Steam Deck (handheld from Valve) - shipping is 4-8 days from NL to UK

My first steam sale has tipped me over into confidently declaring the Deck to be my favourite games machine EVER.

Nothing comes close in the last 20y or so and I was probably as excited about getting a ZX Spectrum back in the early 80s but I wouldn't swap a Deck for one now.

I've spent less than £25 and got multiple great looking games to have a dabble with.

Latest is 2d mysterious platformer called Elechead, even working out how to start the game took me a while but starting to get to grips with it's internal logic and just got thru the first world, level 2 opening is really elegant, very clever minimalist design going on here.

Yeah, the Deck is ridiculous just on the basis that, well, it's a PC in a neat little package. And PC's the place to be if you want cheap and/or obscure games that are neat.

I mean, I just played the restoration of the original Duke Nukem Forever on it. That's pretty cool.

Anyway: I finally bothered installing Decky Loader. Pumped the contrast a little bit with VibrantDeck, installed How Long To Beat and ProtonDB plugins, and used SteamGridDB to sort out DNF and Thatcher's Techbase.

Yeah, Decky Loader is fucking rad. It's so god damn handy just to use those things without checking websites or desktop mode, ESPECIALLY SteamGridDB because SGDBoop got fucked over by SteamOS, which was already miles faster than doing that shit via Steam itself.

Astlibra Revision is slightly confusing, has that Japanese Indie jankiness factor, but really good.

Yeah, I'm hoping to pick it up when it's actually Christmas. I really enjoyed what I played of the demo.

I kept umming and ahhing over Mothmen 1966, but I'll play the demo first - it's cheap enough anyway, and I should see if there's more to it than the (incredibly cool) aesthetic.

Oh! I didn’t realise Elechead was out, it looked great from the trailers.

apparently it's pretty short at only 2-3h to complete but at the sale price I won't be too cross at that if it maintains the standard at the current level I've seen.

Gamemode works fine for me but in desktop mode I’m unable to open the keyboard using steam+x nor can I open Steam. Any help?

First off, when you say 'open Steam', do you mean the overlay, or the Steam program itself?

If you mean the latter, that'll explain your former question - the Deck's more complex controls are tied to having the Steam program open in desktop mode. If it's closed, it will default to a dumb mode where most of the macro stuff (like the show keyboard button combo) will not work.

To open it up, you just need to open it like any Windows desktop - click the start button, find Steam and click on it. If it's off, your controls will default to mouse movement on the right touch pad and left mouse click on the right trigger.

I literally couldn’t open the keyboard or Steam in desktop mode at all. I had rebooted the deck a few times trying to do the old “turn it on and off again” trick to no avail. Forced closed steam a few times and no luck… so gave up and just switched back to gamemode, played Noita, and resigned myself to a dodgy Desktop mode.

It’s only after reading your post and turning the deck on again that it miraculously went back to normal. So no idea what the issue was but all is good now. Perhaps a Christmas miracle?

Steam Deck is proving to be worth its weight in gold this Christmas. Have been playing FFXIV from the comfort of the sofa while my parents watch repeats of Midsomer Murders for the hundredth time.

Combined with my Aeropex headphones I’ve been able to enjoy some quality gaming whilst still being able to be part of the conversations.

I’m in heaven! Pass the chocolates!

Elechead is quite brilliant, such clean clever design and a perfect example of taking a game mechanic and just building and building on it.

One of the best games I played in ages, don’t dismiss it just cos of the simple pixel graphics.

Probably only 3h to finish but loving every minute and over halfway and not needed to resort to looking anything up yet.

Is there any way for my daughter and I to share our steam libraries on two decks? I can see family sharing but that suggests it’s multiple accounts on one deck rather than the Xbox family share approach.

I’ve read if you share only one user can play the same game at the same time which suggests there should be a way of sharing over multiple devices?

Damn, Tetris Effect is lovely on this thing. I had the PC version via game pass, but running it with everything on max sounded like a jet turbine.

I also appreciate having a deck while sat in front of Christmas telly

Anyone finding more issues with 3.4?

since installing it I’d say about 50% of the time a game won’t fully quit or start up.

very annoying.

I’ve been noticing a lot of hanging when starting FFXIV. Thought it might just be the launcher I’m using but maybe 3.4 is the cause….

Can't say I've noticed anything different but when that does a happen a quick reboot usually solves everything.

Yeah it does, but I'm finding that It's happening on about 25% of opens and about 50% quits. Seen a couple of other posts on reddit where people are noticing an increase too.

Family sharing works on multiple devices but you can only play one game full stop on any device per Steam account (ie if I’m playing Destiny 2 on Steam my son can’t play anything at all).

Its more to allow different users to have their own save data for a game on other devices then any form of library sharing solution.
