If anyone is interested or cares... I made a tutorial on how to get your DRM Free games onto the Steam Deck. Including touching on WinSCP and AnyDesk for easy control and management.

So now the dust has settled a bit which version of the steam deck is best to buy? The basic one is at a great price point but is the tiny storage space a problem? I’m sure I read that even games on the micro SD card run just as well?

 

The middle one may be the best option but if it’s trivial to upgrade the storage later anyways is it worth the price bump?

 

Finally the most expensive, is the anti glare coating worth it?

I have the 256gb, and I still feel justified in my purchase.

 

The biggest problem with the 64gb is the fact that multiple game installs can inflate with shader cache data and can stay on your system without poking into files every so often, and that isn't going to change with how Proton works. You can push that extra data onto the SD card as well though - and as you mention, for most games you'd want to play on the deck, the speed is negligible as long as you get a half-decent card.

 

I'm sure the 512 is alright, but every fucker has bought it, so the queue is a magnitude longer. That, and screen protectors fuck around with the anti-glare screen coating, which is one of the main reasons for buying the 512.

 

The 256gb meant I got mine in a reasonable timeframe (in comparison to others ordering the deck within the first ten minutes of pre-orders opening), I could slap on a tempered glass protector with no issue, and I've got the space to fuck around with dual booting without opening up the deck before the warranty is out.

 

Any of the models are fine out of the box, mind, and the issues pointed out are really nitpicking.

Mine was the first I've seen, and I've yet to see anyone else with one to compare, but my 256Gb model seems great, my switch runs of a 512Gb SD and I'll expect I'll do the same down the line. If only for emulators and countless Indies. That and the 256Gb, is plenty for anything that might benefit from any 'big game' that I'm currently playing (eg, the inevitable Elden ring run). I just tried out Metro (which runs great) and that's 70Gb, so it makes sense to me to go for 256Gb. But if I was going to swap models, I would save money and go for the 64Gb, before I bought the 512Gb.

I got the 64gb and upgraded the internal SSD to 256. It was super simple even for me. 

 

I also have a 1tb card for Steam, DRM free and Epic/GOG with a 512 for Emulation. 

 

My 256 internal is used purely for cache, app installs, etc and the odd game I want access to no matter what card is in. At the moment that is Grindstone

Don't say this stuff man even if it is casual and not serious, I know you have major sight issues but despite that you are clearly very smart and technically literate/capable - just read any page of this thread for evidence! I'm the kind of guy who blue screens Windows just by clicking the start button so would love to be as knowledgeable as you :lol:

As a 512 owner the screen is very lovely but because screen protectors could mess up with the anti glare etching I'm using it without one. Which gives me a fair amount of anxiety about scratching it. If I was going to go back in time I'd go for a 256. That size would be fine for the games I play on it.

Of course, that could all change if my son gets his hands on it, but then a screen protector there would be powerless in the face of his carnage.

The mark on my Vita OLED screen when I dropped it a single time makes me very sad.

 

very different materials covering the front, of course - the 512 should fare a bit better to scratches with the glass front.

 

It's all fairly moot, anyway - I bought the protector to prevent any damage before third parties got their shit together and started selling replacement screens, which is now happening - at least, with ifixit.

I have the 512GB one... and have already stuck a 512GB SD card in it to bring it up to 1TB. I do have Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 installed on mine though, and they're huge games.

 

I watched a video that showed the anti-glare screen was slightly softer than the smaller-capacity Steam Decks, but had better colour reproduction. The included case is a little bit nicer too. Probably not worth paying the extra for though, if you're happy to upgrade the internal SSD yourself down the line (or use large SD cards).

Makes sense , at least with wedging in a 2242 and the related pad removal - the power distribution part of the board, particularly the battery charging IC gets really hot, especially when playing a game and charging at the same time.

 

Removing any sort of thermal runaway is asking for that IC to go pop and fuck up the motherboard.

 

At the end of the day - use your loaf, replace like-for-like, and if you can't do that at least consider any power/thermal issues when attempting a bodge.

With regards to the 64GB vs Others. 

 

If all you will do it load up a card with 'Great on Deck' games, then knock yourself out. The 64gb is fine. It does overwrite where needed. As soon as you want to do anything else, you really need a 256gb. 

 

I installed Microsoft Edge Browser, EmuDeck* (this is all the emulators), Heroic Launcher and ProtonUp. On a 64gb SSD this will eat up loads of space along with the shader cache, etc. On a 256, you have plenmtyh of space left to play with should new shit come about. 

 

You can swap cards about as I do and you can technically move the shadercache and compatdata folders to the MicroSD also, but that can lead to issues when swapping cards. So easiee to keep those folders on the SSD. 

 

Plus it means if you have to reimage, there is less faffing around making sure all the folders are sorted again. 

 

*EmuDeck installs all the emulators on the SSD by default and this cannot at present be changed. But it does allow you to stote all the ROMs, BIOS ,etc on the MicroSD. I can't remember how it handles the cache stuff, but I thionk that is also on the SSD. 

 

So essentially... 

 

Console like experience out the box - 64 + MicroSd is fine
Any additional / tinkering - 256 + MicroSD is essential

Do it. I'd be surprised if I get an invite this year. I put my pre-order in at the end of October last year. All of the different calculators give me different times from July > 2023 before I get mine!
