Think that was FM7 (loot boxes), I had 6 and don't remember that, and by the time they (briefly) gave 7 away on Game Pass they were gone. Although the Forza Hub, I thought, always helped with that. I struggle in FH5 for money as you no longer get the Hub cash. Slightly surprised we didn't see the mtx model to make up for it, but they presumably learned their lesson with FM7.

Fm7 had lootboxes, but no micro transactions. The only differences between the lootboxes and the roulette wheel was:

- no “here’s what you could have won except we stacked the odds”

- no repeated prompts for you to buy additional credit

oh, and you couldn’t buy lootboxes.

I think it was FM5, now that I look it up:

The quote from the Turn 10 man there seems very similar to the quote from the Polyphony Digital head honcho earlier in the week. It feels like Sony are going through the same learning process around game economies with Gran Turismo that Microsoft went through with Forza a decade ago, but I suppose that’s what happens when you only release a GT game every ten years.

The apology was likely already priced in when they launched GT7. Neither Sony nor Polyphony are idiots, so they will have war-gamed the possible results of testing the limits of customer annoyance. The reaction will have come as little surprise, I expect, but it’s a nice data point for all involved.

Yeah, I do feel Sony is risking a lot of goodwill as it currently looks like they are pivoting their entire portfolio to live services.

Herman Hulst made some comments after they announced they were buying this new studio, which doesn't quite paint that picture, but maybe he's lying, who knows.

Quote

"Obviously we will always carry on making these single-player narrative-based games such as Ghost of Tsushima, The Last of Us, and Horizon Forbidden West," Hulst emphasises. "But you've spotted correctly that we have invested in live service games, because that's incredibly exciting for us. It allows us to build larger worlds, it allows us to create really meaningful social connections between players.

"We have quite a few now in development or conceptualisation, so yes we are setting up capabilities internally. But exactly for that reason, it is so exciting for us to welcome to the family a group of people who have a lot of experience with live-service games. To have those central capabilities that we're setting up interact with people who have been doing it for a long time... that notion that demanding customers create great capabilities, that usually holds true in game development.

"It's really exciting for our central services and technology groups. For these to be working with a world class outfit like Haven... that's great. And it is aligned with the strategy of diversifying the kinds of games we are offering to our fanbase."

Rumours floating around of something happening with Sony and Konami. Possibly a full acquisition, or maybe some of their IP, or possibly just them buying exclusive rights to their games, possibly as part of their new subscription service.

Obviously it would be great if pretty much anyone else could buy up Konami's gaming IPs, but I don't see them giving them up. I'm sure they'd be up for some long-term leeching by licensing stuff out and letting others do the work, though.

A more believable rumour is that NetEase are acquiring Quantic Dream. Doubt there's much of a bidding war going on there.

SNK Corporation, the developer of games like Metal Slug and Fatal Fury, is now nearly entirely owned by a subsidiary of the Saudi crown prince’s foundation. Electronic Gaming Development Company (EGDC), which is owned by the Mohammed bin Salman Foundation (MiSK Foundation), holds 96.18 percent of SNK’s shares, according to a February 15th filing on SNK’s website (PDF).

This follows “a strategic investment” announced in November 2020, where the MiSK Foundation acquired an “initial” 33.3 percent stake in SNK. At the time, MiSK Foundation indicated it planned to eventually take a 51 percent stake in SNK, but it seems MiSK Foundation decided to buy a much larger stake.

I'm a little confused by this. Not by the Saudi Arabian government investing in games, just the idea that they were able to buy a Japanese company. Since the start of this acquisition free for all we've had experts falling over each other to tell us that it'd be near impossible for a Japanese company to get bought out by a foreign organisation.

Its not great news though.

I think that since the Playmore takeover SNK was technically South-Korean. Might have made things "easier".

[edit] Not entirely correct, it wasn't South-Korean - it was Chinese: Leyou, purveyors of fine chicken and Warframe.

I want them to buy Metal Gear and ask Kojima to make one for them every gen and give him whatever he needs to do it. I'd love to see how he'd iterate on the foundation of Phantom Pain.

Today game developer Beamdog announced that it has entered a deal to be acquired by Aspyr Media, a subsidiary of Embracer Group.

Kojima Productions has been on a wanted poster for quite some time, but their new office and a banner update at Sony are sparking some rumors.

Salt to taste.

Bungie aside, it would line up exactly with how they’ve done their previous acquisitions.

I really hope there's some truth to this. Someone needs to rescue that ip :(

Salt to taste.

Kojima would probably be a better fit as part of Sony than Microsoft. In that case the ideal outcome is for BOTH rumours to be true - Sony buys the Konami ip AND Kojima Productions.

Silent Hills!!!

Missing the un-, there. I recently spotted Karaman at the LUMC and briefly thought about saying "Hideo Kojima!" to see if that would get his attention  But I decided to let him be, dude needs his peace of mind to work on his scam. I mean, game.

Yeah, I can't imagine Sony getting a grip on it, when its more obvious for Bamco to absorb the dev to start with.

But Sony is much more likely than Microsoft though.

I just want a new Tenchu, I don't care who has buy who to make that happen

Let me help you out there:

*clears throat*

"I'm 100% positively sure a new Tenchu will never, ever happen. It's an IP nobody cares about, that is absolutely not suited for a metaverse!"

And now we wait for the universe to be offended.
