I am going to preface this by saying I am enjoying the new campaign including this episode but

Spoiler

The DMing here was too railroady and obviously predetermined and preagreed (I mean I could be proved wrong on thursday but I'm going to stick my neck out here :D ).

After the battle I could feel the pace drain as they drank in the tavern as if they (or Matt) were spinning time out a bit. Bertrand's character took a turn in the tavern almost moving to a speech like a buddy cop film i.e. it felt like "I'm only 1 day away from retirement"... All that stuff led me to think he was going to die.

After we get a good old Bertrand love in he then goes for a walk on his own? at night? with a killer on the loose? It felt utterly forced.

The killer magically finds him of course and bish bash bosh Bertrand is bleeding out on the cobbles.

I know it isn't scripted but that is as damned close to being scripted as I have seen* - way too obvious and took me out of it in that last hr.

I am hoping that this is just Travis having fun bringing back Bertrand before he is ready to introduce his actual C3 character and Matt went along with it. I don't need such heavy plot driving all the way through as D&D is first and foremost an improv game.

* ok yes the Jester Fjord exit from Campaign 2 was clunky but that was driven by circumstance and babies not following timetables.

As for the characters I like them all.

I do like FCG but need to see what Reigel is going to do with him. As with Nott what we see here initially is surface jokes and prods at Laura etc (FCG being a healer cleric was an obvious jibe at Laura).

Ashton seems fun but seems a little OP and I think Taliesin's love of homebrewing a character might need tweaking again

Laudna is utterly superb with loads of space to run with that and she is handling the characterisation beautifully

ORym is a bit plain/bland at the moment but I am enjoying him because he isn't as homebrewed and tweaked - he feels like a 5e character build (as does Dorian)

Dorien is a great 5e character and a good addition to the players

Imogen needs to grow but Laura Bailey knows how to do that

Fearne - This might be my fave charaxcter of Ashley's but need to see where it is going.

EDIT - after writing all this I just went and read Matt's twitter thread on the issue (oops). That makes sense I guess but alot of my points stand as it feels more forced than Matt is saying there given the stuff that happened.

Episode 3..

Spoiler

Well I think we all knew that was coming, but I'm a little surprised as to how soon it happened.. I thought he'd be around for a few more episodes.. (perhaps leaving it until the Christmas break as a big cliffhanger or something..)

..And it's honestly a shame, I was really starting to like the character a lot and he was starting to fit into the group quite well.. Travis was always hilarious as Grog and it was nice seeing him having that sort of fun banter..

The death was a little swerve - all the 'setup' in the pub (I assume Matt just told Travis at the break to have him wander off alone) I thought could have equally built to the others finding him having died in his sleep the following morning.. just as he was getting excited to be an adventurer again..

Matt's tweets that @Clipper referred to in the previous post are here for anyone who wants to check them out..

..and reading it again makes me think we might not see Travis and his new character this week at all.. It may be a couple of episodes yet.. it sounds like he might be a few eps away yet..

Was that why Robbie was brought in..? Perhaps meaning he'll be swapped out once Travis is back full time?

Anyway - I really enjoyed the episode, Matt provided the party a tense and quite dangerous battle that was quite close thanks to the party forgetting to actually take a break..  It's clear he wants this antagonist to recur, so he had a way to have him flee once the tide turned..

Predictable as it was.. Bell's end (lol) was still a dramatic moment, made all the more so framed both by Imogen's vision and the cool new lighting and particle effects provided on the new set..

Episode 7 - Behind the Curtain

After a performance goes slightly awry, the group begins investigating the strange disappearances that have all taken place in and around the Dreamscape Theater...

(New intro and Travis reveals his new/next? character!)

Also the group tells almost every single theater joke in the book, breaks the 4th wall and possibly unleashes Santa's worst nightmare..

That dark, horrid little corner of the critter fan base that tilt at windmills kicked off about the new intro stating it romanticised colonialism and was therefore very racist. Brian W Foster who is technically no longer affiliated with critical role, had much to say on the subject and let's just say...he did not hold back.

I wasn't keen on the new intro at first but it's kind of grown on me.

wtf?

So presumably literally any movie containing explorers looking into tombs and ancient cultures is also doing the same?

I am fortunately blind to it as I - do watch the vod on twitch but I never open chat , I dont go near the reddit, I dont read the youtube comments and I only follow the cast on Twitter which tends to remain drama-free mostly.

It is quite a , hmm how to put this, "passionate" community which I don't really "get". I just enjoy the D&D games :D

Can’t remember where I saw it, but there were some people having a huge moan at the lack of diversity in the cast which was pretty close to calling them racist.

Sure, the core cast are mostly white, but when you look at the guests they have, that couldn’t be further from the truth.

When a bunch of friends get together to play D&D for a home game the first thing that needs to be considered is do you have enough diversity at your table :D

The toxicity in certain dingy corners of CR is to be expected sadly especially with some of the more obsessive element within that community.

They’ve had issues since Marqhuet featured heavily haven’t they - even though Mercer has done lots of work to avoid characiture etc

Ive been reading a lot this week about ParaSocial interactions. Why any one would be a content creator I don’t know

In case anyone doesn't get the amusement about Travis' new character, Chetney..

Spoiler

..it's that he's essentially one of Santa's elves that he played in a Christmas one shot a few years ago..

The full version is here and is a very fun watch..

But it's definitely Travis' character Chutney who has the most memorable turn. Over many years of service, he's become resentful of his employer and decides to act...

Looks like there will be no new episode on the 27th Jan, but this is only because we have a 'Guest Battle Royale' one-shot instead to celebrate the release of Season One of The Legend of Vox Machina..

@Doctor SharkShark has made a new thread for the series here..

The battle royale will feature guest players who have graciously agreed to return to our table and Exandria for a grand adventure game mastered by The Legend of Vox Machina Executive Producer Sam Riegel.

Five warriors are plucked from Exandria’s timeline and forced to fight in an alternate reality TV show -- Garyon Garrington’s Plunder Games. The last contestant standing will be awarded one use of the Wish spell.

MEET THE CONTESTANTS!

Anjali Bhimani as Fy’ra Rai from Exandria Unlimited

Darin De Paul as Sprigg from Campaign 1: Vox Machina

Will Friedle as Kashaw Vesh from Campaign 1: Vox Machina

Sumalee Montano as Nila from Campaign 2: The Mighty Nein

ND Stevenson as Tova from Campaign 1: Vox Machina & Honey Heist 3

It’s sure to be quite the adventure that will certainly go according to Sam (and Garyon’s) plan…
