The UK 512GB model pre-order queue has reached the initial early impression in February and so slowed. Expecting continued slower progress for a week or two at least now before picking up again.

How do I bring that up for my order?

I do so enjoy all the pictures of people playing games on their Deck and having the FPS counter visible so they *know* they're getting 60FPS (or aren't) rather than just living with 30/40/50 and blissful ignorance ;)

It's the PC gaming way.

In all seriousness though it is sort of is the platform's* issue (both good and bad). There's this slippery slope of just checking you're getting good FPS. Then modding or fiddling something. And on Steam Deck next is emulation or getting other stores running.

What starts as the statement that you can use it with no fiddling and just "launch verified games from Steam" evolves into a much more involved thing.

* PC as a whole, not just Steam Deck

Wasn't there a bug that made the smaller FPS counter show up by default at one point? I'm pretty sure there was that's contributed to that phenomenon, but it's probably quashed by now.

Anyway, speaking of low FPS, I've been playing Diablo 2 Resurrected at 48fps/Hz via the refresh rate slider with ramped up visuals. It's marvellous, and I wouldn't be able to tell the difference from 60 outside of the frame drops ruining the latter - I think the only negative now is the chat text looking ropey, but as I'm playing single player I just need to nuke it altogether.

Still would be nice to shutter Battle.net and move all of Blizzard's games to Steam for actual shader caching, mind.

That's not a frame counter.

And that’s also not his point! If you’re noticing something like that you’re hardly a “play games in blissful ignorance” kinda guy.

But I do agree that constantly tracking your FPS is kind of pointless outside of an initial check. It either feels good to play or it doesn’t.

I suppose. Aspect ratios (especially on pixel games) that aren't exactly right are like a needle in the eye to me though. I couldn't tell you if my frame rate was at an "unplayable 40fps".

Just received my invite to purchase the 512GB - I'm not even sure I want/need it right now (partly as I forgot about it and wondering if I want the outlay).  Is it worth splurging?

Yes.

Also, when did you order?

If you’re not interested in one I’m sure someone else on here will happily buy it from you.

Same here, reserved on the 25th Jan. I've gone for it, not sure if I'll use it that much but my gadget curiosity means that I have to give it a try at least!

Well it's quite an outlay if you're not sure. Ask yourself how you'd feel if there was a knock at the door and you had to hand over the 600 + to have it in your hands right now. If that prospect doesn't excite you much, then probably best to hold off. You'll get a second bite of the apple later down the road.

I got my notification for my 256GB and I couldn't pay it fast enough. As mentioned earlier, it was supposed to be a Christmas gift and I'm still not sure if I'm going to keep it as such. Four months is a long ass time to keep it in the closet.... but then it would make finally getting it all the sweeter. Man alive, talk about first world problems. 😆

Well, do you have a lot of PC games or want to play a lot of PC games, and would you like to play them on something smaller than a laptop?

At the end of the day, if you cancel our give away your invite, new orders are coming in around Q4, so it's not really a big deal any more to jack it in.

I made a reservation for a 64GB in March and it came up for order yesterday, they seem to be accelerating quickly. I'd say your chance is decent, with my finger in the air guess that orders are slowing down after the initial rush.

if i preorder now, is there any chance of my turn in the queue coming up before christmas?

All three models have an expected availability of Q4. So I'd say there's a very, very good chance. The only question is if you'll get the order too late to actually receive the model at Christmas, but the chances of that ought to be slim.

So there is the kicker - if there is a ready made solution to use good old games I would happily use it for old SSI gold box stuff etc

There’s a Linux installer called Heroic for GOG and Epic, with a lovely interface, and it’s worked fine for the games I’ve tested.

I think I'm going to order it - quick question though anyone know how quickly they deliver as I go on hols for 2 weeks next Friday

Roughly exactly one week. They'll try to deliver it 10 minutes after you set off.

I think it is. If you have the money spare then it's still up to you. As said above someone would probably buy it off you pretty quickly. Values are dropping on resell value so taking it so CEX and similar will no longer net you a profit but you'll easilly be able to shift it to a mukker or similar if it's not for you.

Do you have a gaming PC and/or how much time do you spend out of the house? I didn't use mine *that* much until a recent break where it really shone. Also depends on your favoured genre, if all I played was FPS & RTS I'd have issues with the controls.

I've just bought one of these on the forum, the 64gb eMMC one.  How big an sd card do I need for this? is 256gb a decent starter.  Amazon have one with what I think are the right speeds for 21 pounds so though about getting one and I'd upgrade to something like 1tb if I decide I'm going all in on it.  At the moment I'm not sure if the steam deck or the laptop will be a better option for me.

Look at upgrading the internal storage to 256 minimum if you can. Compatdata and other essential files will easy eat that 64.

512gb card is the sweet spot for price, but 1tb if you can.

The process for changing the emmc for nvme is simple. Even I did it with sight issues
