The biggest simulator game developers got smart and went self-published, why pay some useless publisher a cut if you can do it all yourself and keep all the profit? Both Giants and SCS are going strong with their respective games.

Until Microsoft’s 2023. Which starts in July. There’s a reasonable chance, I suspect, of it closing this calendar year.

Staggering news.  Some fuckin' cahones on Microsoft for sure.  Massive brands with Xbox perks?  Crazy times. 

 

Still, I haven't bought anything Activision (aside from Sekiro eek!) in years and years.

I think this thread has worked out quite nicely. It's caught a lot of smaller mergers and acquisitions, I've kept the title up to date to keep people up to speed on the latest topic and it's clearly not prevented major news discussion from branching into its own major thread. I've even directed people to that thread to mitigate overlap which by and large it has. I have just updated the thread title to prevent the two thread titles clashing though, I appreciate that could have been needlessly confusing.

 

I honestly don't think many, if any of the acquisitions covered in this thread would have merited or had their own thread, so this seems as reasonable a place to cover them as any and if anybody does create a dedicated thread about any particular merger or acquisition, I'll be more than happy to help funnel discussion to it.

French publisher Focus Home Interactive has acquired Metal Slug Tactics developer Leikir Studio for an undisclosed fee.

Based in Paris, Leikir Studio will become the fifth development studio under the Focus umbrella and will continue working on Metal Slug Tactics, which is slated to release this year.

Focus Home subsidiary Dotemu, purchased by the company for $45.5 million last year, will be responsible for publishing the game.

Commenting on the deal, Focus president Aurelin Loos said the move validates the company's "multi-production strategy."

The news comes less than a year after Focus raised €70 million to accelerate development and finance acquisitions.

Interestingly, Atsushi Inaba, president and CEO of Platinum has been speaking about how Platinum are open to a buyout offer. I'm not sure how this would square with their recent investment from Tencent, but I think of all the major players in the gaming space, nobody would benefit from their addition as much as Nintendo and they would IMO, do well to make their play before somebody else does!

I’d think Nintendo would be a bad fit considering how strict they usually seem to be. This sounds more like a call to Microsoft to let them do their thing for Xbox without disrupting the Japanese side of things (as with Scalebound) or possibly Sony to give them a Bungie-break. 
 

I can only see Microsoft being interested though. What with Sony eliminating Japan Studio and Platinum not having tech or IP they “need”. For Nintendo it would seemingly need to fit a specific plan like with Monolith (BotW support) and Next Level. I’m not sure Platinum would fit that spot with what they themselves propose. 
 

Who knows though. In terms of IP I’d certainly want them to join Nintendo.

Today PUBG: Battlegrounds owner, Krafton announced that it has purchased game developer 5minlab.

The South Korea-based studio's shares were acquired for an earn-out payment in the amount of $20 million. Krafton said that with the purchase it intends to expand its mobile business operations.

5minlabs was founded in 2013 and has go on to develop titles such as Smash Legends, Como in Adventure, and Brickscape.
