Has anyone else had issues with Decky Loader? Mine has stopped showing up at all on my system. I've tried my deck in both main and beta versions.

Mine disappeared last week, so I reinstalled it.

What’s Decky Loader, and do I need it? I’ve installed my games so far on the SD card and I’m impressed how quickly they load.

This machine is great and does exactly what I was hoping for, allows me to play console quality games whilst bumming around in the settee. The speakers are surprisingly good quality too, didn’t expect that from a handheld.

I might try and set up the dock later, is it relatively straightforward?

Is this free to install ?

No, it's a paid game - There is a free demo, though. And if you want thousands of hours of gameplay without spending money, there's always Apex and Path of Exile!

There's also some free games here, although most of the free selection needs you to get handsy with adding non-Steam games to Steam.

It allows you to install third-party plugins for use in Gaming Mode. It's worth installing - the plugins I use most are 'vibrantDeck', which allows you to tweak colour saturation on the LCD screen and make it a little more OLED-like; 'ProtonDB Badges', which shows the ProtonDB rank for every game in your library and gives you a quick link to their ProtonDB page; 'HTLB for Deck', which shows you the How Long To Beat stats for each game in your library and 'Animation Changer', which allows you to easily change your startup and suspend animations.

That sounds interesting, particularly vibrant deck. Got to be honest I am a tad disappointed with the screen - it’s fine, but every display I use these days is OLED and the difference is quite noticeable imo,

I really really need to stop buying games and start playing some instead

This is the part where all the new deck owners start playing some PC bullshit that sucks them in for a billion hours.

I've got my popcorn ready (and a side order of Civ V)

In other news: played some Mothmen 1966 over lunch. Great visual style for a creepy horror story game, really pops on the screen with VibrantDeck.

Also, DroidX seem to be stocking 1TB 2230 SSDs from some Shenzhen company (KingSpec). £140 is a pretty good price, but I'm probably going to wait until the Sabrent Rocket drives are back in stock, IIRC they're only about a tenner more.

There is the specs, do you reckon it could run on minimum settings at 720p 60?

A solid 60 is essential for Returnal, I mean there’s no option to play it any other way on PS5.

If it runs on Steam Deck then that will be amazing. It’s the best game this generation so far.

You can also force FSR if needed and run at an even lower resolution.

Having already clocked it on PS5 I guess I’d like to see it running on steam deck but they’d have to make some big compromises.

Apparently it ran on PS5 at 1080p with some very good upscaling on top, so the deck’s lower resolution isn’t as much an advantage. Maybe. I’m a bit out of my depth here.

You’d lose out on dual sense features too, which are great in returnal. I mean, you could plug a PS5 controller in probably but then it’s kind of missing the point. I’m assuming the deck can’t use 3D audio like a PS5, either.

Broadly, the GPU is roughly equivalent to a 1050 apparently though the way it (the deck) works makes direct comparisons tricky.

It’s possible that they’ll do some extra optimisation or even Valve will step in to do a a small OS change/addition (like they did with Elden Ring, RDR2 and probably others) as it’s a pretty prestige release.

What I’m really saying is that I have no idea.

I wouldn’t pick it up on release but I’d love to know the deck could manage it so I could buy it in a sale or something. I haven’t managed to get uncharted at even a reasonably steady 60 even on the lowest settings so let’s see.

PS5 console exclusive “Jett The Far Shore” is coming to steam and there’s a demo up on the store which runs on steam deck.

Initially I thought it ran quite well which wasn’t surprising given how bland it looked. Then I realised it had defaulted to the lowest graphics setting so put it up and the frame rate tanked. The higher graphics settings still look pretty bland so presumably this is not very optimised because I’m not seeing anything that looks particularly taxing for the hardware. It reminded me of The Pathless which also struggles to hit 60 on much more than minimum despite also not looking particularly taxing.

Anyway, it’s from Superbrothers who made the overly pretentious, chin scratching  bollocks sword and sorcery for iOS, which I had to bin because of how smug and self involved the writing was. I’d like to say this isn’t more of the same but it kind of is.

They’ve taken a great idea (a mysterious humanoid alien race travels across the stars looking for, I don’t know, a new home or something), twinned it with an incredible soundtrack (M83 fans will enjoy) and then decided to create the most basic game possible around it. They’ve also taken the time to make their own language for said aliens that is spoken very slowly with all the emotion and enthusiasm of a badger ODing on ketamine. There’s no real reason I can think of to create this language, it’s not like the burble burble burble they use in Nintendo games to save on voice casting. It’s got nouns and adjectives and tenses and everything. That’s almost quite cool if it didn’t sound so shit,

The thing that annoyed me the greatest was despite hating it most of the way through, the demo ends in an incredibly epic way and I almost wanted to see more but hopefully the soundtrack is streaming somewhere instead.

Anyway, enjoy!

Tunic looks and plays bloody amazing on this little device, the lighting and everything, it’s all there.

What does TDP do in the settings? It says it limits power usage but I’ve put it right down and the game still runs the same
