Brilliant, I have wanted this for ages on a handheld. So when you say quit manually is there like the equivalent of the Xbox and PS home buttons which you use to go back to the dashboard and then manually select and quit the game from there? Thanks for reporting back btw :)

I am so excited for the Steamdeck to

arrive now :omg:

exactly that, you tap a dedicated 'steam' button and then 'exit game', no funny 5 key combos to hold and do a reset for this issue.

as said a couple of the older games load and play great but do hang occasionally (or always in this case) on exit.

Now the dreaded question, screen protector or no screen protector?

I haven’t even got mine yet and I’ve already bought:-

512gb SD card

Bluetooth keyboard and mouse

A dock & HDMI lead

At least it comes with a case so that’s something I don’t have to consider!

I guess it depends on how you'll be using the thing? If you'll be taking it out and about with you then I'd imagine a protector would be a good call, but if you're just using the thing at home, then no real point really.

Beach Invasion 1944 is a nice little gallery shooter that’s ideal on the Deck. It’s basically a modern remake of Beachhead from the Speccy. Looks good, plays great, and it’s about 7 quid at the moment.

Edit - ymmv on the tastelessness of playing a game based on manning German guns on the beaches of Normandy, of course.

I had the Jseux protector on mine and I couldn't figure out why the patch to fix the touch screen very early on didn't work. Turns out the screen protector was stopping my touch screen from working properly. I'd never had that with a screen protector before so mine is commando now.

What are you protecting it from?

Nothing, the hazards of internet shopping and FOMO.

I use one on my phone because it’s in use all day long, in my pocket, etc. this should be fine as when it’s not in use it will be docked or in its case, and unlike the various Switch’s we own, this one is mine, no one else can touch it

I put a screen protector on mine as there was no screen replacements available at the time and I lug mine everywhere.

With iFixIt having readily available stock after the initial surge of orders, I'd probably not bother.

I always put screen protectors on any mobile device with a screen. You just never know! I also have a 4 year old tearing around the house all the time so there's that.

Also good to include in the listing when said device turns up in the trading thread eventually.

Just had an hour on Kartrider Drift - it's a free-to-play fully cross platform kart racer that has quite big plans, seen it pushed on xbox in the store too but don't think out on that yet.

Monetisation is claimed to all be cosmetic taking the season pass approach to unlock more stuff, with nothing that lets you win or be powered up locked behind a paywall.

Need to change Proton to get it to launch I believe, I used GE, and first load is a bit finicky as have to create an account (i had to uncheck email me updates to let me check I agree to the terms of service) but after that game loads and runs ok. Seeing a few stutters online, not sure if this compatibility or shaders. Handling seems OK, bit slow no rumble, there is also quite an extensive looking single player licence list to unlock a load of cosmetics.

Free to play and has potential.

I’ve just been playing the 2 hour free trial of The Last Of Us Pt 1 on PS5, and I was disappointed when it ended tbh, still an amazing game. Checked on Steam to see it’s coming out on PC very soon, in March in fact, and it will run on Steam Deck according to Naughty Dog. The thought of playing it in bed with the lights off, headphones on, has me salivating.

Hopefully I’ll be able to pick it up for less than £69.99 though :o

Edit. It’s £49.99 on PC, the absolute cheek of Sony

Given that TLOU part 1 won’t run* on a PS4 I’d expect some heavy compromises for the steam deck version.

*maybe it can and they just didn’t bother because the changes weren’t enough of a step up from remastered.

cpu on the deck is significantly stronger than the PS4 and the res at 720p should make it viable at lower settings

Yeah, I’m sure it will run but as much as I like (and often prefer) playing games handheld I think it’s going to look pretty bad in comparison compared to say, Spider Man and Uncharted (which both have frame rate blips unless you cut a lot back anyway).

On the subject here’s a reminder that Horizon Zero Dawn runs like a dog on steam deck and doesn’t deserve a verified mark.

If you have a look on its page on the Deck it should let you mark the experience from verification. Make sure it says it doesn't work.

I did that! I initially confirmed it as verified because it runs very well to start with, especially those underground cave sections. Then you hit the open world and it goes to shit.

There are plenty of games that run better on deck than on PS4. It's probably roughly similar in terms of raw power but much more efficient than the shitty CPUs that were in the last gen consoles.

So last of us will probably be playable at least.

I’m not expecting it to look like a high end desktop PC or PS5 game, but 30fps with some cutbacks will be fine. The guts of it are a PS3 game after all. It will go on PS+ at some point, but until then I quite fancy a handheld version.

Talking of Horizon wasn’t that considered to be a bad port anyway for PC?

AFAIK It’s a ground up remake using a different engine so as much as there’s a PS3 version of the game, it isn’t using any of it (unless you count the mo cap work, which I don’t).

I’m sure they’ll get it running on the deck (and I’m interested in seeing it) but, for me at least, the appeal of part 1 was the mega graphics, which really are mega. And the 3D audio stuff which is also a real game changer.

I believe Horizon was ballsed up at launch but got fixed up. I’m not sure why it runs so poor considering you can have death stranding using the same engine looking pretty lovely.

Yeah I think they improved the AI as well, but my reference to it being a PS3 game at heart was really just thinking about the level design. When you think of stuff like Control, that’s way more advanced, and runs OK from what I’ve heard.

Are Naughty Dog handling the port themselves?
