The original games were ok. This is just them sticking it in Frostbite and polishing it then At a later date using it as a platform for new games.

Im not interested even though I think finished all of them. They were the games that damaged my hands in 2011 so yeah…bot for me

It really doesn’t seem to be, it sounds like a ground-up remake with all-new assets:

I think there's some leeway to remake Dead Space, mainly in terms of cutting out some of the less interesting bits (like the asteroid shooting minigame) and tidying up the story. The original came along at a time when there was this idea that any game less than about 10hrs long was a complete waste of time, so loads of games from that era were padded out quite a bit. I remember Dead Space as being great, but also having long stretches in the middle where you're doing repetitive tasks in environments that don't vary a lot. I think you could tighten the game up quite a bit. Dead Space wasn't as madly overlong as Alien Isolation, but I think you could have a shorter game that was all killer reanimated corpses, no filler reanimated corpses.

Loved Dead Space, hell I loved the world design so much I finished each game to the last, even 3. It was one hell of a good looking game in 08, right off the bat when flying through space toward the Ishimura I knew the game was going to be top drawer. That was some film quality shit in 2008. It played as good as it looked.

As someone mentioned earlier, the game is still a looker today. I'm hoping they really go to town with the graphics technology/Frostbite because, on PC at least, the game still looks fairly current. Make my eyeballs bleed like the first did on my 360 and update the visuals enough to make this worthwhile. More importantly though, I hope any tinkering for the update keeps the stellar atmosphere that the OG game had in spades.

DS is definitely one of the most atmospheric Sci-Fi world creations ever seen in a videogame. Please don't fuck it up.

It's absolutely prime for a remake for the simple reason that it's probably the only route that leads to new 'Dead Space'. Obviously the Callisto Protocol is also carrying the torch for that dream too but I am more than happy to live in a future timeline where there's a new Dead Space AND a brand new IP from the creators of Dead Space that has been developed to try and fill that void too!

I only kind of vaguely remember those, weren’t they super low-grade compared to the rest of the game? Like someone grudgingly put it together with the assets they had lying around, or it was a mini-game someone had put together for a laugh that worked its way in by accident.

The was definitely a bit of, "we need a beat here, but we don't have time to polish it" about them.

I kind of worry about this. If this is a carbon copy of the original, why bother playing? Subjectively I'll get nothing out of it. I know the enemy placement, the surprises, the jump scares, whatever. I played the original to bits, love(d) it. I really hope they mix it up a lot. Mass Effect Remaster works because different classes and different party members guarantee new dialogue options, conversations and choices. Dead Space is linear to the extreme with no player choice. I see no sense in playing the exact same old horror game in 4k/60fps.

Isn't the rumour that it's more of  Resident Evil 2 style remake? Remake, not remaster.

Just watch the video I linked on the last page, they outline in detail what their plan is. Basically they will be taking some liberties with the design/story to improve things and try to incorporate elements like 'proper' no gravity from Dead Space 2. They will be remastering/remaking all the art assets and doing proper 3D audio, which is cool, and using SSD to eliminate loading times. It sounds like a Bluepoint style remaster with design tweaks and an presentation upgrade.

But what's very clear is they are big fans of the original and its a passion project, they've even got a committee of Dead Space fans they are using for feedback to keep them on the straight and narrow. They are clear they are going to maintain the atmosphere and tension. I still think its not a necessary remake but these guys certainly sound like the right fit and I'm optimistic about what they might come up with.

In my excitement I started playing the original again yesterday. It’s still as good as ever! Isaac moves like an old school resident evil character, the necromorphs are about as scary as Barney the dinosaur, but damn, the game is still fun as hell. Still looks really good, too!

Yea right - if Barney had an extra jaw growing out the side of his face full of razor teeth, two bony limbs with spikes on the ends shooting out his back and scuttled across the ceiling at 25mhp, then the Necromorphs are about as scary as Barney, sure.
