is the 256gb the sweet spot, really want to get the 64gb to save money but not sure if this is a bad idea.

Not a huge diff in load speeds between ssd and micro sd card so no reason you can't get the 64gb and expand with micro sd for cheap

What happens if I want to install Windows later on etc?.  Will that still be possible?. I do have a 512GB microsd card but not sure and I don't want to order one and make a mistake.

I think you can only install windows on the micro sd anyway as it can't currently dual boot?

You can get both OSes on the SSD and sort of dual boot via the BIOS, but it does involve some jiggery-pokery - you basically use partitioning software to shrink the SteamOS portion, and then install Windows to the unallocated space.

But it's not as elegant as using something like GRUB, and if you're booting from the BIOS you might as well use Windows To Go on an SD card anyway.

As it's been confirmed that even the 64GB model has a replaceable drive, I would say the cheapest model is the smartest buy as it's only going to be natural that 2230 sized SSDs are going to be cheaper as time goes on. Then you can pay some IT bod to plop in a 1TB drive and save a packet, even if you're not willing to DIY it.

No updates from GLS or PF for 2 days now. GLS just says on way to final parcel centre, PF just says GLS has it. 😬

FYI, mine had the same thing, and it's updated overnight and is now in the UK depot closest to me. Hopefully that means a delivery on Monday - bit annoying as I have the time to pick it up while the depot's open and it's half an hour away, OTOH I need to be out tonight and I'd end up like this if I get it earlier:

Edit: Email arrived, delivery confirmed for Monday! I've directed them to the nearest post office, I need to do errands on the day in town anyway.

Tell you what’s hilarious,

Thinking that mine wasn’t coming until Monday, my Mother asked if I’d go and see Curtis Stigers with her tonight at my local theatre, and I said yes,

So my Steam Deck will be sat there at home, while I’m at the bloody theatre watching Curtis bloody Stigers.

Who on Earth is Curtis Stigers anyway!?

Do you know what time your order went though back when you pre-ordered it?

I am also in the 512 crew (Q2). I think we're going to have to wait a bit longer - the 512s seem to be shipping a lot slower....

Yeah, 512. My order time was 18:07:34. Looks like there's either limited 512 stock or just loads more orders in the UK. I saw a post from someone in the EU on Monday who got their mail with an order time of 18:40.

TBH, it's probably more the latter for the 512. Pure conjecture incoming - I reserved the 256 as I thought the cheapest and most expensive models would be snapped up in larger quantities, and as a result have longer reservation queues. That, and I wanted to guarantee I had a model that had an SSD in the hopes it was swappable, because everything I've owned with eMMC storage was always soldered to the board. Thankfully, Valve didn't end up cutting corners that much.

Very excited to see this in the hands of more forumites. Hopefully not long until we get to see what this lad can do. Like this:

Getting harder and harder to resist putting a pre-order in for one of these.

It’s only a fiver for the deposit and I strongly suspect you’ll have plenty of time to change your mind.

So dooooo ittttttt

Not sure I fully understand how the Proton Experimental stuff works. A fair few questions:

  • Do I need to install Experimental at a system level, or run it on a per-game basis?
  • Do games tell you that they will run better on Experimental, or is it a community advice thing?
  • Is it obvious where Experimental is and how to use it, when in the main gaming (non-desktop) mode?
  • Is the current version of Proton on the shipped device the latest, or is there a newer build it will auto-install on first login/registration?
  • For the stutter-free version of Elden Ring, so I need to install Experimental, or does the latest version of Proton have the Elden Ring fixes built into it?

Thanks.

To answer @jonamok's queries:

- You can set a 'default' version of Proton for all your games, which is usually the latest stable version by default. You can then set each game to boot with a specific version of Proton in the launch options.

- Generally, setting a specific version is through community advice, yes. Generally, you shouldn't need to unless you're having problems.

- Yes, it's fairly clear where it is, it's part of the interface when you select a game and it's in the system settings for the 'default' Proton version.

- My assumption is that it will be part of the update system SteamOS (well, the Steam binary specifically) has going on. Proton itself is being worked on at a rapid pace, so it's likely never going to have a 'latest' version on it. If you do select a Proton version that's newer or older, it will download it for you and pre-configure before it starts the game.

- As for Elden Ring, I wouldn't know myself. Having a quick look on YouTube suggests it's via Experimental, but at the same time a new Proton stable version might have been committed since then. I would personally slap it on Experimental from the off and see how it goes. I'd imagine the stuttering stuff will be mostly eradicated anyway from everyone else generating pre-cached shader data, anyway.

Are these relatively easy to sell on if I don't end up thinking it's worth it? There's nothing locking your Deck into your Steam account, or anything like that? I've got a 512GB model ordered, but £550, or whatever it is, ain't cheap.
