Keep Nintendo as far away as possible from Sega! Don't you even dare!

I think the whole somebody is interested in buying SEGA fanboy wishing that some people for whatever stupid reason continually want is kind of a non-starter. Why did they wave the white flag and leave the battlefield of the console wars over 20 year ago? Their content wasn't compelling enough to enough people to justify bleeding out on hardware and despite going multiplatform, their shit still isn't massively popular.

Now the company bearing the name is a shadow of its former self and a significant portion of it is the equivalent of the British Empire's overseas territories or dominions.

You're better off just slicing off the semi-valuable bits, rather than buying it whole.

how did you settle on this take despite decades of analysis and testimonials about sega's terrible project management, literally the only thing that's kept sega afloat all these years is that their content is compelling enough despite all the shite they do

The primary thing keeping them afloat for alot of that period was the simple fact they were rescued out of near bankruptcy by Sammy who had a profitable business to prop up the combined group. SEGA are like a smaller Embracer or Tencent, they buy up other developers and let them generally get on with whatever niche that developer generally specialises in. Their owned European developers are primarily PC exclusive strategy game makers and they've owned Atlus for a while, but they've still operated as if their parent practically didn't exist. The part of the company which people are nostalgic for is a shadow of its former self, and I'd love somebody to successfully show that isn't true.

The founder of Sammy, Hajime Satomi said this about SEGA when he acquired them back in 2003:

Quote

"Unfortunately, Sega has been in the red for nearly 10 years. It would tighten things up if the [board] members that had directing position and representative rights took responsibility [for Sega's downturn]," commented Satomi during Sammy's fiscal announcements last month. "Oguchi is still young, so he should be able to do more things with new board members."

For example, a snapshot from 2012:

Consumer toys and games arm loses ¥5.5bn, but Pachinko sales cover shortfall

Best days are behind them so what are you really buying at this point in time?

The IP, if part of the deal. I have put zero thought into this, no need for a deep dive rebuttal unless you know what AM2 has the rights to off hand.

GameSpot, Metacritic, TV Guide, GameFAQs, Giant Bomb, Cord Cutters News and Comic Vine have been bought by Fandom.

https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/digital/tv-guide-metacritic-gamespot-acquisition-fandom-1235231819/

How long do we give them before they get redesigned to become (even) less readable, more full of SEO word salad, and break all the old URLs?

They owned D&D Beyond (digital tools for playing tabletop RPGs) for a few years between it being owned by Twitch and then being bought by the company that own D&D itself.

They didn’t fuck it up, but it did basically plateau, development stagnated in that period and the key people left after a few years.

I do find some of their TV wikis invaluable E.g. on my recent Better Call Saul / Breaking Bad rewatch but they are pretty obnoxious in terms of ads and pop up videos etc.

Not strictly news which has happened yet, but more pre-news on the inevitable, which I'm sure will please anybody who cares about who owns what for whatever personal reasons they may choose to do so.

Both Saudi Arabia's government slush fund and Tencent are gearing up for controlling stakes in more foreign gaming companies. The KSA is even planning to Borg one big one entirely, place your bets:

Quote

Savvy Games Group, owned in full by the country’s Public Investment Fund, is planning to invest $37.8 billion in gaming and esports with the goal of making the country a hub for gaming.

The group is reportedly setting aside $13.3 billion to acquire “a leading game publisher to become a strategic development partner.”

The investments will also include $18.6 billion in minority stakes.

The country said that the strategy would establish 250 gaming companies in Saudi Arabia, create 39,000 jobs, and raise the sector’s GDP contribution to $13.3 billion.

The PIF, Saudi Arabia’s Sovereign Wealth fund, is no stranger to gaming investments. It holds a $2.9 billion stake in Activision Blizzard, a $1.9 billion stake in Electronic Arts, a $1.4 billion stake in Take-Two Interactive, and took a 5.01% stake in Nintendo in May, becoming its third-largest shareholder.

Tencent's pursuit of bigger stakes in its existing gaming portfolio or new targets would give the company a bigger say in such firms' businesses and also help it secure the intellectual property rights of popular games, said the four sources.

Also, with Beijing strictly restricting game approvals at home and still suspending approvals for games of foreign IPs, Tencent is forced to move towards gaining control of foreign game companies and their IPs, said the four sources.

Saudi Arabia already own SNK and 2 of the leading eSports organising companies. Getting foreign companies to set-up development branches in KSA itself is curious, seems similar to what Singapore has been attempting, though results from that seem mixed at the moment as the 2 most high profile projects to be run from there are either likely to be not successful or got outright cancelled.

They are certainly aiming for the heavens with their ambitions for the next 8 years. Tencent are already there, they just need to cement their lead.

Apex Legends recently dropped Byfron's Hyperion anti-cheat software, so it now seems that was done because of this acquisition. Don't know what's happening to Fortnite and Overwatch 2, as those are also use Hyperion.
