reading the discussions on Steam the loader looks an issue on Deck with many reporting they couldn't get it loaded, some saying it was fine.

worth a punt I guess with the refund available

Depends on the time frame of those reports - there was a period that pretty much all EA games didn't work after they changed from Origin to their new EA App.

As long as you use Proton Experimental, EA games should be fine. I'd find out myself, but most of my storage space is occupied and I can't be arsed buying a fourth SD card!

pretty recent, back in Dec

just a heads up in case anybody tempted as it's a big install I'd guess and could be faff.

Seems to be a mini Steam sale on today, been going through it but not much has caught my eye. Think I need another isometric racer to play. Any suggestions?

Of course.

For those new to PC gaming the now ignored Steam thread (this being the latest PC gaming megathread) title always being "Steam - There's a sale on" was not a joke. There is always a sale. It can be a big one of a few weeks. It can be a little mini event one tied to a cultural or gaming event. It can just be midweek madness. Or a publisher specific sale. And often, there's actually more than one sale on.

I've had Titanfall 2 lurking in my steam library since the last time it was criminally cheap, waiting for me to get a pc capable of it. It runs really well on the deck with no fiddling. I'm playing docked on keyboard+mouse, so the only issue I had with the EA sign-up was it finding my name objectionable. The sign-up is a one-time thing though.

On the subject of shooter sales Max Payne 3 is 70% off and available for a smidge over a fiver, seems in that sweet spot era that will run really well on this being over a decade old.

Never played one in the series before so may take a punt, not especially into shooters though and now always thinking of games not in terms of cost but more the space they take up !

It's not £8 for Titanfall 2 and MP3, its probably a third of my available storage !

No matter what I do Euro Truck is a jaggy mess.

Hard to play like that. Have anti aliasing at highest and it still sucks.

So, for me, I have Proton Experimental set as the compatibility layer, and then just choose "Play Euro Truck Simulator 2" from the menu that appears when you launch the game. I've never tried the DX11 version - the regular one runs well enough for me.

In the in-game options, I've got it in Fullscreen Mode, 1280x800 resolution, Default refresh, Vertical synchronisation Enabled, and Simple Graphical Setting at Ultra. I've not changed any options beyond that.

In the Steam Deck's Performance menu, I've got "Use per-game profile" turned on, Framerate limit set to 40, Refresh Rate set to 40, Allow Tearing set to Off, Half Rate Shading set to Off (make sure this is Off!), TDP Limit Off and Manual GPU Clock Control Off.

I get a solid 40 FPS and it looks great!

Make absolutely certain you've got Half Rate Shading set to Off. This is basically an emergency setting to get the frame rate up in some games and it'll make ETS2 look absolutely shit.

Max Payne 3 is a firm recommend from me - it's more like a Tony Scott movie than the Wachowski stylings of the first two, and wasn't made by Remedy, but it's a fun romp in its own right and well suited to the controller, which the first two are not at all.

Yep, I had to remove my glass screen protector last night after one of the recent updates. It was perfectly fine up until then, you wouldn’t notice it was on.

They must have tweaked something pretty big because it made it super sensitive in some places (you couldn’t scroll without tapping into things accidentally), and yet the keyboard was still as shitty as before. Removed it and both are now fine.

Did all this and it's still full of jaggies.

Suppose it's just the way it is.

Kena Bridge Of Spirits is half price £15.99, anyone played it?

If you're asking for Steam Deck performance or format then people can maybe comment (or ProtonDb)

But otherwise, thread:

I have it and my brief time with it was great. Straight out of the box too.

It was excellent on PS5. It might be another one to consider playing on the big screen, it’s a real looker.

You don't have half rate shaders turned on do you?

Nope. Have everything off that limits performance. Im having this issue in a few games and just assume its because of the low resolution screen. But its only in 3d games.

Try installing the ShareDecky plugin on DeckyLoader and try some of the settings others have used

Yeah, without knowing where Ry draws the line, we can't say if anything will actually improve matters. For all we know, he's only driven around a bit of Scotland, and the whole of Britain looks like shit in the game no matter what you do.

It’s gonna cost me this Steam Deck as I keep double dipping. If Last Of Us and Returnal run well I’ll definitely be buying those again 😬

Maybe someone who thinks it looks fine posts a screenshot. The Ry can say whether that's what his looks like and it's ass.

This isn't exactly Digital Foundry, but he's a photo of the game running on my Steam Deck taken from my phone.

It's a 1280x800 screen, so there is some slight jagginess simply because it's not a high resolution screen. I can't say it's enough to bother me though.

Thanks to you bunch of bastards, I downloaded ETS2 to my deck after playing maybe.. 30 or so minutes of being confused about it on PC. After a couple of hours on it, I pretty much have gotten the grasp of it with the basic bitch automatic transmission and not having a clue about proper parking. All I wanted to do was see if it looked like shit.

Oh no. OH NO. IT'S POWER WASH SIMULATOR AGAIN.

Its awesome, I clocked 50 hours this week and can't stop playing! I really struggled with the parking and reversing but I've noticed now I have the feeling right down and can do all sorts of crazy things. It just clicked for me after messing about here and there. When you get to a park up look at the map it offers on each option and just have a play around then get spinning them wheels!

Yeah, I do the second option, it's perfectly do-able while I figure out the right camera/method for reversing. I think using the free cam and anticipating the cab to move the trailer the right way is fucking it up.

Although I also got fucked up when they started me in the yard the wrong way around and had to do a three point turn

Actual killer app, what the fuck. I'm amazed it hasn't been ported yet.

I've never even heard of Nail'd, a 2010 Pure like quad off roader. Handling not quite as solid as Pure but you get the idea.

Needs couple of tweaks to run perfectly but I found the latest Proton GE removes all artefacts and can set everything to high.

The grunge soundtrack may need to go off but I'm getting strong XFM retro vibes from it, lots of time spent in the air and got that weird go-pro look which i got used to quickly.

89p of fun all day long though, super fluid crazy handling, it's like split/second does quads.

Done a few races and it's fucking brilliant, leave the music on it adds to the atmosphere !

Massively OTT courses with less of a trick focus than Pure, and dare I say it I think I'm going to like it more, it's so fast and fluid and Split/Second Excite Truck OTT.

For racers of that era the Deck is just fantastic.

As soon as you get it installed first thing to do is set the controller in the game settings to xbox360 form the default of mouse/keyb, then max the graphics (will need a restart) then take to the air !
