yakumo
question how does warranty work if you buy an used deck?
Strafe
4 hours ago, Siri said: Oh, I didn't mean the in-game settings - SteamOS has a thing under each game (like the compatibility tab to change proton versions) that lets you force the game to see the deck at x resolution, instead of the game just detecting the resolutions that the handheld LCD can run at. Edit: and PiP means Picture in Picture. These sorts of monitors have a mode to divide the space so you can at least have the deck running on one part of the screen and the other showing another device's output, instead of just a whole load of nothing. Pumped up the in the properties but still no joy.

sbrandon111
Dishonoured looks and plays amazing on the deck. I never properly got in to it when it came out ages so but I’m absolutely loving it in the Deck. What a great little machine it is.

Seems to hit a solid 60 at 1080p, 40 at 1440p, and then highly cinematic framerates at 4k. I'm not sure it's a game I could ever play on a handheld, I think I'd just feel a bit too claustrophobic. But then again I don't have to. I think until I get a desktop PC sorted, there are some games I'm going to prefer to play on a larger external screen. Its via the ubisoft launcher so direct and using proton 6.21-GE-2 to launch, erm, the launcher. And I checked, it will only launch from desktop mode (linux). g wings
I'm way behind on my knowledge so it was only after reading a couple of posts here that I realised you could access Xbox Cloud Gaming. Couldn't quite believe how easy it was to access and how well it plays. Just had half an hour on FH5 and it was very impressive. This machine 😍

Siri
Yeah, unless you're an international customer who absolutely has to get a Steam Deck right now instead of a GPD or a Aya, and has to buy from a third party because Valve's rollout is slow as molasses, there's absolutely no need to buy anywhere other than Valve themselves now. Everything else is just overpriced in comparison.
Gotters
I just saw that Ayaneo2 on youtube, pricey https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/ayaneo-2-completely-different-amd-6800u-handheld#/
deerokus
The Aya devices are on paper very nice, but Valve's combination of performance and pricing has completely blown all the small companies that make handheld pcs out of the water to the extent I don't see the point of buying any of the other ones unless you really have to have a better screen. Opinionated Ham Scarecrow
The Aya may not outperform the deck, but running native windows, having an oled screen and being about 7.2 times better looking still makes it a good option depending on what you intend to be playing on it.
Siri
I also think the early bird pricing is a reasonable option if you're in a well-off part of the world that for some reason can't buy a Steam Deck, like Australia. I mean, it's great that I'm not in Australia and that's why there's a Deck next to me while I'm laying here with a food baby, but I wouldn't be sniffy about it if someone bought one due to lack of options. Having recently got an Odin Lite (I know it’s not going against the deck, but the points should still stand) there are a couple of things Valve really have going for it. Not even the price to performance which nothing in the market can match yet. 1) Ease of use. Get a new Deck, sign in to steam account, install your games, done. The user experience from minute one is light years ahead of absolutely everything. It either just works or someone has worked out how to make it work. Which brings us to the next point. 2) Support. Unlike a lot of these other companies with too many SKUs, all the Decks perform the same, the innards are the same. It’s a standard, and so many people have the standard that info is everywhere. There is no scrambling around in Discord or Reddit to find how to do some weird thing. So many people have the Deck you will almost certainly find what you are after. Look at the size of this thread for a start. If you have never dabbled in other portable stuff you won’t realise how much of a plus point that is. Having a decent collection at this point the deck has so many advantages over most other handhelds. Yes, it is probably too big. The battery is only okay and the screen isn’t the best. Do I have to faf about learning how to make Windows work? Am I installing lots of Android emulators and setting them up individually? Hell no, you put EmuDeck on it, install Outrun 2006 PC (which seems have amazing power efficiency for some reason) and never use anything else. Unless you are a maniac like me and want something that actually fits in your pocket and still likes the Odin experience. But I’m sure some people in this thread know I’m a giant idiot anyway.
bradigor
I want all the handheld systems. I love handhelds. Unfortunately I can never afford them. But from my limited experience with others, the Steam Deck is, as you say, light-years ahead in the most important areas.
alex3d
Managed to get Driver: SF running on SD. Runs great, good game. Big, big FU at Ubisoft though.
Gotters
I saw something mentioned on a YouTube vid the other day that one of the biggest things the deck has going for it now against all the other handhelds is the scale of the user base & community, you're rarely the first person to have an issue so there is a large and growing body of reddits and forums with all sorts of solutions to problems. As is evidenced here with our threads. That scale of users all on the same hardware will also bring all manner of emulation and enthusiast software to be created. Whilst I'm sure that Aya is an incredible bit of kit it will not gather that scale of audience and enthusiast support.
bradigor
@Trebleand I mentioned this in the podcast this week. It feels like the emulation community has been reinvigorated this year on the back of the Steam Deck.
denisb
As someone who has never once played their switch handheld is it worth me getting one of these?
