Is there a way to disable the screen backlight when docked? At the moment the screen goes black but with the backlight on. Presumably there’s an obvious setting I’m missing.

It's a bug apparently being worked on.  Workaround here:

-Plug in your dock while in game mode (as noted, the Steam OS menu/library screen will show on your monitor/tv and the Steam Deck screen will glow black); -Click the power button once to put the deck to sleep; -Wait 10 seconds; -Click the power button again to resume from sleep.

Upon doing this, the Steam Deck screen should remain off and your monitor/tv should show Steam OS. If you want to game in desktop mode (like most docked people do), you can click and hold the power button and use the Steam Deck controls to select the Desktop Mode menu option.

The best part of the Steam Deck is that you can even get brand new grandpa games!

I still haven't had a look at the Steam sale for some dank indie games - Neon White, Power Wash Simulator and HoloCure is gobbling up most of my gaming time on the handheld whenever I got the time this week.

I did get a neat cheap pair of bluetooth wireless buds for work travel purposes, but the latency is very noticeable on games like Streets of Rage 4 compared to the XBox Wireless Headset. Still, was able to play Neon White without getting thrown off and having that Machine Girl soundtrack blasting in my ears, so that's good.

Guys what was the name of that site that tells you how well something runs on the deck? I’ve gone back a few pages but can’t find it

https://sharedeck.games/

I'm not a fan, as it tells you what battery life you can get, but doesn't seem to give you a run=down on how to setup games/steam deck to hit 60-fps, 30fps, 40fps, etc

I find ProtonDB better for that, as often someone will share their settings to get a game a) looking good or b) running well.

It looks like you have a UK 64GB reservation

You reserved your deck 104 days, 19 hours, 09 minutes and 22 seconds after pre-orders opened

04 days, 14 hours, 42 minutes and 56 seconds of orders have been processed

You have 100 days, 04 hours, 26 minutes and 26 seconds of orders to go until it is your turn

You're 4.4 % of the way there!

Guess I'll see you in 2024

It looks like you have a UK 64GB reservation

You reserved your deck 345 days, 04 hours, 15 minutes and 54 seconds after pre-orders opened

04 days, 14 hours, 42 minutes and 56 seconds of orders have been processed

You have 340 days, 13 hours, 32 minutes and 58 seconds of orders to go until it is your turn

You're 1.33 % of the way there!

As Fry mentioned, the site assumes the same amount of orders are placed each day, but this is interesting to see that despite ordering over 200 days later you're not that much further ahead so hopefully things should be moving a little quicker once those first few days of orders have been fulfilled.

Valve are fulfilling orders on a first-come first-served basis, and there's a separate queue for each model and region.

You placed your order ~7 days after they became available. So far, they have processed UK orders for the 256GB model up to those who ordered ~3 hours after preorders began. The percentage indicates how far they've got from order #1 to your position in the queue, assuming a linear progression (which it won't be).

I get that but what exactly does 'processed' mean in this context?

Is it merely that my order has been checked and added to a queue?

Processed likely means people who have received the offer-to-buy email. They already have a queue dictated by the pre-order time. It reaches a point Valve think they have stock to fulfil an order, they mail people, a certain number buy, they remaining stock is rolled into the next batch of e-mails. And so on. As Valve appear to have ramped up production they can probably send out more e-mails in each batch. It's impossible to say what these predictors actually "mean" though as it's unlikely pre-ordering patterns have a linear decline, production will remain static or the uptake of people when offered the device will remain the same (in fact people who took longer to think may have a higher uptake). So it's a rough guide.

Is mine imminent?

It looks like you have a UK 512GB reservation

You reserved your deck 00 days, 01 hours, 53 minutes and 47 seconds after pre-orders opened

00 days, 01 hours, 25 minutes and 06 seconds of orders have been processed

You have 00 days, 00 hours, 28 minutes and 41 seconds of orders to go until it is your turn

You're 74.79 % of the way there!

Gamepass works fine. Quality isn’t quite there and you don’t get any haptics but overall it’s very impressive.

Today I learnt: Rumble is supported in XBox Cloud Gaming. Never even noticed, although that might be because I use it to check bullshit in games rather than actually getting a controller connected to my phone/tablet

Any word on Forza Horizon 4 running on this yet? That’s Forza Horizon 4, not Forza Horizon 5.

ProtonDB suggests it's pretty crashy.

Annoyingly, so is Red Dead Redemption 2 at present, which is a real shame as I was hoping to do a new playthrough on the Steam Deck. It's a real shame, as it runs surprisingly well, but when using the Vulkan API it has a habit of giving up the ghost and crashing out to SteamOS after around 30 mins. It doesn't crash at all if using the DX12 API, but renders water and snow effects so badly it makes the opening section basically unplayable. Even once that bit is done, you'll have trouble with rivers and lakes. It does go to show that sometimes the Steam rating system doesn't quite add up, as RDR2 is listed as 'Playable', whilst Batman: Arkham Knight and Elite Dangerous are listed as Unsupported and both run a treat on my Steam Deck.

Yep. SteamOS does state what version of Proton they tested with when you check the compatibility within the menu, but that doesn't stop any problems that can occur with either OS updates or, even more annoyingly, game updates from the developer side.

Case in point: Capcom. No game particularly in 2022, just Capcom routinely making their own games shit the bed.

Meanwhile, Tekken 7 works alright for an unsupported game.

Has anyone come across any good guides out there on how to remap or download custom control settings for mouse and keyboard focussed games?

I was having some issues with the left and right click flow on FTL.
