Mine neither :) No, you're right. Just a bit unpleasant when playing and pausing an Xbox Cloud game. Usually I need to quit and restart the application for it to connect and work again.

It's because the deck is just a pc in a console form factor. So when you turn it into the suspend mode it's actually off. The consoles have extra gubbins that let you stay connected when in a low power mode.

Noob question : i have the 64gb steam deck. Am i correct in thinking that it has eMMC memory and an empty M.2 slot? So i can just buy a 512 M.2 and put it in without worrying about reinstalling the OS etc?

I don’t think so. I think it uses the same slot so you’ll have to reinstall the OS using a USB drive/dock

Ah ok, thanks. Not sure I can be bothered with the hassle. I don’t want to risk bricking it or setting it all

up again.

It's piss easy. I did it and I am blind and cack handed

It's the same slot but it's a doddle to switch over and reinstall the OS. I ordered the 512GB SK Hynix for £65 on eBay - took 2 weeks or so to arrive from China but no customs charges and it's been working great.

Did you have to reinstall and set everything up again like the proton stuff or an I overthinking it 🤣

I ordered the drive at the same time as my deck so just wiped the microSD too and started over. I think you could keep game data on your microSD to save redownloading, but I'm not 100% sure.

I presume I’ll need a usb a to c adapter as well?

Yeah I used a USB-C SD card reader I had and put the OS install files on a full size SD.

I followed this guide to install the epic games launcher

https://gamerant.com/how-to-install-epic-games-launcher-on-steam-deck/

However it’s basically a nightmare using the touchscreen for mouse. Is there a better way. I’d like to have fortnite running on the deck but wanted to check if this was the right way to do it before I download the game.

Fortnite isn't going to run on SteamOS because of the anti-cheat, and Epic has no intention to cater for Linux, and by extension SteamOS. You'll need to install Windows to do that.

Pacer keeps crashing on my deck, proton db has it listed as gold. Could it be that it doesn’t like running from the sd card maybe?

Sorry, double post.

Have you tried verifying the files? SD card shouldn't matter that much, but I do notice that downloads can not happen properly, especially if you're queuing a lot of games up because SteamOS keeps immediately downloading games instead of lining them up in order.

As has been said, Fortnite won’t work. But use the trackpad for the mouse?

That worked!
Great game btw for anyone that likes wipeout.

The deck really is a great little machine, I’ve hardly touched my PC or Xbox since I got it.

I couldn't resist classic OG Plants vs Zombies for a quid in the sale - it's one of those games I think no machine is complete unless I've got it installed.

I'm one month in now with the Deck and still just loving the thing, my hobby is almost as much curating it into a personal history of gaming highlights supplemented with a nice assortment of indie bargains and curios.

Normally when new hardware launches everybody has the similar experience with the same few launch titles for quite a while until the library opens up. With this thing you've just got instant access to thousands and thousands of titles to suit all tastes and if you are willing to fiddle a little you end up with such a personal and curated machine it's no wonder you're so attached to it.

Thanks @Gotters I’ve just done the same. Problem is I’ve then spotted other “bargains” and have ended up with Cyberpunk, Kingdom Rush (the latest one), Ghostbusters and some Pinball FX3 tables. Oops…

You're right about the curation too. On the emu side I’ve really been keeping the list short on each platform to the games I will actually play. It’s been good to reminisce but also to really work out the games I will actually want to play (as opposed to just what are considered the best games of each system).

I really didn't want to declare that the deck was the best thing since sliced bread until I had it for a couple of months. You know, stop myself from saying shit before it lost its lustre as a new thing.

It's been nearly six months now, and it really is just that fucking great.

New games? I'm playing Signalis or trying out Wormheart and Flateye before they're out proper. Old games? I'm playing Goldeneye on Xenia. Game Pass games? I can slap in an SD card with Windows on it, but most of my time this weekend was playing Persona 5 Royal, solely on cloud. Not on cloud? Play one of the other 100 games I've got on the fucking thing.

There's certainly things I don't like about it - in particular, I think the cluster of face buttons is too cramped for extended play, especially if you have to hit combinations (like rolling your thumb to hit a turbo button while holding A to accelerate). But I can live with that if it's got loads of buttons to change things around and mountains of games I can play when my hands are fatigued from one thing. Both of which are perfectly possible.

Vampire survivors is the deck’s tetris

should come bundled with it

absolute crack

So true. I’d been ignoring it because everyone just kept going on about it. Watched a video of it and thought it looked pretty meh.

Last night though, I was bored and decided that for £3 there’s really no harm in giving it a punt. Played it for 3 hours non stop. It’s just so satisfying!

An absolute bargain and perfectly suited to a handheld format.

How do i do this? I didnt want to put a dual OS on there but if i can run it solely from a removable sd card then thats a win - win!

I used this guide, and then followed

To get the controller working right. The rest of the above post is very critical about Windows on this device, mind - it's just not a very good user experience.

The guide itself doesn't actually recommend using an SD for the process as you'll likely make the card unusable in a few months, but I'm not overly fussed when I'm buying cheap 256/512gb storage anyway.

I've had my Deck for quite a while now, but it's still managing to surprise me. After playing through most of FFVIIR Episode Intermission on it, I've started the Resi VIII Shadow of Rose expansion and it runs like an absolute dream! I knocked it down to 40fps for the sake of battery life, but it didn't seem to be struggling at 60. At least during the small amount I've played.

FFVIIR itself needed a 30fps lock combined with some at times rather aggressive adaptive resolution, but the small screen countered that a bit. It played really well and still looked pretty great with those caveats.

If you'll allow me a bit of hyperbole, I genuinely think this might be my favourite games machine of all time.
