Dead Space Remake: Isaac is back, in Pog form!

This is so good.

I played the original loads of times. The little changes in the remake really do build on what was a great game to begin with.

The graphics are brilliant (I feel like pulling apart the fine details of specs, frame rates, etc is the most tedious thing to do ever... like, does it look good or not? Come on).

Little gameplay tweaks are working well so far. They've made it a little less linear. The atmosphere (particularly the power cuts where you have to rely on the light fixed to the weapon) is way more tense. I'm playing on standard difficulty... Is it me or are the monsters a little more resilient in this version?

After the abomination that was Callisto Protocol, I would have taken anything, but im really loving this, one or two hours in.

Edit: there's a good balance between jumpscare enemies bursting in, and really silent moments where they just sneakily show up behind you. Top stuff.

The updated lighting model is superb, those moments when the power cuts out are now pure dread.

I played through DS3 last year in co-op with a mate, it’s the weakest of the three but is actually very ambitious and holds up well. I was surprised to find the ice planet section doesn’t start until about halfway through the game, the first half involves you non-linearly exploring an abandoned flotilla of spaceships and is classic Dead Space (an expanded version of this was apparently the original pitch for the whole game).

The biggest issue is the unified ammo, caused by the (otherwise very clever) crafting system. It falls into the exact same trap that Deus Ex: Invisible War did; if you run out of ammo for one weapon, you run out of it for all of them. It doesn’t happen often because they throw almost constant ammo at you, but when it does it’s as aggravating as it sounds.

some optimised settings for the Steam Deck to get this running well

I’m still a bit confused, does it run on Steam OS or do you need to install windows to play it? Also, could he speak any faster in that video - I’m old

i need a step by step guide!

This is lovely on PC. Maxed out looks beautiful and runs like butter pretty much. Turned off DLSS because who needs it lel

What are your PC specs? It will give me an idea if it will run on mine well. Thanks.

It’s running on Steam - he’s using the gaming mode performance menu.

Probably not ones to base any sensible benchmark on

12600kf

32gb 3200 DDR4

RTX 4090

Playing on a 4k 120hz screen

Every time you post, my resolve to not get a 4090 takes a microscopically small chip of damage. I’m one stupid evening with an old fashioned in hand away from seeing an FE and unthinkingly buying it

that vid for Deck above is for Dead Space 2, dunno why they posted it now, the remake new version seems a bit rough on deck

Looks like it’s best to wait and see with this one but then, I’m sure I read somewhere that it ran well, I must be going mad.

Like I said in the nvidia thread, sure its an eye watering amount of money up front but nvidia cards hold value pretty well and each gen is 2 years.

So EVEN if I sold the 4090 for half what I paid for after two years to upgrade to the 5090 or whatever, thats £35 a month to have the best graphical and gaming experience available for consumers on all of planet earth.

Think about that. £35 a month to have the best in the whole world. I never even run msi afterburner to check what my FPS is anymore. I just hit settings to max and play. A pc gamer that doesn't do settings. That's me man. That's me.

That's fucking cheap for all that.

Its a great way of playing new EA games if you are on PC as it gets them day one.

Yep, it’s a shame it’s not on consoles too, I have the basic EA Play which is still great value and discounts 10% on new purchases, usually used on FIFA and F1. Have to be patient with releases though.

I put this on late last night. My specs are a bit more modest than Uzi's:

i9900k

2080ti

32gb RAM

I run it on ultra (no DLSS as noted in this thread) at 1440p at 120hz with VRR smoothing things out. I get the odd stutter but it looks and plays great.

The HDR on this game is good too, darkness is proper black, and the lights are very bright, most noticeable were the sparks flying about, which are super bright.

I almost noped out early on, but the game is just as compelling now as it was when I played the original. Had to force myself to go to bed.

Yeah the HDR is excellent. The contrast between the darkness and all the lights is fantastic. A showcase for good HDR, esp on PC!

Ah, ok, yeah, you would expect it to run well on that, but I suppose we are talking PC here.

I think that regardless of the difficulty level (Hard being the highest effective available at the start at least), going full Plasma Cutter is the optimal way to play these games. Do everything you can to get Nodes, pump up the cutter as much as possible, then flog off additional ammo (for which you'll have piles and piles) to finance suit nodes.

How's Isaac's chat? Eurogamer seemed to think it soured the experience.

It's completely fine. Anyone upset with it is blowing it out of proportion

I'd argue the chat is fine but it makes the lack of accompanying animation a bit jarring. He seems a bit static at times.

I know what you mean by this. It feels like there’s a lack of urgency during moments of action, and it seems to be a mix of the animation and the weapon feedback. Still enjoying it though!
