I saw those headphones in the for sale forum and almost went for them, then remembered this thread. 😅

It’s my Birthday next month, must wait.

Well headphones aren't games, so, y'now...

Just bumping this thread to gently remind you of your feelings and that you don’t need a Switch OLED or Steam Deck to be able to make headway on, or simply enjoy, the games you already own.

Thanks for the reminder! I have no interest in the Switch OLED but the Steam Deck is interesting, even if I'm not entirely convinced..

I don't want to sound like I'm trying to justify myself, but I genuinely think getting the Steam Deck will actually help me to clear my backlog as I'll have easier access to the pile of Steam games in my library that are as yet unplayed. It's absolutely true that I don't need one, but I don't feel that buying one would be breaking the one game per month rule.

Anyway, my July game, Skyward Sword, is at home waiting for me, so if I can make it to the end of the month then I'll have survived one game in July 🙂

Or buying the Deck will make it feel like you suddenly have to play all the Steam games to justify your purchase when you could have sat at the PC instead of in bed.

This is me playing devil's advocate, only because I went through this around when I was at uni and pissed away a lot of loan on games. You're saying what I used to tell myself, enabling around the subject.

(Apologies if these posts are coming across strong, I would just like to try and lend a helping hand.)

Well I can't pre-order a bollocking Deck at the moment anyway, so it looks like I will playing them on the PC ;)

I considered doing this, and in terms of full price new releases it’s doable based on the games so far announced for the rest of the year (my want list consists of Samurai Warriors 5; Tales of Arise; Lost Judgment and Forza Horizon 5) but then I’d miss out on games on sale and smaller indie titles that I’d not come across before. So I’m out. Too hard :)

I almost convinced myself into buying a Steam Deck to go through my backlog (I mostly play games on my Switch Lite these days) but I'm still not convinced it looks comfortable with the face button placement and it's also massive, like someone split an Atari Jaguar pad with a screen type of build quality :D

bought three (from the classifieds) - I've cheated somewhat and assigned them to July/August/September.

When I do this as a self-imposed challenge I would specify “twelve games in twelve months” but not “one game per month”. :P So for instance in 2011 I bought nothing in May and then next month I got the Super SFIV AE upgrade and also (erm) Child of Eden

E: although AE might have been DLC technically, which is a murky area in this “one game per month” life…

Bang up for this. I'm currently looking at:

July: Skyward Sword HD

August: Death's Door
September: Outer Wilds Expansion

October: Battlefield 2042

November: Metroid:Dread

December: Advance Wars

Updated the above. Death's door sounds like exactly my kind of thing so is on the list for next month and Outer Wilds is an absolute day one no second thoughts. I've actually stuck to only buying one game in July! And I'm loving said game!

Checking in for the end of July!

Games bought:

Skyward Sword (Switch)

Death's Door (Xbox)

Yes, I know, I know, two games in one month. BUT, the pre-order discount on Death's Door was going to expire, as was a £5 a Xbox store credit voucher I had, and Death's Door was excellent, and I sold Skyward Sword, so I don't care. No games for August, though, but I'll probably download Psychonauts 2 from Game Pass.

Pile of shame:

Down from 83 to 76 games. I completed a few, abandoned a couple and culled a few from my pile that I've no interest in playing.

September - I'm not feeling Deathloop at all, so I might pick up either Wildermyth or Outer Wilds with the upcoming DLC, like @BitterToad.

October - Metroid Dread and Switch OLED

November - nothing planned

December - nothing planned

Horizon Forbidden West's delay until next year means I don't have to worry about that now. I'm still holding out for Silksong, though, although I'm not optimistic we'll see a 2021 release at this point.

How's everyone else done this month? :)

Well, I bought three games in July, so not the best start. On the plus side, two of them were brilliant (and both of those short, indie titles), so I don't feel too bad about it.

July purchases (in order):

Roguebook

Skyward Sword HD

The Forgotten City

This is still considerably less than I'd normally buy, so I'm taking it as some sort of win; if I'd resisted the urge to give SS a second chance I'd have no regrets at all.

Neo TWEWY arrived this week, but I haven't bought anything else this month.

So far I haven't bought one game a month, but I have averaged one game per month:

January: Doom VFR

February: The Textorcist

February: Rhythm Doctor

April: R-Type Final 2

June: My Friend Pedro

June: Graze Counter
July: Neo TWEWY

Erm, and some Destiny season stuff/DLC. Damnit.

On a more positive(?) note, Rhythm Doctor, R-Type Final 2 and Neo TWEWY were the main games I knew I'd be picking up this year. Not sure what I'm supposed to be looking forward to next - besides, Neo TWEWY might end up keeping me busy through August...

Do you keep track of your gaming spend, Jamie? Might help with helping you to control the buying.

I do, yes, but games are so cheap and I often sell then on after I'm done with them, so unfortunately it doesn't provide much discouragement from buying more.

Checking in for the end of August.

Games bought:

None!

After buying two games in July I was able to stick to my promise to myself of not buying another game in August. What's more, I didn't really feel the urge to buy anything, either, and was happy enough to play some of the games I already own (although maybe that's more to do with the time of year than anything else).

---

Pile of shame:

Down from 76 to 68 games compared with July. Again, I completed a handful, played but abandoned a couple and ended up culling one or two that I know I'll never get round to and have no real interest in. I've also sold my Switch in anticipation of getting the OLED in a couple of months, so it's been easy to avoid eShop sales.

Calendar:

September: I'm still probably going to get The Outer Wilds and the new DLC, although that's not out until the end of the month.

October: Metroid Dread + Switch OLED

November: Nothing planned

December: Nothing planned

Unless we get a shadow drop of Silksong, I can't say there's anything really for the rest of the year that I'm champing at the bit to pick up. I'm still not convinced by Deathloop, and with Forza Horizon 5 and Halo Infinite coming to GP, that will probably tide me over. Axiom Verge 2, The Great Ace Attorney Chronicles, Solar Ash and Jett: The Far Shore all look to my tastes, but I'm happy enough to wait to play them.

How's everyone else done over the summer?

I might need to start doing this. It's not the buying games, it's the finishing them and I was doing okay with that for a while. I had a new kid though and I've had to flip back to mostly handheld.

To celebrate that, I've ended up with a new 3DS and a pile of carts I've more collected in fear I won't find them in the future. Otherwise, I've done pretty good only really buying Skyward Sword and Mass Effect 1-3, and if not waiting for game pass I've bought some fun tat with MS points like PGA Tour and some 360 games.

So I'm "just proving they work" every time I get a new 3DS cart in the post, still got a few things with a pin in on Series X, Skyward Sword that I hit a bit of a wall with in the combat, and keep avoiding them by playing PGA Tour for a quick go. Swap PGA Tour for PES, and it's my old unsatisfying gaming of the past.

August: Lego Marvel 3DS    ... 1 day left, killing myself playing this so my 3 year old can have most of the characters unlocked

September: Dragon Quest 8 3DS    ... I'm going to blooming do it. 25hrs in already, I don't know where they hell I am, but it's doable.

October: Mass Effect 3     ... I guess!

November: Majora's Mask     ... Never played it! I should finish Skyward Sword, but I'm travelling and want to take 3DS.

December: Guardians of the Galaxy      ... a new bought treat if it's good, and ideally has a few quid knocked off, otherwise I'm just going to live in Forza Horizon 5

August: No games bought, but one Destiny season bought.

Also downloaded the Tetris Effect: Connected update (for free), and got a new PC mouse (courtesy of some gift vouchers).

Not sure what I’m supposed to be looking forward to in September, so it might be another cheap month…

Well I did it! 2 months, 2 games. I've not actually started Death's Door yet because I'm still plugging away at Skyward Sword. Nearing the end now then I'll probably try and get more into Psychonauts 2 before finally starting Death's Door. I think I need to find some space in the above to think about Death Stranding because I got a few hours into that then stopped playing and the PS5 version is quite tempting. Might be a case of dropping either Metroid or Advance Wars into next year.

Either way I've saved a fair amount of money doing this so thanks/well done all!

End of September:

Games Bought:

Little Nightmares 2 (PS4)

I've wanted to pick this up since the start of the year and saw it cheap, so snapped it up. Playing it at the moment and enjoying it so far. I got it before Deathloop came out, though, and the effusive reviews for that have made me regret not picking it up instead. I'll have to push it back to another month later this year. Outer Wilds and DLC, too.

Pile of shame:

68 down to 67 games. Not much progress made on this front as I'm back to work now and have spent most of the month playing Final Fantasy 7 Remake, which I've now completed. Hopefully I'll be able to get through some shorter games in October.

Calendar:

Just over a week to go until I get my OLED Switch and Metroid Dread. The aforementioned Deathloop I'm thinking will still be my November game, although December is still wide open.

-----

Well done to everyone who's managed to abstain! Having done this for a few months now, I'd definitely say it's a positive thing. I feel like I'm getting a handle on my pile while still being able to get caught up in the hype with certain things 👍
