If I use Heroic Launcher would the games perform worst than say Steam counterparts?.

It will vary from game to game. Nothing to do with the Heroic Launcher directly and to do with what the builds of the games being run by either Steam or Heroic are.

It can also vary from within Steam. Steam might have a native Linux version of the game that it wants to use by default (because the Steam Deck is running Linux) but maybe the Windows version under Proton will actually perform better.

So you might be comparing:

  • Linux version in Steam
  • Windows version in Steam running with Proton
  • Windows version in A.N. Other Launcher (via Heroic) under some compatibility solution (I'm assuming Heroic applies Proton but I've not actually checked)

As always, search out people's opinion on specific titles. ProtonDb is a good starting point at least for the Steam under Proton support.

Thanks for the reply that was very helpful. Since my net is slow I don't wish to download 30+ gigs for a game to find out it doesn't run well.  Also thank you for the link, first time I heard of Protondb.

Just ordered one along with the dock :)

Been feeling pretty disillusioned with gaming of late; the PS4 has been unplugged for nearly a month, but looking through the store recently realised there's so much good stuff I've missed out on over the years and this feels like the perfect way to address that, and that's before considering the retro element! Really feels like a second wind.

I've gone with the 64gig version as I'm comfortable opening it up if need be but I reckon should be ok anyway.  For the SD card this came up as a recommend more than once but any thoughts would be welcome.

Apologies as I'm sure this has been asked loads but I'm now looking for a cheap Bluetooth keyboard/mouse as it will spend most of its time docked and I will spend most of my time on the sofa.  It seems every site recommends something different and often pricey - would something like this be reasonable?  I'd (hopefully) be using the PS4's dualshock most of the time anyway so doesn't feel like I need anything too wild.

Hurrah! Just arrived - so 4 days - nice.  Admittedly it was delivered to the wrong address half a mile away, thankfully the person was honest/kind enough to bring it round.  No docking station either so hoping that's coming separately...  I didn't get any shipping email/tracking message in those 4 days dunno if that's normal...

Yeah, that's normal. That's why someone changed the title of the thread.

Anyway, more of a general Steam thing, but:

Spoiler

Quick straw poll for something that intrigues me:

At the end of the night. Do you shut down? Or do you sleep your Deck?

Sleep.

After reading it a story and tucking it in, of course

What was the bug?

Gotters posted on the previous page. One of the bugs was menus not scaling properly on 4K TVs. I’m assuming that’s the bug that impacts me. I get correct display on my small old TV but on my 4K Imita zoomed in so I only get the top left of what I should see.

Just for the sake of it, got Windows 10 up and running from a 128Gb SD Card following this video. No dual boot but something else for me to mess around with lol

How does it run?, I'm tempted to do this myself if the performance is decent. However, from reading thought Win updates causes issues?.

Off topic, downloaded Cyberpunk. Using the default steam deck profile and I'm impressed. I have a rig which I use for 3D work which I could use to play this. But there's something cool just sitting in bed playing Cyberpunk. I'm warming towards the deck, I spent more time tinkering and downloading than playing. It's obvious too, but getting a deck is a no brainer if you're steam library is big. Sadly my collection is fragmented from Itch.IO, Epic, etc that work arounds is the only way.

My own experience was that performance was.. fine, but the amount of faff required to just get Windows to see the Steam Deck controls without Steam, controlling the TDP/fans and telling Windows not to thrash the SD card to death is a load of bollocks.

I think the former two can be fixed if someone bothered to make something like Aya Space for the deck, but nobody can be arsed. So, uh, great I guess.

FYI, cheap game fans: according to gg.deals, Indie Gala are selling a load of Bethesda games for dirt cheap, and Voidu are selling a load of anime games for dirt cheap with the BUY30 code.

As someone with a reasonable amount of experience of PC building and installing cooling solutions (including custom building my own loop): take that video with a large pinch of salt. Graphite pads are fine, and have their uses (particularly if you're e.g. swapping coolers in a system regularly), and I'm not surprised they're slightly more performant than the stock solution, but they're notably more expensive and less effective than any mid-range+ thermal paste.

Basically, if you're really wanting to eke out better temperatures/fan speeds from your Steam Deck, and are comfortable enough to open up your Steam Deck and reinstall the cooler, just get yourself some decent* thermal paste and use that instead. Just as risk-free as the graphite pad, will take about 30 seconds more to apply (and no need to cut it down to size), and will give you a more effective solution for less cost.

(and don't expect miracles — unless you've the misfortune to have a particularly badly installed heatsink in the first place, changing to a better thermal interface is only ever going to give you marginal gains — the cooler itself is always going to be the major limiting factor here)

Typical - I picked that card up yesterday at full price, was so eager to sort out memory and a keyboard/mouse didn't ever occur to me to wait argh! 🤔

E-mail Amazon, they'll probably honour it and refund you the difference if you bought it there.

Sadly that's as far as I got as I had to deal with some family issues. Might be a while before I even get back to my Deck
