Mergers & Acquisitions: Playstation Acquire Firewalk

The Bandcamp thing could be hugely beneficial to the platform having someone with the clout and money of Epic behind it. Also thing with the open internet thing in Badncamps statement, this seems like it's something to do with the ongoing Apple feud. To what end I have no idea.

Really? How? It's NFT's isn't it?

Bandcamp has thrived on its independence from the rest of the market and I will always look to buy digital music from there. Its very openly diverse and very favourable towards artists. I personally think it's quite damaging to their image to now be under such a large company.

Well it depends how well Bandcamp are doing themselves. Maybe they've got designs on expanding to do more and lack whatever technical infrastructure that entails. Having a company like Epic behind them makes that easier.

I doubt we'll really know why. I don't think we should start mourning just yet though.

Also glossed over a bit but since when are Epic "champions for a fair and open Internet"? Did they also buy Mozilla? (Oh god, now I jinxed it, right?)

They probably think of themselves as heroes for trying to take Apple on.

Weird. I'm heavily invested in Bandcamp as a user. So far, I have an open mind about it, but it could go south if Epic get too hands on. Bandcamp have never been a technological company, their main interface is pretty much unchanged for years now. It works fine, just feels a bit old.

I'm fine with their interface, the only thing I'd like to see from them is a better means of downloading my collection in bulk. Last time I did that I had to use a Greasemonkey script and it's going to be painful if I have to do that again.

Not a merger or an acquisition but this still feels like the best place to mention this.

Thatgamecompany has built amazing and emotional game worlds such as Sky and Journey, and today it is announcing it has raised $160 million in funding.

On the success of Sky, a mobile game that has been downloaded more than 160 million times and it has nearly seven million daily active players, the company has been able to raise a huge funding round from marquee investors TPG and Sequoia. It is also adding Pixar cofounder Ed Catmull as a principal adviser on creative culture and strategic growth.

I hadn't realised Sky had been so successful.

Atari has acquired game database MobyGames for $1.5 million

“It’s important to Atari that MobyGames retains every bit of its integrity,” the company claims

Atari has completed an acquisition of long-running video game database MobyGames for $1.5 million.

The move was first mentioned in November 2021 when Atari announced that it was investing half a million dollars into UK-based retro streaming platform Antstream.

A press release at the time stated that Atari was making a number of “strategic investments”, including an option to buy the assets of MobyGames at a price of $1.5 million, which “may be concluded by the end of March 2022”.

The deal has now been done, and Atari now has full ownership of the renowned database, which has been active since 1999.

Well, that feels wrong.

PlayStation to buy Jade Raymond's Haven Studios: Sony's first developer in Canada

The studio is working on an exclusive live service game for PS5

PlayStation has agreed to fully acquire Haven Studios, the development team led by Assassin's Creed, Star Wars and Google games veteran Jade Raymond.

It follows Sony's initial investment in the studio in March last year. Ever since, the team has been working on an exclusive new IP for PlayStation, which has now been revealed as a 'live service experience built upon a systemic and evolving world'.

Post-acquisition the studio will continue to be run by the current management team in close collaboration with PlayStation.

Yeah, I do feel Sony is risking a lot of goodwill as it currently looks like they are pivoting their entire portfolio to live services.

I’d be more worried about that if they were pivoting their current studios to service games rather than specifically buying new ones to do it.

That they ramped up the costs all by 8x for the same cars shows it did change.

The McLaren P1 GTR ’16, which was $4.99 in Gran Turismo Sport, will set you back 3,600,000 credits in Gran Turismo Sport... for a total of $40. There are other vehicles that will require you to spend $40.

The exact same thing happened with Forza 6, I think. Microsoft stuck microtransactions into the game after it had been released and all the reviews had been published, and then tearfully removed them after people kicked off. Or at least, scaled them back hugely and rebalanced the game to make it less grindy.

These things tend to self-regulate to a certain extent. Large publishers can’t resist putting them in games and trying to pry a bit more cash out of their audience, but the response is usually so negative that it never really lasts very long. There’s a pretty strong incentive for publishers to make their flagship series enjoyable to play, rather than designing them to rinse every player into submission.

Think that was FM7 (loot boxes), I had 6 and don't remember that, and by the time they (briefly) gave 7 away on Game Pass they were gone. Although the Forza Hub, I thought, always helped with that. I struggle in FH5 for money as you no longer get the Hub cash. Slightly surprised we didn't see the mtx model to make up for it, but they presumably learned their lesson with FM7.
