Yeah you were right. The HDD image wasn't correct. Even though it was one of the recommended Reddit packages, the HDD image was far too small. Sorted out the correct one now. Cheers :) 

 

Edit: I spoke too soon. It seemed to save once, but now just keeps telling me the storage device was removed. I think I give up. Too much hassle to just get one game working 😕

What are people's experiences of using the Heroic Game Launcher to run Epic Store games? I'm currently using it to play Disco Elysium, which I don't think of as an especially demanding game. I burn through the battery in about 80 minutes and it makes the fan whirr up something chronic. Plus, the console gets pretty hot. Is this just the game being unoptimised, or is it because I'm running an app, running a storefront, which is in turn running the game? Do native Steam games tend not to have these issues?

Disco Elysium Steam version is fine. I've only run a couple of smaller titles via Heroic (Demon's Tilt) which are fine. Cyberpunk (GoG) is fine too. You should still be able to use the per-game profile to sort out some options on power, etc

I was Q3 (July - September) and mine turned up this week, so you should be receiving yours sooner rather than later.

The main difference with native Steam games is the shader cache, which saves a bit of overhead. It's probably worth knocking down the refresh rate to 40 for stuff like Disco Elysium either way though, which should help.

OK I got mine today (thanks Chooch!) and it’s incredible and the possibilities are already endless. But my word, I really have been spoiled by the OLED Switch :lol: That would be an obvious future upgrade I imagine.


You can’t download games in standby, is that right?

 

Also is there a one stop shop FAQ/guide for noobs?

I wonder how long it will be before we see 3rd party components for this. Since it's all about user repairability and you can buy official replacement screens from iFixit for about $60 it wouldn't surprise me if it's not long until a company has an OLED screen for it.

Yeah, a lot of the no-name shit on Amazon straight up spoof memory sizes on the card - get a 512gb, says it's a 512gb, but it's actually a 128gb. So you write more than 128gb and it starts overwriting the data you've already got from it - that sort of thing.

 

Go with Samsung or SanDisk from a reputable supplier. Although, in rare circumstances, good SD cards can simply shit the bed. It's just the nature of packing so much memory in a tiny thin bit of plastic and silicon.

Wouldn't the internal video chip also need changing?

1. Honestly don't cheap out on memory. I learned my lesson the hard way. 

 

2. You will be upgrading that 256 quicker than it takes me to write 512

You’re lucky if it’s 128GB. They’re rarely more than 4.

Woof. Never assume that scummers would take a moderate margin when they can take the maximum possible margin.

 

Honestly, I didn't even realise 4gb cards still exist at this point, but I guess something's got to be supplied with Krikzz flash cart knock-offs.

 

In other news: I haven't played much because of mobile game bullshit, but I spent half an hour blitzing through Bad End Theatre (not 100%, but not far off). I'd probably pick it up in a sale in hindsight, but it is a tidy little game.

 

Probably a question for the general PC gaming thread: is there any good riffs on Mario Golf or Everybody's Golf on Steam? 3D big boy Golf with simple-ass controls, basically. I've got Golf With Your Friends, Golf It and PGA2Kwhatever in a humble bundle, but I'm hankering smashing a ball across a field without thinking too much about it

If it's the 256 or 512, and you aren't planning on using it for emulation, then just try using it without expanding the memory for a while. 

Emulation is my main motivation to get the Steam Deck. I went for the 256gb Steam Deck
