming equivalent of 'The Female form' thread.

Speaking the truth, Gabesy. :hat:

(Also, it's "well done" - no apostrophe there, bud.)

Should we agree to a mutual blocking so as not to trouble each other any more?

Or I dunno, just ask a mod to ban me if my moral viewpoint is so at odds with the forum. I only keep coming back to check out the Dreamcast thread and sales forum, and end up viewing these other threads.

Based not just on this thread, but also the "boycott Metal Slug Tactics because Saudi Arabia" thread, I'm starting to wonder if everyone on RLLMUK isn't slowly descending into some sort of hysterical mass psychosis. I can't cure everyone, but maybe by voicing my emancipation from the groupthink I can free a few others.

We all know him well don’t we? Author of the untold history of Japanese video games. Not an alt. And I think he has a point, but nobody is going to want to incur the wrath of rllmuk so he’s probably on his own.

Going back to point and scream Donald Sutherland style at the presence of bikini-clad women sprites in games from the 80s seems a wee bit OTT.

Where does the forum stand on Sexy Parodius?

It’s the usual thing of screaming about woke snowflake cancel culture to try and shut down discussion. When all that was happening was a pretty polite topic that was just people commenting that some decisions made in designing old games were a bit rum when a modern eye is cast over them.

The irony being, of course, that they’re the ones acting most offended in the thread.

Did anyone call for a ban or censorship? Or did some people say that they thought certain things look a bit regressive/sexist now?

if people are calling for bans then that is a very different thing to discussing the merits of the way sexism presents in games.

also I am not sure why there is reference to moral panics and banning and tories have been mentioned as no one has suggested anything of the sort.

It's possible to have liberal attitudes to both gender politics and censorship.

"Wish I could go back to the golden era of gaming where you could punch a sexy woman unchallenged" is a conservative viewpoint now I'm afraid, the world has changed since you last looked in the mirror and said "I am a liberal"

When people talk about the sexualised characters in older games, they're talking about the default representation of women.

Phwoar! the entire concept of just sticking a "ms" in front of the word pacman still raises a smile.

I don't think this is about censorship at all. Make a game for "adults" where everyone is sexy as fuck and they're all nobbing and gobbling each other, no problem.

It's more about taking page three out of the family newspaper, taking that sort of thing out of big titles like call of duty or whatever where your nephews and nieces would be playing. Not having that insidious male gaze permeating the medium without challenge.

I was talking about VideoGamer... new member (since July) and he's already been banned once for sexism.

Sexy Parodius is one of the first things to come to mind at the start of the thread. But then it's, you know, a parody of the sort of thing cropping up in these other games. Intentionally obvious and silly about it.

As far as recall, anyway.

What was the reaction when Ms. Pac-Man was released? These days if you make a woman the main character (or make them wear appropriate clothing)* you are accused of going woke and it leads to incel review bombing. Was it deemed ok because she was presented like that picture?

I meant to quote this yesterday when I was dipping in and out of this thread to read replies whilst out and about. I had forgotten about Catherine. I played it on release, so like you my memory is slightly hazy, but I seem to remember there was a level of maturity to it. I can't remember how things played out in the end, but wasn't the story centered around Vincent's lack of commitment in his current relationship and each level was a test of his desires/morals? It felt like it was a game with a storyline written for adults and I enjoyed the story sections far more than the puzzle sections. Perhaps somebody who has played it more recently could comment on the level of fan service. I don't recall any gratuitous T&A but there was definitely some sexy scenes and possibly nudity.
